Bob Feldman -----Triplicity-------(One note) I don't know anything about the leader. As I recall this disc was recommended in these parts on his passing. This is a fine set.

I dug out my copy of BMM and gave it a spin. I have to say I really like it...perhaps its just me

Sonny Rollins-----Live in London Vol. 1----------(Harkit) 2006 (unauthorised??) issue of January 1965 date at Ronnie Scott's. The sound is better than I remembered . Sound is well balanced but high end sounds a bit blunted ( noise reduction ?) It and Vol 2 are very listenable , Newk is in fine form aided and abetted by Stan Tracey (p) Rick Laird (b) and Ronnie Stephenson (d)

listening now. If it's a needle drop then it isn't obvious to me. I haven't heard the original LPs but these transfers sound more than good enough

His two JVC releases from 1995 and 1997 are sublime _ A view from the side and Brilliant Corners. The Monk album is well worth a listen.

This is great news but probably not for me. I have all the sessions on disc and /or LP. The alternates and one unreleased track would be nice but not worth the outlay. It's given me an excuse to end my Rollins binge and dig out my Bobby H collection and do some deep listening. Marvellous music.

Sonny Rollins - Freedom Weaver: The 1959 European Tour Recordings
Clunky replied to colinmce's topic in New Releases
I think the sound on the RSD set is slightly better compared to the Dragon LP. Frankfurt sounds well balanced but as rough as boots I've heard. The Swiss date is the same as the TCB CD. The Aix set is new to me and sounds excellent and it's worth it for that alone. Is Zev the new Orrin Keepnews..? -
You are not kidding. It really is , Sofia’s voice is made from angels’ tears and Alex and his piano(s?) meld just beautifully. I’d buy a second volume in a heartbeat.

Good to hear. I had faultless and very friendly service from Rough Trade.

Sonny Rollins: A Night at the Village Vanguard (Tone Poet -- 3 LPs)
Clunky replied to Mark Stryker's topic in Re-issues
I don't quite understand the sequencing choices in the new one. In the extensive documentation it would have been nice to summarise the order of recording and what titles were on the previous issues. Not a biggie but it would have been nice. -
Lateef? Mine looks ok but you can see drag scuff marks. I'm never too bothered if the sound is good. Audiophile prices demand audiophile pressings....I'm still on the fence about the Rollins set. I think I'll stick to my CD order. The above issues don't persuade me that Elemental have QC sorted.

Too right. What's amazing is the consistency of his work and quality too. I've always assumed that they were generally taken during rehearsals rather than during takes. I dimly recall reading about his set up which IIRC used flash off camera (Rolleiflex?) which would have been a tad bulky.

I got a replacement Lacy/Waldon set as my initial copy had a large arc shaped scratch on the B side( causing light clicks) . The replacement has a similar shaped mark although it doesn't affect the sound. Anyone else seen this issue with the Lacy/Waldron Mighty Warriors LP set. The sound quality incidentally is excellent and the performance as good as you might hope.

this should be good. Deciding between getting the CD or the LP...

Sonny Rollins - Freedom Weaver: The 1959 European Tour Recordings
Clunky replied to colinmce's topic in New Releases
I was told by my local retailer that the Rollins LP version was delayed three weeks.. perhaps there were some copies available on RSD2024. -

I’ve listened to the streams of this on Amazon in advance of the CD ( sorry still occasionally buy off Amazon) . Sound quality is in line with previous versions as far as I can tell. The Frankfurt session is nicely balanced but sounds as if it was transferred from a trashed LP with some degradation of the sound. Aix-en-Provence is really good but was new to me. Despite being a lover of LPs I’m not sure the extra cost of the LP set can be justified given the sonic limitations of the source tapes. -
Sonny Rollins: A Night at the Village Vanguard (Tone Poet -- 3 LPs)
Clunky replied to Mark Stryker's topic in Re-issues
The sound is so good on the LP edition ( presumably CD too) because they used the tapes from the Vanguard rather than dubs created by Ruby immediately after the recording. Apparently the original 7.5ips tapes haven’t been used since then. The difference is startling to my ears -
Received the tone poet edition of the Rollins Vanguard material. The sound is noticeably better than previous versions with a real immediacy.

Thanks for this tip. My copy just arrived. What a group. Pat Thomas is a master..but then the whole thing swings and heaves. It's like being hit by a heavy object and yet enjoying the experience. looking forward to hearing this in due course.

Very sad news. What a legacy

The Tony Fruscella Atlantic is one of my absolute favourites. Nick Travis' "The Panic is on" is another that shares a similar status for me. For some reason I think of these two as a pair , even though there isn't too much in common other than era.

Making my way through the J section of my LPs - I came across three Leroy Jenkins sessions that I'd not played in years. All on Black Saint - Mixed, Lifelong Ambitions, Urban Blues. All very different. Currently spinning the duet with Muhal Richard Abrams. It's pretty raw and bleak sounding with both musician pretty exposed. Well worth hearing again.

Nice one, must dig my copy out , it's been a while

I was in a similar position at Lon. A mix of issues and formats. The Joe Henderson and Hank 60s material is particularly close to my heart so I bought the respective Mosaics. I didn't do the same for the Hubbard set because I felt some of the sessions were a little weak to my mind..
