  1. Yes. Comparing the CD layer of the RVG Blue Train SACD with the CD layer of the Analog Productions Blue Train SACD reveals that the RVG version has about 3.7 dB worth of digital limiting applied to make it sound louder. The AP version doesn't have any limiting. I think what RVG was trying to do is increase the sound of the drums and bass in the right channel relative to the piano and horns in the left channel, to do this he used limiting mainly on the right channel. Why he did this I have no idea. The major difference in sound is that the RVG SACD sounds very thin and lacks bass. These mastering choices for me means it has a very harsh sound. I have made a comparison of the CD layers of both discs here.
  2. Which one do you think sounds the best in terms of sound quality? I was thinking of getting another one, I am leaning towards Lee-Way, but would like to get one that sounds really good. I find that RVG recordings of the late 1950s and early 1960s can be a bit hit or miss in terms of recording quality. It seems he was still trying to perfect his stereo recording methods.
  3. Yeah I agree mastering is most important. In fact I wish these Analog Productions releases were just plain CDs. That way they would be cheaper, and they would actually be able to release them on time instead of waiting ages for the SACD pressing.
  4. Right, it's not. They appear to be running about 2 months behind schedule on these SACDs. Two months and counting... Yeah I have been waiting a month and a half for Joe Henderson - Page One to ship from CDPacific.com. Apparently there are only two SACD pressing plants left in the U.S., so they often suffer huge backlogs. The only one I have received so far is Blue Train which sounds fantastic, it is much better than the old RVG SACD version that has massive high frequency boosting, and seems to have hardly any bass. In fact a direct comparison reveals that RVG applied almost 4 dB of compression to his version. Why RVG applies compression to these recordings I have no idea. This is Jazz music, not rock and roll, it doesn't need to be made louder for the sake of loudness alone.
  5. I hear that viewpoint often with regard to re-mixing early stereo. I think it's much more important to be faithful to the spirit of the music than it is to be faithful to a 50-year-old bad decision made by an ill-informed engineer. I disagree that they were bad or ill-informed decisions. Exaggerated channel separation was standard procedure for stereo mixing during that period, and it wasn't simply limited to music. If you listen to stereo soundtracks in 1950s films (especially those made in CinemaScope) you will hear extreme separation of the sound (music, sound effects and dialogue) as well. Mixing the sound that way was done by for a reason - to accentuate and exaggerate the new technology. Isn't the way the music was recorded and mixed originally part of the "spirit of the music"? Or do we impose newer mixing standards on the music so we can pretend it was made a decade later? I don't understand why recordings of that period should conform to contemporary mixing methods. Just as I don't think films of that period should be changed (more edits, shaky camera work perhaps) to make them look and sound more like contemporary films. If you don't like the original stereo mix, you can always find buy an original mono LP.
  6. There is one important difference between the 1997 Time Out CD and the Legacy Edition version, the new version isn't encoded in HDCD. This means you don't need a HDCD player to hear the full dynamic range of the tapes on the new version. Before you would need an HDCD player to hear the full peak extension. This meant the old version played in a non-HDCD player sounds slightly peak limited compared to the new version. If you do have an HDCD player then they will both sound the same. Surely they are trying to be faithful to the original stereo LPs? I still think for these 50th Anniversary Editions they should've included both stereo and mono mixes.
  7. SecondSpin has a new promo code: SS25APR for 25% off of second hand items, for orders placed before 23rd of April.
  8. I received the Wounded Bird reissue of Night Music this week, only to find out that both of these albums are available on iTunes Store for $5.99 each. U.S. iTunes store links: Night Music and Master of the Art.
  9. I think these discs sound great, I don't think they need to be redone. They were done by Vic Anesini who is a great mastering engineer. I agree with you however that the packaging looks silly. I see so many suggestions in this thread that haven't been added to the Legacy page! Add them! It only 'costs' one vote.
  10. The Quad mixes they have released on SACD are really good. I have Headhunters and Mysterious Traveler by Weather Report, which both sound fantastic in quad.
  11. I just added another suggestion, more CTI Jazz concert recordings unedited: http://legacyrecordings.uservoice.com/page...ggestions/77261
  12. There's one already up about remastering the rest of the Mahavishnu Orchestra catalogue: http://legacyrecordings.uservoice.com/page...ggestions/76979 I read somewhere a year ago that Legacy was going to reissue Between Nothingness and Eternity along with an extra CD of a previously unreleased show. Sadly it looks like that has gone nowhere. Thanks for the VSOP vote! I suggested that one too.
  13. Legacy has created a webpage that lets you suggest and vote for reissues: http://legacyrecordings.uservoice.com/pages/general?limit=50 Legacy owns material originally released by the following labels: http://www.legacyrecordings.com/associated.aspx Regarding Jazz, they own everything by Columbia and RCA. I've already added some jazz related ones. You can suggest or vote for 10 different items. Here are some I have added: Miles Davis - Complete Fillmore 1970 concerts: http://legacyrecordings.uservoice.com/page...ggestions/76711 Miles Davis - Complete Japan 1975 concerts: http://legacyrecordings.uservoice.com/page...ggestions/76713 Miles Davis - Complete 1980s Columbia Sessions: http://legacyrecordings.uservoice.com/page...ggestions/76741 Wynton Marsalis - Black Codes (From the Underground) 2 CD Reissue: http://legacyrecordings.uservoice.com/page...ggestions/76719
  14. I emailed the ABC Jazz presenter, and he was able to figure out what it was in all of 10 minutes! It turns out that it is the Mike Nock Trio. Mike Nock is a famous Australian pianist. Here I was thinking it would be some European group on ECM! The track is available on this CD http://shop.abc.net.au/browse/product.asp?productid=381282 Unfortunately the entire set is unavailable. It was recorded by the ABC for their own broadcast.
  15. That's the Jazz show from their FM radio channel, not their dedicated Jazz channel that is sent through free to air digital TV.
  16. Thanks for these possibilities. I'll check through some samples on AllMusic.com when I have time. They don't have a search function, they just have an auto updating webpage that shows what they have recently played. It is back working now, but it wasn't working at the time they played the song: http://www.abc.net.au/dig/jazz/justplayed/default.htm
  17. I heard a jazz trio track on digital radio tonight, but I don't know what it was. Sadly the station's track identification software is currently down. So I have no way of knowing what it was, unless someone can identify it. You can download an MP3 of part of the track from here Any help will be greatly appreciated!

  19. WOW, thank you everyone for these suggestions. I have the Freddie Hubbard albums, but didn't realise it is him playing electric bass. But thanks for the other recommendations, I'll have to take my time seeking some of them out.
  20. I mainly lurk on this forum, but I've got a question: I recently picked up the Keepnews remaster of Joe Henderson's album Power To The People. I really like this album, even more so than other Henderson titles I own such as Multiple and Relaxin' at the Camarillo. I in particular like the tracks on the album where Ron Carter is playing electric bass. As I understand it, he isn't much of a fan of that instrument, but he has an amazing ability to create an amazing groove that I really like. So my question is simple, what other good albums feature Ron Carter on electric bass? Even if just a few tracks. Any suggestions will be appreciated. I have the late 60s Miles Davis albums that he plays on, but I can't remember specifically which tracks he plays electric bass on. I think it is only a few. Thanks in advance, Simon
  21. Hi all, I've only just joined, but have lurked in this forum for a while. I got the Williams set today (as well as the Charles Tolliver). To me these sound like well made digital recordings. It would be interesting to compare to the original CDs, but I doubt they are improved due to extensive remastering.
