  1. AMG seems to rate the recording quality very poorly, perhaps what why it's not been out yet on CD
  2. Great thread- spurred on by the above I finally took the plunge got PayPal and ordered TRIO and Eddie Costa's "House of Blue Lights" from Early Records. Wow and double wow. Amazing service , speed and simply incredible music on these two discs.
  3. the pepper Galaxy set does include some AH releases , New York Album, Artworks and So In Love. The writing on my bargain set from Zweitausendiens is so small that there be others but it hurts my eyes checking
  4. That's good news. "Dig it" is excellent . I think Ted Brown was also on a few tracks on the RCA france issued "Sounds of Suprise"- released at much the same time as "Dig It". Both great, great Konitz.
  5. All of the 58 studio and most of th Jazz plaza session were on a US Sony Legacy CD from the early nineties called I think "Stella by starlight - 58 sessions" or something like that. Not sure if this is still available The studio sessions are amongst my favourite miles sessions which is saying something!!!
  6. Hep's "Band Box Shuffle" by Bennie Moten (2CD ) is in excellent sound. They also do some good new recordings by people such as Herb Geller and Jessica Williams
  7. This was one of the first Ellington's I heard and as per all the above it is beyond reproach. His various suites and extended works of his latter years are just a marvel. He really kept up to date his music timeless. Whilst the Blanton Webster band was indeed very special stuff like this and "Such Sweet thunder" and "Latin American Suite" get loads more play time.
  8. Cant wait for the Iyer - it should have a cracking version of "Hey Joe", which was a killer heard live. Iyer is a pianist to watch, very impressive. Fans of Andrew Hill take note.
  9. I have "Babes Blues" and "Black Orchid" CDs- that's one CD too many. What I hear swings well but is pretty shallow. I guess every label had this kind of pop jazz group. Harold Harris on Veejay must be the worst of this sort of cocktail-hard bop jazz piano school judging by the lamentable "Here' Harold"
  10. The Bebop CD isnt bad by any means, some of the later transfers are from pretty dodgy originals but quite listenable. I dont recall too many other details but I wasnt disappointed with this one All the LT's in this series are excellent, if you had to chose one I would go for the All stars date with Dave P.
  11. Hey I'm Dr Strange... is that good or bad .... sounds like a bad un...
  12. I am not sure if the Napoleonic code had much to do with his decline, certainly his 40s and early 50s material is much to be prefered. Europe seemed only to help the likes of Sonny Criss and Lucky Thompson. Both managed career revivals following stints in Europe.
  13. I like Byas, big tone. His problem might be that he went to Europe too much. It's always interesting joining Byas , Lucky T and Dexter as they had much in common. Byas's Vogue sides are a pretty good representation of his art.
  14. sorry to say but this one is rarely spun in these parts as this isn't exactly Hanks greatest session. Good cover and decent trumpet do not a good album make. Average only.
  15. isnt Q -tip something you put in your ears to remove wax !!!
  16. when will we hear what the correct answer is?? the shape of the poll will reflect more on the nature of the board than AH's greatness or otherwise. I voted for him being amongst the top 5 pianist, on the basis of the joy I get from his playing and compostions. Roll on October
  17. so far new Bill mcHenry (FSNT) with Paul Motian ( a bit of a departure from the textures of the previous two albums) Julian Cannonball Adderley (Verve) - nice stuff, I seem to appreciate his earlier stuff more and more by comparison with his later Riverside and Capitol material
  18. The entire Art Pepper Galaxy set appears to have the twangy bass thing as far as I can tell. It's just ok but seems incredible that no one noticed that the sound had taken a backward step with this pick-up miking.
  19. I really struggled getting the disc off the spindle in the new Cannonball Verve offering. Not a good design in otherwise quite smart packaging.
  20. This was one of the first CDs I bought, my first exposure to Rollins and so it has a special place for me as it were. The sound on the late 80s Bluebird CD is pretty good as I remember it.
  21. me too regarding the Stitt Mosaic, I have this waiting at home as a taster of what the Mosaic set might be like.
  22. The Eager is an amazing issue. A labour of love I would guess. It's not just archaelogy but the music stands up very well. The sound is very listenable indeed and needed not be feared. Besides Eager you get some Parker, Serge Chaloff and Dick Twardzik and Bud Powell all previously unissued !!!! I don't know how Uptown does it but long may this line of issues continue.
  23. This is one of those albums that I have often though would be good to hear. However sloppy ZYX versions of other OJC CDs in the past always have made me wary. In too many the CD inserts are poorly printed on rough grade paper nad the CDs seem particulary flimsy. Pity really as this sounds like a must have.
  24. Costa's dates as leader would be excellent too. How about a BN/UA Cecil Taylor set ?
  25. Really looking forward to this. Mitchell impressed me on the Thad Jones small group Mosaic set.
