  3. Last evening, Mokoomba at District 121 in McKinney. Great band, with a wonderful lead guitarist (Trustworth Samende) and a vocalist with an amazing vocal instrument and who sings in a mere six languages (Mathias Muzaza). Unfortunately, an outdoor concert (it's hot in Texas at the end of June), but a rare opportunity to hear this group all the way from Zimbabwe up close.

    Billy Harper

Sound advice. Doing a mental tally, I've seen him with his band three times, with the Cookers twice, with Malachi Thompson twice, with Randy Weston once, and with Charles Tolliver once. All were a pleasure.

I don't recall his last name; perhaps I misunderstood and he just knows of you through the board.

By chance, I was assigned a seat with a nice fellow named Jimmy who asked about you.

    Billy Harper

At yesterday's Q&A section of the Billy Harper concert in Austin, he was asked about his main early influences. He mentioned playing with Don Wilkerson in Houston, but more prominently, he credited being in the James Clay Band in Dallas.
  24. Saturday night, the Billy Harper Quintet at Steve's Wine Bar in Denton. Francesca Tanksley on piano, Freddie Hendrix on trumpet, Dezron Douglas on bass, and Aaron Scott on drums. A somewhat distracting place with subpar sound. Sunday night: Billy Harper Quintet at the Stateside Theater in Austin. Much better sound, and a nice venue. Great concert. They played in the first set: Priestess, Love on the Sudan (fantastic), and Soran-Bushi, B.H. There followed a question and answer session with Billy Harper and his group. Concluding with a short second set: Thoughts and Slow Actions (mostly an utterly gorgeous tenor and piano duet) and Insights. Glad I took the trouble to go to Austin, as the Sunday venue was vastly superior.
