It gets even more confusing. All but one of the titles listed on The Soul of Jazz Percussion are on a Collectables album titled The Third World. Incidentally, I have Ed Shaughnessy's score for "Wee Tina."

Thanks, Jim. I'm very grateful for the discographical data on the Mosaic Basie Studio Recordings.
-
Does anyone have data on the Mosaic Count Basie Studio Recordings? I'm particularly interested in identifying the arrangers.

If you haven't heard his fatther's (Gerald Wilson's) latest big band album, you should. I refer to New York: New Sound (2003). Anthony solos frequently and really makes the band perk.

Bary01 - I very much appreciate the valuable information that you added, especially since I see that you had to type this information from the Mosaic insert. I was expecting only a link, but I suppose that Mosaic may have removed it at the point when the collection sold out. Merci beaucoup. DIS/Douglas

This information is direct from Mosaic, is it not? Do you have the actual link? Mosaic should also give additional information. I'd like to find out who arranged these selections. I know that Thad did most of them, but I think that some were arranged by Bob Brookmeyer and perhaps others. I'd also like to know the album titles on which the selections originally appeared.

An 11-tone chord? That must have been "Grandpa's Spells." Oops, my mind's slipping of late. That tune was from the '20s.

Yeah, Willis! I loved Holman's In a Jazz Orbit album when it appered in 1958, and I'm still listening to it. In fact, I have most of the charts from the album. To name just one other, Gerald Wilson has to be one of the most neglected. And whereas dozens of Holman's charts can be found, I've found only four by Wilson.
-
Thanks for the information. It checks out. I have the chart and wanted to know who arranged it. If you go to Google and enter "Buddy Rich" and "West Side Story," you get almost 5000 hits!
-
Does anybody know who arranged this piece for Buddy's band? I suspect that the DVD either doesn't say or credits Leonard Bernstein, who seems an unlikely arranger for Buddy's band.

I'm not sure that the above remarks answer your question. The Dm#7 will sound "odd as hell" when removed from context, but it is correct. Think of it as a passing chord. It's part of a formula for extending the Dm chord over several bars--first the pure Dm triad chord, then the Dm with a C#, then with a C (Dm7), then with a B (Dm6, which might precede G7). The half-step downward movement of D to C# to C natural to B makes for a nice effect.

I've been looking for Manny Albam big band chart but have found only two or three. Anybody know of a source?
-
I don't know the personnel, but from the viewing the equipment and the setup, I'd guess that those pictured are part of a larger band from the 40's that featured the alto player, who might also have been the leader.

By any chance are you hoping to collect the music (solo transcriptions, jazz charts for combos and big bands) that Down Beat published during this era? I didn't save the magazines, but I did save most of the music from them.

I don't have this recording, whatever it is. I have the arrangement and would like to know who sang it when recorded. I'm getting conflicting information. Here's what came my way via e-mail: That would be Bobby Darin, on his very first Capitol Lp, "Oh! Look At Me Now." It's one of my all-time favorites, and a great band led by Billy May backing up Darin. May also wrote all of the arrangements as well. Can anyone verify one or the other of these responses?
-
Can someone please help me identify who sings on the Billy May arrangement of "Always"? This arrangement might be on the recording, All of Me. If you have the recording, please check. Otherwise, please don't guess!

Nevermind. Found 'im. I'm surprised that nobody recognized this name. He's still extremely active. Nice web site at www.hoboemusic.com

Free For All - There's an interesting discussion about the Kenton music camps and the influence that Stan Kenton had on music education at the site below: http://forum.trombone.org/viewforum.php?f=7

The Wilson Mosaic material is drawn from 10 Pacific Jazz and World Pacific albums. No previously unreleased tracks.

Does anyone know how to get in touch with Charles (Chuck) Sayre, composer-arranger of "Music in the Air"?

I seem to recall that RCA Spain offered quite a few Shorty Rogers CDs, but I can't seem to find their website. Can anyone help?

Exactly what I was looking for. Many thanks.

Can anyone send me Inkpen, the music font used by Sibelius and possibly Finale? I sometimes need to make repairs to arrangements of unknown origin, and I like to be able to match the type used on the original. It was included among my original Windows 98 print fonts as “Inkpen Script,” but when my computer crashed I lost it. (I'm talking about the 26 alphabetic letters, not notes, Coda signs, etc.) In return, I’d be happy to send you an arrangement from my library of about 500 items--anything from a JJ and Kai duet to a big-band chart.
