I think there are four or five titles he did for them in the mid 60s. Also, there's a nice Witherspoon date with Ben Webster that was released on vinyl years back in Verve's "Previously Unreleased" series of records. A good Hodges title in this series too.
-
Yes, good to see this one coming out. Now if someone could get around to reissuing the one he did for Reprise with Ben Webster called Roots...
-
These two CDs contain demos, remixes, alternates, etc. Don't know if they're scarce, but I've seen them a few times on Amazon.com ← I think the first of these is still in print, but the second is fairly scarce and well worth finding. By the way, as noted elsewhere here, Hoffman has done really nice remasterings of Miles' Prestige work, some Sonny Rollins titles from Riverside and Contemporary, a few Scott LaFaro-era Bill Evans titles, Coltrane, and others. As Hans says, there a very natural sound in his work, musical, without the harshness that can turn up in some more recent (and more aggressive) remasterings. If you stumble on any of the DCC gold titles at a reasonable price, check it out.
-
BTW: I dig your Avatar, Hank! ← Thanks! I owe it to Mental Cruelty.
-
Great stuff, and a good price!
-
This one is available on CD from Collectables on one of their bizarre 2-for-1 combinations, paired with Frances Wayne's Warm Sound Of Frances Wayne.

I've downloaded a few Verve albums from iTunes and have had no problem making a cd-r and playing it on several different cd players. I use a G-5 iMac (had no problem importing the recent UK copy-controlled version of the RVG Basra, either ).

I don't know if anyone's still looking for the Webb Rhino box at a reasonable price, but CDQuest (through GEMM) is offering it at about the release price ($80). I just got a shipment notification. CD Universe no longer has this listed. -
That comp of Bussard's is great. It's called Down in the Basement and includes cuts from across the genres: blues, string bands, jug bands, jazz, western etc. All beautifully reproduced from pristine 78s.
-
Yep, you're right. The listing wasn't too clear, and I was probably a little punchy when I scanned it .
-
Not to add to the paranoia, but the most recent soon-to-be-deleted sheet I received from Mosaic lists a number of OJC CDs, including some fairly recent reissues. This is notable, I guess, since those OJCs NEVER seem to go out of print.
-
Arrived this afternoon (#78). I put on disc 5 first. "Everyday I Have the Blues" sounds like a big improvement over the old Verve disc. Can't wait to dig further into the stuff I haven't heard before.
-
I don't know if this interests anyone. This is currently listed at 96.74, and what's more, you can use a 15% off discount on it through 4/21. With free shipping, that's around $82. Here's the link: Krupa/James Mosaic And no, I don't know the seller B-)...

Thanks, Paul. Mental Cruelty is some excellent stuff! I'm listening to it right now. I think I like almost anything that Barney Wilen appears on. Now, who's got the "Verve" avatar that Mike alludes to?
-
Don't tell me. Looks like I'll be up all night...
-
Mike, what led you to find this?
-
Wow, I can't believe this. I found the extra hidden nine minutes. A pain in the ass but I'm glad it's there. Hit play on the first track then rewind. I just imported this into my Mac the other day. Tried it again now but unfortunately I can't access the hidden tracks on my computer. I might have to go searching through the rest of my Verve Elites for more hidden stuff. Is Jimmy Hoffa in there?

Just to echo Jazzbo: everything I've downloaded (3 of the Verve albums) have all sounded quite good.
-
Well, I don't really know. These downloads are available through iTunes--don't know if that means it's MP3 or what.
-
Verve has a bunch of new OOP jazz up for download at its website. Among the titles, are two I couldn't resist: Buddy DeFranco's ARTIE SHAW, and Lee Konitz' YOU AND LEE. I haven't listened to the Konitz yet, but the DeFranco, as expected, is really good. One odd thing about the DeFranco, though, is the appearance here and there of a tack piano. I guess it's there as a nod to the harpsichord heard in Shaw's Gramercy Five recordings but it gives the album a slightly unsettling barrelhouse vibe. Still, a real worthwhile set.

Anyone familiar with the Lou Blackburn title?
-
I definitely like the idea of a Lucky Thompson/Milt Jackson collection of the Savoy/Atlantic sides. I'd also love to see Julius Hemphill's Dogon A.D. finally released on CD.
