    US RVG Suprises

Agreed. Also Lou Donaldson's Here 'Tis.
  2. Wow, just this morning I was listening to the newly reissued Guitar Sounds of Lenny Breau (his first RCA album), and despite what might be considered some unpromising material ("Monday, Monday"," "Hard Day's Night"), it is an incredible album. Very spare settings, some electric guitar, some acoustic nylon-stringed, all terrifically inventive. Quite dazzling.
  3. In the late 80s, a company called Pair Records released a series of Commodore titles on vinyl and CD. They usually paired (hence the name?) a couple performers on one disc. The sound on these was nothing remarkable, but certainly more than adequate. The disc with the Byas tracks is on a CD called: Giants of the Tenor Sax: Ben Webster/Don Byas. This has 5 tracks of Ben Webster in a 1944 quartet with Sid Catlett, the three Byas sides, and three more cuts of a Hot Lips Page small group that includes Don Byas. Another series to try would be the Classics series from France, which probably has a disc of Byas' 1944-45 recordings.
  4. I think that might be the two Don Byas/Slam Stewart tracks from Town Hall. I think it was Teddy Wilson who'd yet to show up, so they did "Indiana" and "I Got Rhythm" as a duet. Then Wilson came in and they did "Candy."
  5. That's a great one. Though my disc has it listed for June 9, 1945.
  6. Glad to see these coming out, particularly the Ayers date. I'd emailed Jerry Roche at Mighty Quinn about West Coast Vibes a few months ago and he wrote that they might try to get some bonus tracks on there from Vi Redd's Bird Call album.
  7. There's a Marion Brown date on Venus that's very good--can't think of the title of it.
  8. I'm not sure which Russell Malone you may have in mind (if Venus has more than one of his titles) but I have his Wholly Cats from Venus, and I consider it one of his best discs. A real lively straight-ahead date, lots of drive.
  9. On December 14, 2005 Universal UCCC 9129(Cadet)24bit,New Land,Harold/The Peace Maker* 2345 Very glad to see this one coming out. An excellent date from the Land/Hutcherson quintet. The Lou Donaldson date is real good too, with Bill Hardman, John Patton, Ray Crawford, and Ben Dixon. Anyone familiar with the J.C. Heard, the Stitt, James Moody's Another Bag, or Al Grey's Night Song?
  10. So, what's the verdict? ← Very good. Swinging and a little loose. Nice to have it. I've listened to it only once but the sound (though remastered a tad loud) seems to be an improvement over what I remember of the vinyl. I don't recall what date the 20 minute bonus track is from, but it fits in with the feel of the rest of the record.
  11. Received the Adams, Land, and Hall discs late yesterday from Mighty Quinn. I'm playing the Adams disc right now and I've gotta say it sounds just great. I never tire of Adams, that large sharp guttural tone---no wonder, as Ted Panken says in the liners, Adams was known as The Knife (though I'm not sure how widely that nickname was used). MQ's done a fine job here. Next, the Land.
  12. Aren't Cookin', Relaxin', Workin', and Steamin' to be released shortly (as K2s) as a 3-disc package by Fantasy, ala the recent Bill Evans set? That might be the way to go, especially if reasonably priced.
  13. Tower has it listed for $14.24. One Up, One Down Purchases over $20 get free shipping, too.
  14. Thanks guys. Chuck, the check arrived today. What timing.
  15. Goo Gone. Does no damage to plastic. EMI releases seem to be particularly troublesome.
  16. Up for changes. Swingtets on the way, Mark. Thanks!

  23. Breau's recorded legacy does indeed look pretty raggedy. I like the RCA things, especially The Velvet Touch Of (is that what it's called?), which is the live date. I also like the recently released Hallmark Sessions, supposedly his first "professionally recorded" session, from 1961. It's mostly standards and originals, many done in a neat little trio with (surprisingly) Rick Danko and Levon Helm (later to be of The Band) comprising the rhythm section. Breau is young here but incredible. Is this one of those things unearthed by Randy Bachman?
