One of my favorites from a long list of favorites by Mr. Green. All I've got is the Captial BN reissue from the '90s, but it sounds ok, since I've never heard another version. His music kind of snuck up on me. I've never been very partial to jazz guitar in general, but between his style and his bandmates, I got sucked in pretty fast. I now own more music by him (mostly cds) than any other jazz guitarist.

Cal Tjader and Eddie Palmieri - El Sonido Nuevo (Verve)WLP/DG The title tune really sizzles!

Cal Tjader's Ritmo Caliente (Fantasy) original red vinyl That's a heavy record. It must be over 180gm.

Thanks for the enlightenment. I think I'll pick through the albums instead.

I recently bought an original pressing that was still sealed and I loved it. I knew nothing of its existence and I haven't been that knowledgeable of either party, but it's got a hip sound to me. Some of it's straight ahead, some of it's funky and some of it's in between. Anyway I found it refreshing, what some might call retro I suppose. I realised on the second spin that the title of the album was more than just the title of a song on the album. I laughed at myself when I started counting during the songs and it was .....wait a minute....that one's in 3/4 too! How is the Jazz Crusaders Mosaic Box? I know they're expensive, but I also acquired a clean copy of The Jazz Crusaders at the Lighthouse on Pacific Jazz a few months ago and really like it. Is this representative of the content of the Mosaic box? My introduction to this band was later when they were just the Crusaders and although I had heard they were a lot jazzier in their early days, I had never heard any of the music.

Stan Getz with Cal Tjader (Fantasy/OJC) I just finished reading the excellent thread on Cal Tjader which reminded me that I had this album.

The Jazz Brothers - The Mangione Brothers Sextet (Riverside)DG Mono I'm not the biggest fan of Chuck's later stuff, but this one's pretty good.

How is this album compared to the first one or the others by Gabor that you like? There's a copy at one of my local stores and it's not as in good a shape as the others they had that I bought so I passed on it for now. Maybe I should trade my copy of 1969 in for that one anyway. I like this one a lot, and sure, I'd say trade 1969 for it. Thanks! I think that's what I'll be doing. Right now, I'm listening to Anysley Dunbar's Retaliation - To Mum, From Anysley and the Boys (Bluethumb) Stereo Haven't listened to that in ages.

Maybe you can pm a moderator with your concern, but you can't talk about it on the board for all to see, so how can you post on that board without it looking like nothing is wrong. If you try, your post will either be edited or deleted. It's happened to me several times, so I give up. Even my pm converstaion with Steve wasn't very helpful or educational. He never really answered my questions and told me in a cryptic way that he couldn't respond due to job security. Here I was thinking that someone who actually works with master tapes would be the expert and could provide me with simple generic answers about them. He basically backed his moderators actions up by saying they were just trying to protect him. It appeared to me that he thought I was after him on a personal level, even though I kept saying that I was interested in a few "facts" about master tape life span that he was alluding to. I will never believe that magnetic tape has an infinite life span as he and some of his gorts believe. Nothing lasts forever and to propose such an idea as fact is just ludicrous. Simple - if you don't like the forum's rules (such as sending PMs to moderators instead of airing criticism publicly) and/or the way things are handled/moderated, don't post. Edit: I've had enough of this and I'm out of here. I was just responding to this. I wonder why some people who are very critical about the Hoffman forum on this board are posting over there as if nothing's wrong... If you look at my post count for the amount of time I've been on the board, you'll see I don't post very much there anyway. I'll be posting even less from now on and may stop going there at all. I apologize if I hit a nerve. -

In a related way, I think this is what's wrong with the moderators (gorts) on Hoffman's board. They may be so infatuated with his work and they want to be close to the man and "help him out" so they can feel like they are in his inner circle and hence are over the top in their approach to moderating. They are protecting Steve and his name in their eyes and they are doing him a lot of harm in the process. If you go out to wikipedia and search Steve Hoffman's name, you'll find an entry that was started by one of his fans who thought he was important enough to warrant a place there. What has happened is a big fight and it's quite interesting from the perspective of understanding how things get documented in Wikipedia. In the mean time, my resepect for Hoffman continues to dwindle. -

http://stereocentral.tv/phpbb/index.php Lots of really hateful, juvenile stuff here, but also some funny (and warranted) bitching, mostly about the moderators and some of the more zealous sycophants. And no, I don't post there. Personally, I like Steve and his work, but some of his followers are a bit wacky. Agreed. His moderators are overzealoused in their "protection" of Steve's rep. I'm not out to damage Steve or his work. I don't agree with the deleting and editing of people's posts, as it makes it hard for me to believe what is presented there. I suppose it's Steve's website and he can do what he wants, but personally since I've seen the editing in action it only soils his reputation from my point of view. At least with websites like this place, people can say what they feel and I can decide on my own what I should filter out and what to believe. BTW, what is the information source for this supposedly bad vinyl being used at RTI? -

Did he? He did to me. He informed me that due to my posts, I was on some list of his moderators and they (not him) would follow me around on the internet to see if I was speaking badly of Steve. I think they have banned some people in the past for dissing Steve on other sites. It seemed a little wierd to me and even Steve typed the word sigh after informing me of his over protective moderators actions. Initially I was a little irritated by the idea, but I have nothing to hide There is some good information on his site that is worth gleaning, but on the other side, there sure are a lot of freaks on that board imo. I called Steve on this hypocrisy but I got no response regarding that matter. It's ok though, at least he knows some of the people who populate his board are not complete drones. -

That depends. I understand Steve Hoffman was hired solely to do the mastering, nothing else; if that is correct he cannot be held responsible for the quality of the vinyl. What I think they could do at the Hoffman site, however, is forward any complaints to those who are responsible or at least provide customer service contact info. Yes, he is not responsible for the production of the actual vinyl, but since he's involved with the product, I don't think he's really in a position to say anything negative. At least that was the jest of my communications with Steve about the mag tape topic. The industry is a small one and if you bad mouth the end product while it's still in circulation, you might not get the call for the next job. -

This is very true. I asked Steve Hoffman some very generic questions regarding magnetic tape quality with regards to lifespan and had posts deleted several times and even got a pm from Steve because he and one or some of his moderators thought I was trying to bad mouth Steve's work, which I wasn't. Steve said his moderators had me on a list and were going to follow me around on the internet and see if I was dissing Steve. (Hi guys!) I guess that means I was almost kicked off the board eveb though I wasn't specifically talking about any particular label or company or person about this matter. He never did answer some of my questions, even via pms when it came to that. I don't know if he overlooked them or intentionally ignored them, but he wasn't very forthcoming with his answers. I understand why he doesn't feel like he can be straight with us, but if allegations become known facts, it won't look very good for him or RTI. -
If I could get myself to stop buying music for a month or two, I'd have one paid for. Someday, someday..... You should, how much time do you spend buying (on-line or in shops) instead of listening? Consider this: I bought a RCM five or six month ago, don't remember, since then I always listened to different records in order to clean them and I am far way to have all cleaned. Probably it will takes some years for it. Will I start to buy again when I'll have all cleaned? Don't know, at those time I'll be sure I listened to my records at least twice, when I bought them and when I cleaned them, but do I really "know" them in a couple of listening? I don't think so. Dig in your records is my suggestion...and buy a RCM. Good advise and I've been given the same before by others. Gone are the days where I know every record I own really well. That's the problem with disposable income and an obsession. When I could only afford one or two records a month, I knew those records inside and out, all the lyrics, etc. Not anymore. A moratorium makes a lot of sense on several levels.
