I am still waiting for the Rossini disc, but the post to SA is pretty slow. If you can find in the second hand shops a copy of the LP "love for sale" It is a must. It is just a trio with Kate on vocal Mike on piano and Chris Biscoe on sax on some tracks. Chris is a really nice player, underated. Very theatrical interpretations by Kate. If you are into hifi, it is a stunning recording too.

I do not disagree that it is a good set, all I am saying that they are some low points and high points as with every artist. There is no doubt that on some tracks Anita 's pitch left a lot to be desired. I also owned "Sings the winners" "Sings the most" "Cool Heat" and a few others and basically I did not discover more "great stuff" on the Mosaic set. And the fact remains that some of the recordings sound quality is problematic on some tracks

Took the plunge and bought the Mosaic box, 9 cds over 700 minutes of music. I've been listening to most of it sampling the different periods I must admit that the collections contains lots of highs, but quite a few lows. On the early discs Anita's pitch could be way off, and her scatting sounded hesitant. I did not read all the details yet, but it is quite obvious that from disc no 3 the improvements in her singing are dramatic. On disc no 1 the recording quality is very variable from good to very poor which is not the norm for Mosaic. Was it a good buy??? Yes for the completist and collectors, but if one just wants to hear the best of Anita, 3 or 4 of her best cds will suffice.

I also bought one on Ebay recently, as you said not essential and the sound is pretty good. Helen never made a bad recording but like with everybody else some are better than others. And some of them are just marvellous. Her latest effort "Lilac wine" also with strings has some really nice numbers on it. Lots of feelings from Helen, on of her best effort in recent years.

Cadence is asking 17$ the swiss francs is quite strong compare to the $ Not a bad deal.

Jeeez!!!!!!!!! woowww!!!!!!!!!!, not only she sounds like the real thing, sings with passion and she looks like a real woman!!! and Italian too. Here I go, I'm falling in love again!!! Roberta, Roberta, Roberta.!!!!!
-
As I said it was recorded by a Swiss radio station. The cd does not exist as such, it was an off-air recording put on cdr by a friend of mine. Roberta has been performing in the USA with Roy Hargrove. I believe her manager is the same as Roy. Wondering if some of you guys seen her perform. I read somewhere that she would be in Boston soon.

Just received a recording (2cds) done in Bern Switzerland in 2003. She is accompanied by Ronnie Mathews on piano, Roy Hargrove on trumpet, Jimmy Wood on bass, and Willie Jones 111 on drums. What a set! I think that it was recorded for Swiss radio. This girl is just plain amazing, how comes she does not have a recording contract?? This is really a mystery, Verve or Blue Note should grab her. Don't they know when they hear/see something really good, or maybe she is too good ?? Has any of you guys seen Roberta Gambarini perform.

I love this albulm. The Monk and Ibrahim influence are obvoius. She also like to startle the listener and demand attention, intense stuff. At first it may sound quite "out"but after a few listenings you will dicover that the music is well stuctured. One of my fav cd of 2003. In general theUS audience is not well exposed to European jazz, such a pity!! As I think it as a freshess and openess that is quite different. Your comments are awaited with anticipation

I only have "on Duke's birthday" which is great. I had 2 lps "Love for sale" and the Rossini, live in Zurich one, which was on Hat Art, maybe you could find them in Switzerland??

Carla is nice, I own 2 of her cds, but too compare her to Helen or Anita this is a different story. Mind you, I should know better we should not compare, but at the end of the day we all do, when I sit down to listen to music, I make a choice!! Thanks I'll spin Carla tonight!!

Wondering if anybody in the US knows them. A visit to their website is a must http://www.westbrookjazz.co.uk/index.shtml I am actually looking for somebody to make me a copy of a cd called "Love for sale" I had the lp many years ago and till today it remains my definitive version of the song. Mike and Kate are surely amongst the most creative musicians today.

I do enjoy "Casa Forte" maybe not her best but still better than 95% of jazz vocals produced today. Yes, where are the originals?? the girls with "a sound" everybody seem to sound the same lately.

I am busy discovering Anita O'Day and enjoying every minutes. I bought 3 cds, "Sings the most" Sings the winners" and the cd with arrangements by Jimmy Guiffre. I cannot afford the Mosaic box, so what's next?? Your input is required urgently I am hooked. "My heart belongs to Daddy" on the Guiffre set just sounds so sexy woww!!

Her "Chicago piano solo live" is full of humor, Monk, and Ibrahim influences are evident, other good ones are the duo's cds with Pierre Favre and Han Bennink. Han is always fun anyway. As far as other women musicians try "4 roses" an all woman group with pianist Florence Melnotte. Florence just released a duo cd with Brian Torff (bass) that is exceptional. Drummer Beatrice Graaf plays in various outfits that have been released on the Enja label.

Red Mitchell on The Helen Merrill cd Clear out of this world. lot's of fun.

I am amazed that Irene Schweizer is not mentioned. If you like the more adventurous type of music, she is one that should be looked at. She actually did a duo cd with Marylin Crispell Including all the other duo albums with various drummers Wonderful stuff.
-
I really enjoy the 4cds set with Waldron "Dreher 1981" (Duo) Really intense stuff. "Morning joy" with Steve Potts is another one of my fav. I must say I am not a fan of Irene Aebi thus I tend to neglect the recordings where she appears.
-
Maybe it is slightly off topic but I saw Louis Moholo (the drummer) last month playing with Swiss pianist extraordinaire Irene Schweizer. His recording on the Intak label he did with Irene in the late eighties is great but I was disapointed with him this time round. Speaking to Irene later at a workshop she also admitted that they where somehow playing in different directions and this was maybe due to Louis not knowing some of the new material. I also did not like his attitude during the concert wondering on and off the stage, acting, or maybe he was slightly under the influence. Anyway this was my impression. Irene was fabulous.

hI, I managed to find a box in Canada, not cheap, at 80$ but really worth it Just pure magic. Thanks again for your input.
