  1. I'd like to do one. How about June?

1 - kind of a modified latin rhythm here and I love the brass. Not sure who this is but it's a good song and really well recorded. 2 - Fantastic song, kind of a blues waltz. Excellent reeds players. Kind of reminds me of Johnny Hodges on alto but I'm sure it's not him. 3 - Really nice cover of some pop song is what it sounds like. The vibes player really lets em ring. Is it Burton? Nice trio tune here. 4 - Reggae cover of a song I've heard before (I think). Reggae covers have to be played with a drummer that knows what they're doing and this drummer's got it. I'm wondering if this is one of those Monty Alexander sessions? Tenor player is great and I love this tune. 5 - At first it sounds like Miles on trumpet, but this is a quartet date and I think his only studio quartet dates were on Blue Note and this doesn't sound like it's coming from those. So I don't know. Good tune. 6 - That spiritual jazz vein and I can't name the players. The song is good. I want to guess Pharaoh but I'm not sure it sounds like him. 7 - You dig these softly played jams don't you? Another great song. It's like these should go on the morning walk playlist. Some excellent playing here, noticing the bass especially. Steve Swallow maybe? Or Weber? 8 - I feel like there's got to be an Adderley Bros song in this group - is this it? Sounds like it could be but again, I'm probably wrong. Nice groove though. 9 - The sax here is killing it, just so good. Wow. No idea, I want to guess Ben Webster but nah, not him. Trumpet is great too. Unreal how good this is. 10 - No idea. Bells, vibes, marimba, it's all here and I have no clue. 11 - No idea yet again. Nice tune though, good melody and love the playing by the bass & drums.
  3. Unexpectedly gritty & always jamming. I enjoy his records. The guy loved what he was doing and it came through his playing.
  4. Bob James & David Sanborn's Double Vision and Earl Klugh's Soda Fountain Shuffle (actually, a lot of Klugh's 70s & 80s albums are worthwhile)
  5. Track samples from that new album are really good.
  6. Re: The Hawk Returns, it's this Savoy CD: More Images Coleman Hawkins ‎– The Hawk Returns Label: Savoy Jazz ‎– SV-0182 Recorded in Chicago, August - September 1953 See: Geerken, Hartmut & Trent, Chris (2015) - Omniverse Sun Ra: p177#16
  7. He makes that movie, and a good many others he either starred or cameoed in. Fantastic actor beyond his Bond days. RIP
  8. South Carolina just doesn't care. The buffets in Myrtle Beach were open over Memorial Day weekend and waits to get into regular restaurants were over 2 hours. Mask-wearing is rare. A friend who lives in Greenville continues to be amazed at how lax it all is. The state is fortunate to have a low population overall, but they get a ton of tourists to Myrtle & Charleston who then go back home to other states with possible exposure.
  9. Erskine bringing the funk
  10. I've actually never spent any time with any VSOP albums. No reason other than they've never popped up on my radar.
  11. I found myself wishing it was a trio of Dolphy, Williams & Davis. Hubbard & Hutch - I love 'em, esp Hutch - but their playing seemed unnecessary and upped the hoke-factor for me. I definitely wouldn't put it above some of Ra's albums.
  12. Well worn classic that's enjoyable...but the arrangements sound dated to me which I guess is understandable as this is almost 60 years old now. Almost like some of those Sun Ra sci fi tunes but without the cute kitsch.
  13. Perfect description. I dig it as well.
  14. Or just go to YT. All of these are there for free. Hell, you could almost get a whole year out of 90 day subscription trials with all the streaming services and listen there too.
  15. These days for AAA vinyl, yes, especially if you wait for a sale somewhere. And comparatively speaking, for these titles it's budget priced. While that perspective on price is warped, hopefully the records won't be.
  16. Looks like they're trying to keep those Music Matters licensed titles in print on vinyl, as well as use a mulligan on the 75th anniversary pressings. Good titles for those coming into the genre with a lot to discover.
  17. Actually they started a new thread over there in which the issues are discussed freely. This happened after the initial uproar when the tape speed/flutter issues were first mentioned. See here: Wow and flutter, etc. Tape Speed Issues - Tone Poet / Blue Note 80th anniversary vinyl LP problems I definitely agree with your observations about that forum, but I think this issue was so pronounced that they've allowed it to go on and gave it a designated safe space. Not really my concern though as I either had the titles I was interested in on other formats or I wasn't interested in the titles anyway.
  18. Search the Hoffman forums for thread titles with "Flutter" in them and you'll find the lengthy thread listing pitch instability among the TP reissues and some other recent jazz LP reissues. It's about as scandalous as you can get in the world of jazz reissues.
  19. Nice...I'm now wondering about Tony Kofi. Hmmmmmm....
  20. I think it's closer to 1/4th left - only a week to go! Looking forward to finding out who's playing that bari on track 7
  21. Figures. I'm surprised they kept the review posted for so long.
  22. Yeah, this is excellent.
  23. If the bad review on the product's web page was true, then it probably didn't help sales very much.
