What artist did you discover for the first time in 2005?
jazz1 replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Artists
2 female jazz singers Nancy King and Elizabeth Kontomanu I cannot believe that I did not come accross them before. Nancy has a real jazz voice and feel which is just so rare today. Then Elizabeth a French singer. I was sent a copy of her last cd. with John Scofield is her musical partner on this CD (Waiting for Spring, Nocturne 2005: www.nocturne.fr) If you like serious jazz vocal it is a must. jazz1 -
Hugh Masekela is to me the most overated trumpet player. In the 6o's at least he was playing jazz, today he playing African pop and has no more chops, but the name alone still sells.

Try "Circle dancing" an amazing cd where she does it all. Straight ballad singing, daring improvisations, but always remaining musical. One of the great vocal cd of our time and the backing musicians are top notch. "Beautiful Love" is a great cd too. Listening to Jay, one can hear how many of today's singers have taken cues from her teaching.
-
I think that times has arrived to recognize real talent. When it comes to jazz singing, very few can compare to Jay Clayton I was glad to see that her cd "Circle dancing" made the top 30's in Down Beat best jazz vocal recordings ever. (It is one of my favorite too) She is one the the few artist alive that made the list. Even motre important is that the top 30 list was selected by jazz vocalists. Any comments?? Thanks jazz1

A typical stupid question would be. Why my wife doesn't like Anthony Braxton's music??? or Why do my dogs don't mind??
-
I have most things by Jeanne Lee, she is one of the great. I will investigate Patty Waters, if it is on ESP it must be different!! Thanks a million
-
GAS??? could be many things but in this context I refered to the Great American Songbook. You know the stuff by Porter, Kern, Gerswin etc!!
-
Pinky is great, a beautiful interpreter of GAS, I love her stuff but she is not what I've asked for. a creative, improvisers that takes chances
-
Jeez, thanks very much. Something too look forward to. Where do I start??
-
Looks likeit it is what I am looking for. I have too investigate all 3 Many thanks.
-
I do enjoy Patricia Barber "Verse" cd Karryn is a little too straight for me. Thanks
-
I love Norma Winstone, looks like you understand what I am looking for. I will have too investigate Maria Pia Vito. BTW, I enjoy Tiziana Ghiglioni a lot Thanks for the recomendations

I am looking for new vocalists. I have most of the output of the artist you mentioned. I listen to lots of music, instrumental, jazz and classical. but I do have a weakness for jazz vocalists BTW: I would not call Sathima a modern singer taking chances, improvising etc. Her intonations problems can be very disturbing too. Sheila Jordan is again a little problematic to my ears, too much mannrisms and again huge intonation problems. From the 4 ladies you mentioned the one that comes the closer to what I am looking for is Jeanne Lee.

I am a jazz vocalists fan and I must admit that I am getting bored with the current standard fare. I do enjoy the GAS singers of the past and some of the present, but please do not recommend new singers that are doing the same old thing. Then I much rather listen to Helen Merrill or Sarah Vaughan. To me most of the new crop of so-called jazz singers are in a way "cover singers" or pop singers with a jazz rythm section. Yes I am refering to Diana Krall and Jane Monheit and the likes. In the last year I discovered vocalists such as Jay Clayton, Judy Niemack, Kendra Shank. I am really enjoying what they are doing I wonder if any of you could suggest some more singers for me to discover. What I am interested in are vocalist that have there own sound, style, are creative, good improvisers and are not scared to go off the beaten track. Surely this is what jazz is all about after all. I hope that I am not asking too much thanks. jazz1

Actually one of my fav Stanko is his recording with Krzysztof Komeda on the double cd "Live at Jazz Jamboree" on the Polonia label. Some great numbers on it, especially "Astigmatic" and "Kattorna" Michal Urbaniak is also featrured on 3 tracks. Great stuff.

Love for sale?? is it the cd or the lp. I love this disk. If it is the cd, can you burn me a copy???

One of your compatriote "Deborah Tanguy quintet" gave a stunning performance last night at Cape Town University. It was just one of these night when all the musicians and the audience clicked. Plain amazing, this girl is a star. The reason I 've posted this item is because Deborah won a prize "best new young artist" by a jury presided by Martial Solal. You can find more on Deborah on the Jazz valley website.

I bought the double cd "Best of live" which is great, most of his famous songs are on it and the recording is just superb. Does anybody know if somebody put words (In English) to Mingus "Fable of Faubus" It is such a nice tune. Nougaro version is great.
-
I agree with you 100%, so many beautiful songs wasted, butchered, destroyed, I quite like her early stuff including the albulm with Ray Charles. Helen Merrill being my favorite I suppose that Betty Carter could not be further away in style from La belle Helen.
-
I Like Sheila in small doses I find that her pitch too unsettling. Sure she has a good jazz feel. My fav are the few cds she did with Harvy Swartz.

CD player Merdian 508/24 Integrated Amp Gryphon Callisto 2100 Speakers own design based on Pro Ac Response 2.5 using better drive units and components. Sounds much more transparent, more extended bass and ultra musical than original 2.5. Top of the range Cardas cables all the way. Room 30ft X 20 ft Result: Amazingly natural sounding, never fatiguing even at high volume. I am an happy audiophile. System sounds better than going to most live venues.
