I’d suggest the first i bought Complete Blue Note Herbie Nicols i doubt I’ll ever forget the sense of discovery. Scores of box sets later it still stands

This another sad piece of news. I was lucky enough to see him perform with a Marshal Allen and Avreeayl Ra playing an improvised set to accompany a Japanese silent movie (Oedipus iirc)

My picks from Lee’s career might be... Early- anything with Tristano and Warne late early career - meeting with Warne Marsh ( Atlantic) mid career- Motion (Verve) with Elvin late career- Dig-it (Steeplechase) with the incredibly fabulous Ted Brown.

I’m must play this one. Picked up the LP for tuppence and perhaps as a result have hardly played it. Btw tuppence = £25 (in this case)...

I saw him live firstly in the late 80s , memory is hazy as to the touring line up . Second time was 1995 Old Fruitmarket Glasgow with Motian, Lovano, Frisell ( Broadway) finally in 2000 he played with a local section who acquitted themselves very well. I recall his delight that bassist Kenny Ellis knew Tristano’s ‘317 East 32nd St.’ well enough to play in unison during Lee’s ‘solo’. I think that was the last time.

Sad loss but what a life. I was playing some Konitz yesterday and reflected on his longevity. Amazing career. I was lucky enough to see him play a number of times RIP

It’s the Cellar Door set I want at a non insane price

It’s been awhile but I recall the Revenant 2CD of Taylor’s to be in mostly decent sound but with lo-fi alternative takes . My LP copy on Debut sounds vastly better though.

hmm...... I listened again to “jazz corner of the world” and I’m sticking to my impression that it’s the worst of JM albums of that era . Some great tracks but the whole thing is underwhelming. I say that as a big fan of Mobley, Morgan etc think I’ll pass on this new one

Miles Davis ————Dark Magus———-( Sony Japan) 1977 issue/reissue. had this for years but on coming back I’m stuck how dark it is, albeit not as black as Pangea etc...All the traces of funk / groove which made Bitches Brew so hummable are gone.

Anyone care to offer an insight regarding the sound on this set. If it’s an app improvement on the Galaxy set I’ll be interested. I find the low volume sound and poor presentation of the 16CD ( cheap Euro edition ) set a real deterrent.

Johnny Coles————Little Johnny C————( BN) mono NY I've always had a soft spot for this session. Great numbers by a more than competent band. Duke P shines here as he so often does.

I really like the HMV issues of Trane’s Impulse catalog. I’ll have about half a dozen, all monos and all sound and feel lovely. As I understand it these were made from copy tapes sent to the UK. The ALS UK copy was used for the 2CD issue of ALS. They’d probably survived better because they hadn’t been repeatedly used for reissue after reissue. Ultimately it doesn’t matter as the music on A Love Supreme sucks you in totally such that audio geekery becomes inconsequential...

Interested for sure . Is this one of those sessions that Cuscuna marked up as a reject or is this a ‘new’ discovery?

Keith Tippett/ Andy Sheppard———-66 Shades of Lipstick —-—-( Editions EG) Recorded 30 years ago this July. I probably bought this based on a review in The Wire. Back in the days when the late Richard Cook was editor. It’s a fine album although I do recall thinking it a tad forbidding at the time. Mind you back then I couldn’t get my head around Cecil Taylor. ......

Sad news . An amazing musician of the highest order. I recall him looking pretty frail when I saw him perform over a decade ago. Last of the quartet..,

Well remembered I think you might be right. I’ve pretty much stopped adding 78s to my collection on account of just how much space and weight they take up. I’ve a fair number of Esquire UK 78 issues of Dial material. My understanding is that these date from the early 50s so were released later than the Dials. The sound is usually very good but I’ve no idea whether they had access to masters or metal parts etc . They certainly don’t sound like the 78 dubs that I’ve come across.

According to HJ in the past products that had ‘Iran’ in the title caused the same issues. I’d agree that the sound on Duo Exchange is excellent as is the music . I’m pretty partial to Frank Lowe having been bowled over by a live performance with Billy Bang many years ago.
