  1. I've always used the hard K instead of the 'kw' sound but how did Percy say it?
  2. Have you listened to any Pablo Held or Portico Quartet? Portico 's Monument is a good album.
  3. Looks like 3 per discogs, with Lone Hill putting out a double CD of all 3 in 2005. That's now on my radar.
  4. Lol. Funny bc it's true.
  5. It's possible. After looking it over I think this was a DJ or radio LP. Boogaloo-ish track Blind Man Blind Man is almost unplayable. Glad I got this for el cheapo. Would definitely upgrade this bc the music is worth it.
  6. Recent purchase on LP in part inspired by the recent Clark Terry thread. Great music. I like this way more than I thought I would. Only bad thing is the pressing leans heavy into snaps and crackles. Was this common with Mainstream LPs by chance? I don't have any other Mainstream records, just CDs so just wondering if this is somewhat of a known factor with their vinyl.
  7. Planning on it! Got the Desmond set along with it.
  8. Did they publish which ones they're going to reissue? Clifford Jordan's Night of the Mark VII is a great album I have on a 32 Jazz CD. Would consider an upgrade if the SQ is improved enough bc I like this record.
  9. Mine just arrived. Will be playing it all weekend
  10. Great article. Awareness of malicious design is the first step to realizing one is consuming the mental equivalent of junk food.
  11. Thanks for posting. I've only been able to listen to the first song and it was great. Plan to listen to the rest later.
  12. 1. Nice, swinging song. Reminds me of some older Gerry Mulligan but I think it's a newer recording....maybe. The drummer betrays a more classic style. Is the bari player the leader? Tenor sounds really good. 2. Ok, I just played another version of this tune the other day and Ive already forgotten the song name. Someone will guess it immediately. This is live obviously and the tenor opens very well. Good song but no guesses. Sounds like a group of players that are familiar though. 3. Not guessing this one either. I enjoy it though. The guitarist is in full control. The singer's style is reminiscent of some of the Braxton albums with vocals. I suspect this song won't be very popular here. It seems to deconstruct more and more as it goes on. 4. Trombone on fire for the opener here. Tone reminds me of Curtis Fuller a bit. 5. Ride cymbal coming through loud and clear. Drummer and pianist are really sympatico and it's nice to hear. No guesses. 6. Sounds like a banjo here. Not sure I know any jazz banjo player. 7. No ideas here either 8. Maybe Sam Jones on cello? 9. Another familiar tune. Don't know what it is about jazz but I can rarely remember song titles. Not a problem with other genres, go figure. Anyway, bluesy piano tune that I enjoy. No guesses. 10. Beautiful tenor playing. Trombone player is no slouch. Excellent tune. Dickenson and Hawkins? 11. Love the intro. Never heard this tune before. Very nice. McPartland? 12. Live and classical, and again I can't name this familiar tune. McLaughlin? 13. Piano heavy BFT. Great playing but no guesses. 14. Not sure of who this is either. Sounds like two alto saxes? Bass solo is good, and a good groove over the whole thing. 15. Piano intro again nails it. Good song! No ideas here though.
  13. Awesome man. Thanks for putting this together and for managing the entire BFT system here. Great tunes that were a fun and educational listen.
  14. Jeez. I have that CD and I missed it!
  15. Adjacent to this rec is that some metal band, somewhere, needs to incorporate the contrabass sax. Studio and live. Would be a trip to hear.
  16. Playing some Sabbath in his memory. NIB is still a great tune and Children and the Grave (among others) were a template for heavy metal in the decades to come. Saw the '99 Sabbath reunion live and it was a great show. RIP. Helluva life
  17. Good call. I knew I'd heard it somewhere else but could not think of it.
  18. I'm only just now discovering that Sonny Sharrock kind of reworked John's Children from Byard Lancaster for his album Ask the Ages. Makes sense as Sharrock played on Byard's album. Any other songs out there that use this rhythm?
  19. If you hold the obi up to your ear you can hear the ocean.
  20. Buenos Aires is the one I've heard
  21. The Dorham, Hubbard and Mingus sets from earlier this year are excellent imo
  22. Mark Stryker's write up on this release: https://www.npr.org/2018/11/09/666123401/mingus-jazz-in-detroit-catches-a-giant-at-a-moment-full-of-possibility Couldn't find where it linked earlier and I happen to be streaming this at the moment.
  23. Damn, that price on the Desmond is crazy good. And I just bought a new one from Mosaic 😵
