  1. Mercifully just one, But Beautiful (09:39) It’s soporific, to put it mildly
  2. Its a cracker - based on my listening to 2 out of the 3 LPs in the vinyl edition
  3. I recall this being pretty good although my copy was well used/worn ! Arthur Jones----Scorpio----(America) Interesting set. Curiously Discogs dates this issue to 1971 the same year as the BYG release. Seems odd given that they are both French labels. The liners to the America issue are just in English - perhaps this edition was for export ? Sound/pressing is better than typically found from BYG issues.
  4. new arrival - great , great band for Tubby in wonderful sound. Pity this hasn't seen a vinyl release. The CD was only issued this week and seems to be close to sold out Tubby Hayes --- Antibes '62----(Jazz in Britain)
  5. I have one of the Shandars and knew that the music was top drawer Ra and in great sound. No regrets
  6. I've had a meditative afternoon of randomly pulling Sun Ra LPs off my shelves prompted by the RSD 2025 release of the Fondation Maeght concerts. I wasn't going to get the Maeght but was offered it at cost price so I couldn't refuse. The music and sound is superlative of course. So this afternoon reissues from the past decade. Monorails and Satellites (3 LP set) Roma '77 ( double LP) Heliocentric Worlds Vol.1 Featuring Pharoah Sanders and Black Harold All solid sets with Roma '77 possibly the most unusual . I really need to stop buying Sun Ra because I have way too much already but it's never disinteresting ( or at least the ones I pick up !)
  7. I've long accepted that "box office" always comes further up the bill than the artists I'd be interested in. I'm mindful however that the former effectively bankroll the latter less commercially viable acts.
  8. My first copy of this was a very noisy pressing , it's a nice enough session from the master. I have rather of lot of Solal on LP and CD. His 50s Vogue recordings would be good place to start. Evan Parker----- Tracks-----(Incus 42) Signed copy ( I think by EP !) Very fine session , sound is great even if the recording was digital
  9. That sort of behaviour drives me wild. Dave Burrell----la vie de boheme----(Actuel) Black label original release. Amazingly quiet pressing with no stuck groove on either side. Very different from your average BYG session
  10. Janusz Muniak----Question Mark ----(Muza) 1978 Warsaw Decent post Trane session, had this one a while , came in bunch of other Polish jazz LPs. I don't know anything about the players ( its a quintet with piano, guitar , sax and rhythm section)
  11. Joe Newman----plays in Paris -------(Vega) French 10 inch LP Nice title Parisian session from 1957. Despite all the Basie alumni it doesn't sound exactly like a Basie session, a bit lighter on its feet.
  12. Great album, my copy has exactly the same cut out..
  13. Sadao Watanabe----Round trip----(CBS/Sony) Japan issue 1970 Cracking album from the uneven Watanabe with an all star line up. Original sound is a little on the thin side but it's an excellent session from NYC July 1970.
  14. I'd not realised this..a friend picked this up for me when he was record shopping in Tokyo a few weeks ago.
  15. Joe Henderson----henderson's habiliment------(Victor) 2025 Japanese reissue ,
  16. Art Pepper - Smack Up - (Vogue UK mono) Many possible titles could contend for Art's best early phase output. This would definitely be on my list...
  17. Good Citizen was the release that really turned my head to her qualities.
  18. the Borderlands Trio discs on Intakt (Astroidea and Rewilder) are great places to get acquainted
  19. A few recent arrivals Kris Davis Trio---Run the Gauntlet----(Pyroclastic) Sentient beings---- Truth is not the enemy----(discus music) The Exu-----s/t---------(discus music) All excellent in very different ways. Discus releases seem to come from all over the categories of music ( always good/excellent) but these two are solidly in the jazz tradition. Kris Davis is an absolute favourite of mine.
  20. I've been exploring Discus Music's output lately. It's highly varied but high quality consistently. Today it's a Paul Dunmall. I've only a couple of discs with him on ( Fanfares & Freedom with Laura Jurd on Discus). Red Hot Ice is quite James Brown or JR Walker in parts. A fair cast mostly unknown to me other than Martin Archer and Corey Mwamba. I really like this Paul Dunmall - Red Hot Ice
  21. My copy arrived the other day. I'd agree fully. I'm impressed so far with the 3 LPs I've listened to. Music excellent as is pressing quality - very quiet.
  22. sad news, a very fine musician
  23. Clearly jazz aficionados are able to confront their own mortality. My wife has "encouraged" me to downsize my collection of LPs , 78s and CDs. I sell some stuff on Discogs and to a dealer friend. I've long since got rid of junk and slimmed my 78s down to about five hundred. I will only sell stuff on Discogs that is in excellent condition as I don't want to deal with complaints from buyers who allergic to the odd bit of surface noise. The majority of CDs/LPs in the departure lounge however go to a charity shop for the local hospice. My other vice is darkroom photography, specifically film cameras of which I have very many. All vital of course and get used at least once a year. So basically my detritus spreads everywhere, hence I'm receptive to the requests to limit things..
