  1. Damn!! I hate that shit. My wife almost busted her ass quite nicely on some black ice when we first moved up here from Florida. A co-worker of mine lost her father a couple of weekends back when he slipped on ice and busted his head. Boom, dead. Just like that. Terrible.
  2. I actually found Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus to be very disappointing. Of course, I bought it when I was heavily into the live Antibes album. And I don't think anything could have stacked up favorably to that one. Few, if any Mingus studio dates can touch Antibes, IMO. Dolphy is a man possessed. Agreed, on both counts. Eric's solo on Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting is quite possibly the greatest and most exciting sound I've ever heard! Still makes me sad to this day thinking about what could have been if he and Monk would have hooked up.
  3. That's news to me. It was to me, also. I told her she was full of shit. I still haven't received a reply from her as to why she banned me for life this morning. But I'm willing to bet that was the reason. I hadn't done anything else. I think it's a garbage policy on her behalf. Whatever happened to the sense of community that used to exist in the Jazz world at one time? Let's face it, man. We're a bunch of cultural outcasts. We should be doing everything we can to support one another. I just don't get it.
  4. Not odd at all. Lois is damn near in a state of paranoia about other Jazz sites being mentioned on hers. She told me once that this site has the same policy. But I've seen references to both JC and Jazz Corner here several times that Jim didn't delete. And my post that was deleted this morning simply referred to this place as the "O". So only those who were already familiar with this site would have known what the hell I was talking about to begin with. I think she is quite the baby. How embarrassing.

  6. O'Neals Porch has never really grabbed me either. I don't dislike it, but there are many albums of his that I prefer to listen to. I think I like him best with Other Dimensions In Music.
  7. That's probably true. I was just banned for life from JC, and the only reason I can think of is that I mentioned yesterday that I find this site to be superior.
  8. Ornette's Live In New York was definitely better than I thought it would be based upon things I had heard about it.
  9. As much as possible. I have every major label release with Coltrane as leader. And as I said before, My Favorite Things from New Thing At Newport is the greatest version of that tune they ever did, IMO. So yes, their live shit was on fire that year. The only thing I was getting at before is that they finally brought some of that live intensity into the studio in '65. *edit* Howdy, Facely. Nice to see you around these parts!
  10. Bitches Brew - Miles Davis I don't know what to say, gentlemen. I cannot stand this album.
  11. Damn! I hope folks like medjuck and mommy are paying attention. I believe I've posted more about music than anything else today.
  12. Yes to both. Though I still think Live At Birdland may be lost on him because of the lenghty solos. Although, if any tune in the Coltrane catalog would change his mind, it would certainly be the most brilliant version of Afro Blue ever recorded that opens up that disc. I don't think there is any question that the two '64 albums are of the highest quality, but do you honestly think they are superior to the '65 output? If you love Transition, how can you not equally love Sun Ship? And I still feel that First Meditations was the absolute pinnacle of the Classic Quartet. And his very best My Favorite Things was the version that appears on New Thing At Newport. Of course, I'm not trying to challenge you here, and I hope you don't take it that way. Tastes vary, and whether you're talking '64 or '65, you can't go wrong either way. And the more I listen, the more I truly think his music went terribly downhill after '65. Though Live At The Village Vanguard Again! was truly a gem, most of the late Coltrane material was tedious and outrageous. The Olatunji Concert was awesome for the playing, but the sound quality.......oy..........The rest of the '66-'67 material was just short of a travesty. Live In Japan was a mess, and I still haven't come to terms with Interstellar Space. Rashied just wasn't happening for me at that stage. But I will admit that his turn on Gayle's Touchin' On Trane was brilliant. But since we're talking Coltrane (one of my favorite subjects), any thoughts on Live In Seattle? That one has grown on me quite a bit over the years.
  13. Yes. Ballads. Crescent.
  14. ALS still somewhat underwhelms me to this day. But the other two choices are spot on. And I agree. I was not very excited about Africa Brass at all. But what a smoking album! Another one I just thought of that exceeded even my high expectations was The Blues And The Abstract Truth.
  15. Excellent! Thanks, Sundog.
  16. If Bol thinks that Coltrane needed an "editor", I don't think the Vanguard set would sit very well with him. Although, I agree with you on Live At Birdland, which I was just listening to this morning. Your Lady, what a brilliant tune!!! Bol, one more suggestion I would make is Ballads. Low key, and all the tunes are in the 3-4 minute range. It's an incredibly beautiful album.
  17. Yeah Guy, I can't count how many times I've read about how disappointed some of his fans were when a new studio album would come out because what they were doing live at that same point in time was lightyears beyond. I think the main reason the '65 material sounds the way it does is because they finally brought that live intensity into the studio. And I take it from your comments that you disagree about '65 being their best year?
  18. Agreed. Once the Classic Quartet was set, the music didn't make any drastic changes. I feel it got progressively better, but not really that different from where it started out. When I first read this statement I thought, "nahhhh". But actually you're right. Even with the better sound quality (everything in mono, thank god) over the individual cd's, it's still not as good as most of the Impulse! releases. Bol, my largest collection is Coltrane. My advice would be to send it back. If you're lukewarm on what they were doing at that time, this isn't one that will eventually win you over, and could possibly hinder any future enjoyment you may get from Coltranes music. Send it back and pick up either First Meditations, Transition, or Sun Ship. This was the Quartet at it's absolute finest in '65 before they split. If any of his material wins you over, this would be it, IMO.
  19. I keep trying to tell everyone that about myself..................
  20. Impossible!! I love Jarrett, man. But all that fucking noise can really be obtrusive at times. It damn near ruins what I consider to be his best solo effort after Koln, The Vienna Concert. Oh, and the one album I can think of right now that exceeded my expectations was The Peach Orchard. Cooper-Moore's playing on that one is simply out of this fucking world! Even Brown is at the top of his game. Truly a classic album. I should also mention that The Illinois Concert actually exceeded my expectations. I love Dolphy, big time!! And even though that was a killer line-up, for some bizarre reason, I didn't really expect much from it. It ended up being one of my favorite Dolphy's behind OTL.
  21. Not to my recollection. Now THAT should qualify as the single most humorous post of 2007! Thanks, I enjoyed that. Geez............... Now are you pissed off at me too?
  22. are you just basing your opinion on the political with a smattering of "miscellaneous-non political" discussion or the music discussion? The whole nine yards. What, are you yet another one who has their panties in a bunch because I don't talk about music more? How silly.
  23. It can be a little rough there sometimes.
