  1. Good work! I would have never guessed it in a million years.
  2. Dub Modal

    RIP, D'Angelo

Not his most famous video but this got me to get that first CD. Love this kind of production for R&B. He always had other contemporary artists and musicians giving him props. Hate this happened. Way too young. RIP
  3. Is it Sam Rivers on 4? If not then is it Howard Johnson on tuba?
  4. Yeah, this is a burner. She gets hyped for At Last but she's way way more than that tune.
  5. I had no idea about this Etta James album on Chess. It's excellent.
  6. I almost thought a new sludge band just dropped but there's no way Dan G is into that.
  7. Congrats to y'all. Any plans to offer the album via Bandcamp?
  8. Those un-ID'd songs bear repeated listens really well. Arthur Blythe on 4? The solos on track 3 are really enjoyable, including the Rhodes which isn't easy to pull off. This one gets better as it goes along. I struck out on Buddy, but how about Billy Higgins on drums? Whoever these guys are they are really good.
  9. On second listen through Cyrille is killing me on track 2. Sitting here thinking this would be better with no drums and that's a rare spot for me to be in. Love the rest of it though. Is that a Buddy Rich band on track 3? 4 is reminiscent of Le Rex. Drumming sets it as recent I think. Is track 6 from a recent reissue?
  10. So all three pianists playing at the same time?
  11. Every time I see Artie Shaw I think of Elaine from Seinfeld guessing Next Stop Pottersville to get Mr. Pitt the win at Thanksgiving. Elaine would have been hell on a blind fold test.
  12. So reading the blurb on CDJapan: Regarding the reissue:. *The original analog master from the MOSAIC RECORDS 10-LP BOX release in 1995 was used (due to the whereabouts of the master from the US CD production, which is almost equivalent in content, being unknown). *The mastering was done using the above analog master digitized to 192KHz/24bit and converted to DSD, realizing the world's first SACD hybridization. *The CD layer also uses the latest remastered sound sources. *Mastering engineers: Koji Suzuki and Kaoru Ishibashi (Sony Music Studio) *Includes 10 tracks that are 1 to 2 minutes longer or 9 minutes longer than the first domestic release (the first complete domestic release). *New commentary by Takao Ogawa; 16-page booklet in English, with Japanese translations of each disc's booklet. *Stereo recording So is this a new mastering then, one that uses the Mosaic master? Reads like that to me but correct me if I'm wrong there.
  13. I saw some live Chinese opera some years ago and that was wild. I had no idea what was going on. If I ever see it again I hope it's with someone or some kind of resource that explains it. Jarring, for sure. And not something I've revisited since, but something that I could see had depth. Kind of in that neighborhood, this Plugged Nickel set has always been a challenge for me to listen to. I don't seek it out either. I'm on the fence for this CD set.
  14. That's much better than I usually do. Guessing Haden was an absolute dart throw. Will be interesting to find out who the pianist is. Interesting the Gonsalves track as well. I've only listened to him a few times, mainly via Ellington. Webster was the only other one I could think of for this song, but I was far from 100% on that guess.
  15. 1. Love the intro. Theatrical. Even though I dig it, it's not even necessary. Great playing. Pianist seems to be the leader. Reminds me of Andrew Hill in one of his straight ahead moments. But also maybe Cedar Walton. The interplay with the drummer is great. This is starting to sound familiar but damn I can't think of it. They reprise the intro at the end and I'm getting Moncur vibes but it ain't him as no trombone. Solid (if short) tune. 2. Violin and cello? Abdul Wadud? Billy Bang? Maybe too "jazzy" for Bang but I don't know. I dig the urgency in the playing. No guesses on the horn. Nice song but I'm whiffing again. 3. Big band but with a Rhodes? Reminds me some of the later years Sam Rivers big bands? But he didn't typically have any keys right? And I'm not sure he ever played or led a band with a Rhodes. Loving the drummer. Love when a band is loose but also tight like this. Whoever is leader was adept for this session. Digging the bassist more and more as the tune goes on. 4. No idea but I've liked all four songs so far. No keys on this one. Super crisp rhythm section. Sax definitely has a style. Ok maybe this is Rivers? But again it's not necessarily how he played, at least in my basic understanding. 5. It's either a Mingus band or a band playing/inspired by a Mingus tune. Excellent. 6. Sounds really modern, almost in the r&b jazz sphere. Like, some unseemly producer could have made this a smooth jazz hit. Hmmm...it reminds me of that Shorter album from the 90s, High Life (which I enjoy!) I'm not sure it's Shorter, so did Hutch ever do an album like this? 7. Pianist is on fire. Like Bud but I don't think it's him. Corea? There's no way. 8. Joe Henderson comes to mind. 9. I'm stumped on this one. Great tune. There seems to be a similarity of styles throughout this bft, and I have to say I dig it. The rhythm section sort of stopping and going behind the sax is an interesting element. 10. Somewhere over the rainbow? Ben Webster? 11. I've heard this before I think, but no guesses. Love a vibes ballad. Ok if I have to guess - Bobby H. 12. Three straight ballads to close out! Nice. Love the bass in the intro. I don't know many bass/piano duos off the top of my head. Haden on bass? Great set all around. Thanks for the bft Randy!
  16. And 80 total points at that.
  17. Wild weekend so far. This Dallas/Bears game is basically being played as defense optional so could be in store for more craziness.
  18. Read the article but remain unclear as to what this means for the project. Maybe I missed something in the article?
  19. 1. Sounds like a familiar song but I'm drawing a blank. Was this recorded in the 80s? It's got a sentimentality to it. 2. Classic hard bop. Maybe from the 70s? I hear some Tolliver and Hubbard in that trumpet. Clean tone on the sax but I can't make them out. Pianist vocalizes it sounds like. I'm totally missing this one but it's a good tune. 3. I really start digging it more after the intro. Drummer is crisp. Khan Jamal on vibes? If so would it be Byard Lancaster on sax? I'm probably way off there. Regardless, excellent song. 4. A standard I recognize but can't name. OP on keys? 5. I dig the style but hate the way they were recorded. Everyone on max volume. At least it sounds that way on this Bluetooth speaker I'm using. Could be South African jazz? 6. What style is this? I want to say Gypsy but that sounds wrong. Anyway, clarinet is well played. No guesses. 7. Good tune. Probably a big time trumpet player but no guesses. 8. Heavy duty. From the 70s maybe? Love this song as well. Yeah this is definitely one I would want to pick up. 9. Disco inflected jazz. These theatrical style vocals are always difficult for me to get into. No idea who this is. 10. Better vocal style to my ears. The scatting was top notch. She could carry this solo but the music behind her is good. Biddly Diddly Doo baby. 11. Ok, blues jazz. I like the variety of styles in this bft. Sounds like it's from the 50s. Or a 50s style recorded in the early 60s. It's going to be awesome when I'm totally wrong on all that. I'm not sure who the trumpet player is but I suspect they're the leader. 12. Sound like a modern noire style. Got some funk to it. A bit of sentimentality too like the first track. Hate I can't make more guesses here! Well, looking forward to the reveal and others' thoughts on these to see if I was anywhere close. Thanks for putting it together. Glad you knew this one. Checking them out now. Patti Cathcart has an interesting bio.
