Yep, looks like you're right. Anyone interested in a Label M copy?
-
Well, I guess I'll be finding out soon.... Several places (CD Universe, Tower) I've checked on-line have samples of the two bonus tracks, so I'm assuming they're there (though these are all listed as releases from Water!, despite the Label M release pictured). (By the way, Len, I can make you a tape of them, if in fact they do exist.)
-
I believe it's the Label M version that has the extra tracks. That's why I'm tracking (pun) down that particular version. Thanks to kulu se mama, who has one for trade. Also thanks to jacknife for his offer.

Goodbye to the great Fiddler. I first saw him performing in the excellent film, "Last of the Blue Devils," and grabbed every opportunity since then to see him perform or find his recordings. A Kansas City marvel!
-
Well, the date was originally done for Atlantic. On CD it's appeared at least three times: the digipak European version (1998), the Label M version (2001), and a recent one from Water.

Looking for Rahsaan Roland Kirk's Here Comes the Whistleman---the one reissued by Label M a few years ago. Anyone have one to part with or have a lead on one? Will trade (see my sale list), buy, do chores, etc....
-
It'll be interesting to find out who's remastering these. At 1500 yen (approx. $13.70) these certainly are affordable imports.

I know one of our other board members normally posts announcements from Hiroshi Tanno, but this one seemed a little more unusual. All titles below have been recently reissued as RVGs (don't know if these are RVGs) and were sold for 2500 yen (these are downright cheap by comparison). They appear to be jewel-case releases too. Three or four are unavailable in the US. The following CDs are scheduled for release. As AMG alludes to: These were also released by Koch as two 2-disc sets in the late 90s. Not sure what their availability is like these days, but definitely worth the purchase. I see there's a copy of Volume 1 listed at half.com for $21.99.

Just saw "The Cooler" tonight, and highly recommend it as a well-made later-day B-movie. Throughout the film a baritone sax player is featured prominently in Mark Isham's score. I'm a real baritone fan (particularly Pepper Adams) and so scrutinized the credits at the end. The credit for the bari player is "Adam Peppers." Any idea who this musician (paying his respect in the same comic vein as Adams himself may have done) really is?

Thanks, sjarrell, glad it got there so expeditiously. Up for review. -
I'm bummed to hear about the low turn-out for this. I'd planned on going, but then with it being Easter weekend family plans took a priority, so I couldn't go. I've seen him a few other times, all strong shows. He played a terrific show years ago with a sextet in U/Mass' old Magic Triangle jazz series. Among the selections was "Rainbow Gladiator" ; he seemed genuinely bemused by the regional demand for it, which by then, I guess, was old news to him.

Up again. Thanks for the vote, Big Al. I think that Wilson disc is real nice. -
Of the recent releases in this series, I gotta recommend the Lateef too. And Soul Sisters. The Stuff Smith is really good. I took a chance on the Tony Scott and recommend it--three tracks feature some unusual instrumentation, but hell, "Ode to an Oud" is very cool. I picked up the Johnny Frigo but haven't listened to it yet.

Well, it's a long story, but here's some more things up for sale. -
I'll put it on the list.

Duke Ellington - The Centennial Edition (a disc a day)

Wow, thanks very much for the replies! A wealth of info--I knew there'd be a good list: Groove Yard in Oakland Amoeba records in the Haight Rasputin's on Powell and Ellis (Rickety elevator up to the fourth floor. I'd start there.) Streetlight Records in San Jose (don't know if I'll get there) also Streetlights, one on Market near Castro and one on 24th Street (is this a local chain?) and There's a Virgin on Stockton and Market!!! (I'll keep an eye out) I'll copy this and take it with me. I forgot about the S.F. jazz fest. I see the Ornette Coleman Quartet is playing there Saturday the 20th, the day I leave
-
I'm heading out to San Francisco tomorrow with the family for a week-long visit and was hoping to check out some cd/record shops in the area. Other than Amoeba, which I've read elsewhere on this board is phasing out its jazz section, does anyone have any recommendations?
-
Am very interested in checking this one out. Thanks for posting this. I've just lately been listening to Rule of Three, which has Sirota with Geof Bradfield on saxes and Noel Kupersmith on droms--not guys I'm familiar with, but the music is real good and fits your description: fresh, interesting, and "accessible," while maintaining a pulse.

BMG Music Club has got The Middle Years Part 1 (1936 - 38), which is a 3 CD set. bmgmusic.com

The Brookmeyer and the Bud Shank/ Bob Cooper, and the Roy Eldridge. Big credit card bills lately. Nevertheless, I'll be picking up the Atlantic New Orleans set forthwith.

Your First Mosaic Set Purchased
Hank replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
The Mulligan/Baker (on CD) and the Ammons/Lewis (on vinyl--they'd already sold out of the CD). -
Dmitry, I've got a copy of Think Well of Me, in excellent shape but for a small hole drilled in the spine. PM me if you're interested. Or try my email if PM seems dicey: alix1@comcast.net

I think this one is quite good. Five tracks feature Allen with the full trio (Flanagan, Peter Washington, and Lewis Nash) and six tracks are Allen/Flanagan duets. I remember tracking it down through Amazon/UK a year or so ago for a reasonable price.
