    Mizell?

Bartz has been a favorite of mine since I first heard him over 30 years ago. How he ever came to make this pile of crap is beyond me. He must have needed a payday in the worst kind of way to suspend his artistic judgement so completely.
  2. Thanks. This board is the best.
  3. Anyone know who produced and engineered this fine session. I just downloaded it from emusic.com. This information is not provided at http://www.jazzdisco.org/prestige/mdsv-cat/a/#svlp-2032 Furthermore, cduniverse shows it as having been recorded at Van Gelder's, not in Los Angeles. Anyone have the info on this recording? Thanks in advance
  4. I've had mine for about two months and so far I've had no problems. I am aware that some people have had headphone jack problems but so far (knock wood) mine is trouble free.
  5. I've got to get that Andrew Hill session. The Ike Quebec materiel is really nice, although the last session is not as strong as the first two. I've got the Mosaic Box on LP. The Booker Ervin release may be the one which was released in the 1980s on lp as Happy Frame Of Mind under Horace Parlan's name. It is excellent. Great Grant Green on this one. Highly recommended.

    Cal Massey

Lady Day: A Musical Tragedy was excellent. I can hardly believe that I saw that 33 llong years ago. The orchestra included players like Jimmy Heath. Clifford Jordan played Lester Young. It was an unforgettable evening.
  7. Get Night Beat, Live at the Harlem Square, and any good collection of Soul Stirrers you can get your hands on.

    Jackie Davis

Is this available? Anybody heard this? ← I've got this one on lp. AMG gets it about right. Ella swings like mad on this one. Get it more for Ella than the group. This one is a lot of fun.
  9. You might want to check out Lester Young and Coleman Hawkins.
  10. Salultes Bessie Smith is available for download at emusic.com.
  11. 'Wheelin' and Dealin' is excellent. Some very fine Farrell on this one.
  12. Roy Haynes-Hip Ensemble with George Adams and Marvin Peterson
  13. I saw this this aftenoon from the crosstown bus on west 59th street. I thought it looked terrible. For thelife of me I can't understand why the city allowed central park to be used for this ego trip. The streets were crowded with people going to see it. Damned if I know why.
  14. For my money there is way too much concentration on mastering and remastering here. The music on this recording is terrific. If you don't own it, buy it.
  15. Shirley Scott-Soul Sister Shirley Scott-Organ Lem Winchester-Vibes George Duvivier-Bass Arthur Edgehill-Drums This was Prestige LP 7392. It is available today on CD paired with Travelin' Light PRCD-24233. This one features Kenny Burrell on Guitar but no vibes.
  16. Grant Green-Street Of Dreams Grant Green-Guitar Larry Young-Organ Bobby Hutcherson-Vibes Elvin Jones-Drums This is a tremendous recording. Walk don't run.
  17. This tune is on Keystone Bop by Freddie Hubbard. Fantasy LP 9615 recorded at Keyston Korner in 1981 Freddie Hubbard-Trumpet Joe Henderson-Tenor Saxophone Bobby Hutcherson-Vibes Billy Childs-Piano Larry Klein-Bass Steve Houghton-Drums
  18. I heard Moran and his quartet on Tuesday but not the same set as Ratliff. I can see how it might have been difficult to write about because it was not entirely successful-at least to these ears. Moran's playing didn't really stand out and some of the concepts he was dealing with (those tapes again) sometimes seemed forced. The band played very well and Sewell is an excellent guitarist. I did here the first set of the engagement and perhaps things have jelled more as the week has gone on. Ratliff's writing is pretty sloppy here but the music was sometimes less than coherent.
  19. My first Mosaic was either The Port Of Harlem Jazzmen or Tina Brooks.
  20. I caught this band last time and it's on my 'must' list for February. Don't forget the great Randy Weston next week.
  21. My wife got me the Dinah Washington Roulettes. Great singing and some of the most god awfull overblown arrangements you'll ever hear. Gotta get myself the Jazztette and the Tal Farlow.
  22. Thanks. I'll just hang on to my LP. It's a killer. Love Shirley Scott on this one.
  23. Does 'Very Saxy' contain any additional tracks beyond what what was on the LP? I've had that one for a long time and it is a favorite of mine. I'd pick up a CD if there was added material. I just picked up OJC CD ' Blues Groove' by Tiny Grimes with Coleman Hawkins. Very tasty stuff.
  24. I bought this one years ago on LP. Atrocious sound, great sounds. I haven't played it in a very long time. I'd try to hear any CD reissue before bying it.

    Son Seals dies

Truely a sad day. I recall seeing him several times here in NYC in the late 1970s and he always tore it up. One memorable date at the late lamented Village Gate had him sharing the bandstand with the great Otis Rush. Men like this will not come our way again. And we are all the worse for it.
