Mulligan, Patton, Chambers
Free For All replied to Free For All's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Uh.....so, Moose, you're saying the guy who gave it one star has a point by saying the 5 star guy should hold off until the set is released? I haven't heard the Mosaic set yet, but I've heard most of what's going to be on it and based on that alone feel confident in giving it a high rating RIGHT NOW! I guess that's more of a recommendation than a review- I guess they could totally screw up the sound, but I doubt that'll happen. The other guy's one star rating seems to be directed more towards the 5 star guy than the music itself. He is rating the other review, which doesn't help matters much either. None of this is worth getting excited about (since your original comment was offered with green smilie which indicates "humorous intent"), I just feel compelled to respond to any post that begins with "Uh........" ! -

I find it hard to find fault with this music on any level. It's long been some of my favorite large ensemble music. The arrangements are great, not dated at all to my ears. The live version of "All About Rosie" is outstanding, some really advanced contrapuntal writing. There are some insprired solos- the exchange between Clark and Gerry on "Blueport" where they get into a quote-fest is one of my favorite moments. And how can it not swing with Mel Lewis at the helm? It's smart and it's fun. I'll be very surprised if anyone who hasn't heard this yet is disappointed. -
I preordered from CDUniverse so they probably won't arrive 'til after the 7th. Your plan sounds like it might be a good one. I'll call you!

October's gonna be off to a great start- Mulligan and the new Conns! That last smilie is for all the bread I'm dropping for these and the Miles.

"The Thing With Two Heads"- wasn't that the original title for "Double Clutching" from Coltrane Time? -
Hi, uks, and welcome to the board. Regarding your last point, I would be one to say that the group of four sixteenths would be played straight (in almost any situation). As the tempo increases, there comes a point when it becomes detrimental to the swing feel to try to swing individual notes. If you listen to any bop-based players (like Bird, Clifford, Stitt, Rollins, etc.) you'll notice that on bright tempos the eighths are pretty much straight- the swing effect comes from accenting/ghosting specific notes( like high/low notes, isolated notes, etc.). Trying to swing each note in a line would result in a extremely "bouncy" feel that is inappropriate to modern (from bop on) style. Regarding your initial question, I've seen a LOT of lead sheets and scores with the combination of notation you're referring to. I think that writing swing rhythms as dotted eigth/sixteenth or even sudivided triplets conveys a stylistically wrong concept. Just go to a high school jazz festival sometime and you'll hear LITERAL interpretation of this by directors who don't know any better. But that's a whole 'nuther thread.................. In my opinion, the modern swing style usually consists of combination of straight (or almost-straight) eighths, swung eighths and stategic accents. The only time each eighth is swung would be on tunes at specific tempos (like Lil' Darlin' or Girl Talk or something like that) and that is usually a case of playing the eighths legato and adding a slight accent on the upbeats. I'll be curious to see what others might have to say about this..........................

One of the baddest of the bad. The way Ray Milland stands behind Rosie. And the socially-conscious dialogue! Worse than Plan 9, IMHO. Just outstanding in its lame-osity. Almost worth owning for parties, like the Shatner CD. -
I don't think I saw those in the example book I was looking at. Imagine- you're at the gym showering and someone says "Wow, is that a Charles Rennie Macintosh, or are you just glad to see me?". How about a permanent Rooster tie?

Yeah, she's not the type you'd expect to do something like that. In college while I was jamming and skipping classes, she was in the library studying. Thank goodness one of us took the book-learnin' seriously. She has such a straight-ahead personality in every way, I think this was her way of being a little wild. I'm all for wild.

I was in a tattoo shop once looking through the book of examples. Man-oh-man you wouldn't believe where some people get tattoos! And pretty elaborate ones! OUCH!! Piercings, too- I don't know how some of these cats are able to comfortably go to sleep at night with all the hardware.

My wife has two tattoos, one on the ankle and one on the small of her back- flower/butterfly kind of stuff. She's gotten one a year for the last two years. I figure in about 10 years she'll be a biker chick. Me, I have none- you can't make me get near needles of any kind! jacman, yours sound pretty interesting..............

Can you get in the "zone" to see those? I know some people have a hard time. There is something there, though- I thought it looked suspicious, so I did the "thing" and it worked. -

One more brief tangent- anyone ever notice that the McLaughlin recording "The Promise" has one of those "magic eye" optical illusions on the front cover? -

Sorry if anyone's offended. Ladies, please excuse our crude humor. Of course, if you've read this far........? I saw English Patient more than once. I go shoe shopping with my wife and enjoy it. BTW, her sense of humor is often as sick as mine. Also probably going to go see that "House in Tuscany" movie when it comes out. -

Since this is a music board, maybe we should keep this topical. How about "Blue Note tunes that might have been composed on the commode"? Sounds like a Rooster thread to me. "The Procrastinator" "Stopstart" "The Rumproller" "The Sidewinder" "Totem Pole" "Ill Wind" "Hammerhead" "The Midget" "Down Under" -

With apologies to Mark...... "hanging a moose" Looks like you've created a monster, conn500! (so to speak) -
I got the chance to meet and hear him live when I lived in Austin. He was, of course, on crutches at that point but he was still playing his ass off. He got a sound like no other. I've always liked his Prestige/OJC sides (from around 1960). "When My Dreamboat Comes Home" on Party Time is pure pleasure. The companion More Party Time is also great. Also, Blows For 1300 is a good choice.

Since we seem to be getting in deep here, how about some metaphors for the act? "Dropping the kids off at the pool" "Launching a sea pickle" OK. I've officially hit bottom. -

I just noticed on the Mosaic site that they're now saying the Mulligan will be available in "early October". The Patton and Chambers are still scheduled for "late September".
