Nice story, Patrick. I'd like to add Yardbird Suite to the list of recommendations; some fine blowing by Frank on Bird or Bird-associated tunes, plus a lot of really fine Mulgrew Miller on that one.

Folks, as Pryan says, just send me a PM and all shall be revealed.

Beanie Babies had an absolutely brilliant marketing plan, by making every one of them "limited" and retiring them. A huge difference between Beanie Babies and Cabbage Patch. Several years ago, Beanie Babies, if I recall correctly, tried to jumpstart their sales by announcing the imminent retirement of the whole line, but then they reneged and hurt themselves because it annoyed their hard core customers. BTW, I do NOT have a collection! I know about this stuff because at the height of the Beanie Baby craze, my Mom brought Beanie Babies into the Gift Shop at the Historical Society where she is the Director. That gives you a good idea of how popular they were-what are Beanie Babies doing in the gift shop of a small New England Museum? They've got beautiful arts, crafts and books for sale, plus an overflowing barrel of Beanie Babies! But the time has passed-the price is down to a buck and everytime I'm there, it doesn't seem like they've sold one in the past year.

Charlie's Angels 2: Full Throttle
Dan Gould replied to vibes's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Well they are resorting to a whole lot more T&A so that should tell you how hollow the plot and story is going to be. Excuse me, but isn't this the reason to see a Charlie's Angels movie to begin with? Me and a friend saw the first one in the theater and had a fine time. My mother and sister-in-law walked out in the middle they were so annoyed. I tried to explain to them that the whole point is that its going to be stupid and goofy and cheesy and filled with T 'n A. This thread notwithstanding, me and that very same friend will be heading to the theater next Saturday, disengage our brain and (hopefully) be entertained. -
You know the drill, send PMs as early as possible if you wish to participate. The poll will end Sunday night at 6 pm Eastern time and a winner will be announced forthwith.

I'm with Lon-the Stitt Mosaic is excellent, but it'll also do ya for Stitt for a while. I found a Japanese LP of New York Jazz a few years ago at Princeton Record Exchange, this reissue and the glowing reviews has me anxious to dig it out soon.

Nominations for future "albums of the week"
Dan Gould replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Album Of The Week
OK, Catesta has nominated me for the week of July 6th-12th. However, I will need time to get my ducks in a row, as it were, and so I hereby nominate Lon to pick the AOTW for the week of July 6th-12th; my pick will be for July 13th-19th; and Lon will pick someone to choose for the week of July 20th-26th. -
Since it seems to be traditional to have a preliminary poll and a final poll, I decided to open the first one to chosing the category. Without full disclosure, singers include Jon Hendricks, Joe Williams and Babs Gonzales. Organists may include Groove Holmes and Charlie Earland. This preliminary poll will be up until Friday night at 6 pm Eastern time. The "official" poll will then go up and will run through Sunday at 6 pm. Same deal as before, folks, please send PMs if you wish to help/participate and please do so as soon as possible. Thanks! By the way, as before, this AOTW will be for the week of July 13th-19th. Lonson will make the pick for July 6th-12th, and he will nominate someone for July 20th-26th.

Nominations for future "albums of the week"
Dan Gould replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Album Of The Week
No, but if you (re)nominate me for the following week, I can arrange another poll if you wish! -
I'll see how the reviews treat it, but I hope its not as cheesy as this similarly themed Chuck Heston flick:

Landed a true rarity on ebay yesterday: Charlie Earland Trio, Boss Organ, on the Choice label. He also recorded Soul Crib with George Coleman on that label, and those tunes came out on two Muse LPs in the early 70s. But I believe that five of the seven tunes on Boss Organ didn't make it to the Muses. Edit: Since the picture is so big it necesitates the side-to-side scroll, I'll just leave this up for a few hours and then delete.

How exactly did they 'bilk" him? I've used it for several years and while the horror stories give me pause, I have no reason (other than the situation described above) to complain.

Funny timing, I picked up From A to Z about a week ago, and it is next in the stack at home, hopefully to be heard this afternoon.

For what its worth, paypal members who accept credit cards have to agree to be "preferred merchants" or something like that, i.e., to allow Paypal to get a chunk of the credit card charge. I got suckered into doing this when I sold something on ebay, said I would accept paypal in order to simplify payment and then discovered that I'd have to "upgrade" or else tell the guy I couldn't accept his credit card. I felt that since I hadn't told him I wouldn't accept credit card payments, that I ought to bite the bullet and let paypal get their pound of flesh. What sucks now is, paypal gets a small percentage of all payments that come my way, whether its credit or bank transfer. Guess I'm lucky that I use it more for payments than for receiving.

First of all, I believe Klitschko had three or four inches on Lewis, something like 6'9" to 6'5". *Not* one inch as Mny said. Secondly, is it just me or does anyone else see a major disconnect between Mny's endless insistence that the doctor had no business stopping the fight with a cut like that, and yet the cut is bad enough that he needs up to a year to heal before he can even spar again?

Then I'm guessing that you would really hate Tardo Hammer's cover of "Take Me Out To The Ball Game" in which he slips "Two Bass Hit" into the theme. Personally, first time I heard that, I laughed out loud.

Just received an ebay win that turned out to be very pleasing, A Night at Count Basie's-The Funky Jazz of the Perri Lee Trio. I had no idea who this woman was but with Eddie Chamblee's jazz/R&B tenor I figured what the heck. Turns out that she was originally discovered by Dinah Washington and sang several tunes with Doris Day in "Pillow Talk". She's also on "Sonny Stitt and the Top Brass" As for her organ, she kind of comes out of the Wild Bill Davis "orchestral" style. Good tunes all the way through, with the highlight being a lengthy take on "Doodlin'" Anyone want to trade a copy of this for LD's Scorpion?

Isn't that Teddy Edwards MetroJazz a live date with Joe Castro where one side was Sonny Rollins? I think the Teddy side got orphaned because the Rollins has been reissued, I'm told. I saw this up on ebay not too long ago though I let it pass by.

Excuse me, but I never said Mny is or will be a child abuser. I said this: which somehow became "Mny and anyone who agrees with him is a child abuser." No one can tell me that people who rant and rave on sidelines are all failures who live through their kids. I'd say a good chunk of them have the exact same driven, hyper-competitive personalities that Mny openly admits to. Does this mean that Mny will do it? I have no idea. But I don't see what makes it an off-the-wall supposition. And I don't see where I accused him of child abuse.

Thanks for posting this, B3-er.

What would I possibly have to be jealous or insecure about? Your 1600 on the SAT? Your medical license? Those aren't my yardsticks, pal. ****************** Calling everything "life and death" is a healthy attitude for you or your kids? Making sure the other team "knows" it was beaten, "physically and mentally" is a healthy attitude to have or instill? Does anyone else find it funny how Dan seems to avoid everyone else that has agreed with me but has fixated on me as if no one else agreed with me in this thread? No mention of the 3-4 others who have agreed with me as being future child abusers. Only I am "privileged" to receive his personal attacks. What a classic case he is. By the way, no where did I say everything is life and death. First of all, it ought to be pretty damn obvious when I separate a comment directed at you with a line of *************** and then respond specifically to the statements of J Larsen and Jim Dye (no, I didn't actually name them) that I am not directing everything at you. Again, I think that's your bountiful ego speaking. Everything is about you. ********************************** As for your denial of your own words: You are contemptible. You know damn well what you wrote and what I quoted. Just because you have gone back and edited your posts doesn't mean you didn't say what you said. You're pathetic. Once again, here are your precise words: If that does not equate to "everything is life and death" what does it mean? And if you are saying that I imagined this quote than I must be pretty damn good to be smart enough to repeat your ever-present error of mistaking the contraction of "you are" with "your". And speaking of ongoing mistakes, for being in this country so long, you might have figured out by now that the past tense of the verb to be is "were"; "where" is a location.

Looks like there's that Mny ego again, only its anything but mini. I started pulling quotes from Mny's posts here, I didn't even get back to his "piledriving" his brother when the score was 98-0. But let's consider these: You say you won't be ranting and raving on the sidelines, you don't even care if your kids want to play sports. Fine. But I don't believe it for a second if your kids show no drive, no interest in succeeding that you will smile and pat them on the back. The quotes above hardly reflect a personality that will take a "C" report card or being on the wrong end of a 20-0 blowout with a "well, as long as you tried, that's all that matters, son."

Finally! An A&E "Live by Request" worth watching
Dan Gould replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I just don't think its necessary for his "disciples" to be brought on ... I think its the way they try to make a black man more "presentable" to white bread America. If you insist on having "special guests," fine, but it ought not to be necessary to promote that fact. Which brings us to my "dis" of Elton John and Billy Joel. Anyone who has seen these A&E shows knows that they have been a huge success catering to white bread, top-40, pop music loving baby boom America. B.B. King fits in how? -
Finally! An A&E "Live by Request" worth watching
Dan Gould replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Did anyone happen to catch this? In an amazing bit of bad timing, we've had horrific storms in south Florida and the cable has gone on and off for the last three days. Of course, it was on at 8 pm but by 9 it was off again. The only thing that kept me from tossing the TV set through the window was the knowledge that a friend had already programmed his TiVo so that he could burn a CD for me. Now I'll have to ask him to burn a videotape, too. BTW, I saw a print ad for this which mentioned a special guest, Jeff Beck. All I can say is, I hope he didn't ruin it. There's no reason whatsoever to bring anyone else on but BB and his band. BB don't need no "special guests".
