  1. The LA Times just ran an obit by Don Heckman who died a few years ago! https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/music/story/2024-11-12/roy-haynes-dead-jazz-drummer-band-leader-99
  2. Well to answer my own questions: Peter Losin tells me: For "Stella," the originally-issued version consists of take 3 until the end of the tpt introduction, then the remainder from take 7. The edit point is 1:39, at which point an extra beat is introduced.
  3. But does that happen on take 7? And is the handover done via an edit? Now I wish I still had a copy of Miles '58 given that take 7 isn't even on the Miles/Coltrane box set.
  4. And as I said above Gene di Novi.
  5. And Gene di Novi. I forgot that he had played with Bird as well as Prez. Radio broadcasts with Bird from Royal Roost on March 5th and March 12th 1949. Recorded with Pres on Dec 29 '47. Results now on Blue Note. To the best of my knowledge still alive and living in Toronto. (Not sure he's still in Toronto.)
  6. Gene di Novi.
  7. Found out when I turned on the radio and heard an (obviously previous prepared) obit on NPR. Glad I got to see him a few years ago. Anyone else left who played with Bird?
  8. They don't seem to have discs 5&6 up(yet). Maybe Sony wanted to make sure you had to buy the cds to hear the whole set. Or maybe Spotify just doesn't like Wayne.
  9. I preordered it so it arrived yesterday. Kicking myself till I saw they only charged the new price. Nice package and they give credit to Peter Losin for supplying some of the source material.
  10. You're in for some treats: I think Peanuts appears on more cuts here than anyone else.
  11. I appreciate all that Mosaic does and know that they have limited resources but perhaps they should consider asking volunteers to help on the editing, proof reading and layout of their booklets: e.g. pages 19-20.
  12. Another one is the timing on the alternate take of "You Do Something to Me".
  13. Saw him with the quartet in a large Montreal club . Before June'65 but not sure when. I sat on the side of stage next to Elvin so I couldn't hear Jimmy. I don't remember anything except that I was enthralled.
  14. As is often the case, I'm confused. In the booklet for Discs V-V111 at the bottom of the listings for session Y (Bobby Hackett) it says "note: This session is heard in it's entirety and in the order in which it was recorded on Disk III." huh, isn' that what they've just listed for disc VI?
  15. It's a great set but I like the Spanier with Pee Wee even better because, well, Pee Wee.
  16. I don't think Ray Charles should be on this list. I don't think he was ever belittled anywhere despite his popularity. (I, of course could be wrong.)
  17. The sound track (with many extra takes) became available on a Fontana cd.
  18. IIRC Love for Sale wasn't on Jazztrack. It first appeared on Circle in the round.

  20. BTW Peter Losin thinks it's not Bird soloing on Margie. I agree with him. (He thinks it's a tenor "probably Bob Mabane" .)
  21. I think they wanted to lead off with the best stuff.
  22. I once heard an interview with Benny Golson where he said Earl Bostic was the greatest alto player he ever heard. (Or something like that -- it was 40 years ago. ) The only radio station in my home town (which never played jazz) did play Bostic's version of Harlem Nocturne.
  23. I find this true of nearly every book I've read recently.
  24. It's a mistake: it's 3:45 and like most of the cd it's terrific. BTW The cd is now up on Spotify.
