Is streaming technology saving the music industry?
Scott Dolan replied to A Lark Ascending's topic in Audio Talk
Could you please give an honest answer now? -
Awesome! Timing truly is everything! Hope your nephew's family gets many years of enjoyment from them. My Polk Audio RT25i stand mounts are 20 years old, and still sound fantastic. I didn't want to speak out of turn yesterday without double checking, BUT the ones I have in our game room? The exact model you just purchased, the T15! And they are awesome! Though you smoked me, because I paid $99 for mine 5 years ago... Lighter by a few pounds, and not quite as well built as the RT25i, but the sound quality is far more comparable than one would think, perhaps just shy of completely identical. And I paid $250 for the RT25i's! I gave my old R50 floor standers to a buddy of mine in New York a few years ago, and he absolutely loves them! Polk Audio is THE go to brand I recommend to anyone looking for high quality sound but don't want to break the bank. They build speakers right, and price them almost absurdly reasonably.

Rooster, consider this: I can tell you none of it will disappear with the same amount of certainty that can tell me that 10% or more will. It’s all speculation at this point. Either way, physical copies can be lost, stolen, rendered unplayable, etc... that’s why I personally don’t see the logic in making it seem like potential loss is exclusively attributable to digital/streaming media. -

At any given 5-15 year period in the age of recorded sound has 20-30% of it simply disappeared? And even if it did, why would it now in the age of cheap and massive storage, high speed internet, data service, etc. ? -

Can you expand on how you came by these numbers? -

??? Absolutely, which is why I said this: But let me ask you, How do you manage, store and locate anything in your collection now? For example, is your collection in alphabetical order, genre, era? Let's say I come over and you tell me about this CD/LP that you bought 30 years ago, and haven't listened to for 29. How quickly and easily would it be for you to find it in your collection? -

I disagree in that hard drives are getting smaller and smaller with more and more space for memory. Storing digital media is getting less and less cumbersome by the day, seemingly. And while hard drives will indeed line every landfill, they will have been replaced with newer, smaller, and larger capacity versions. Oh, and the “tiny, tinny forest thing” doesn’t really stand up. ITunes is far easier to quickly navigate by album cover, artist, etc. than my collection of 1000+ CDs. -

That is a really outstanding point, as I’ve noticed that at times, too. For me, the bigger problem is keeping track of what I’ve heard and really liked. I find myself having to make notes on my iPad, or else I’ll never remember. But sometimes I forget... -
It still all comes down to the mastering. A crappy master will sound just as bad on CD as it will on LP, and vice versa.

I still don’t understand why they went with Gregg Williams.

Rock's appearance vs Jazz's appearance
Scott Dolan replied to Simon Weil's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I have to admit that the only real reason I’m going for the Super Deluxe is for the hardback book that comes with it. The one in the Sgt. Pepper set is really, really nice. Big, too. Over 100 pages. Even contained information that I didn’t even know. The studio outtakes are an interesting listen, but kind of a one and done thing. -

Yes. That is the edition of Sgt. Pepper that I bought. Phenomenal packaging and content. Which edition did you get? I believe there were something like four different versions of Sgt. Pepper, but I’m not sure how many this one has. -

Just listened to Glass Onion and Revolution 1 on Apple Music. Will definitely be purchasing the Super Deluxe box set. Giles Martin hit another home run. That cat is just as masterful as his father was. Maybe even more so. -

Absolutely, 100%, this. I remember when I first heard about it, I thought how in the hell can they improve on the 2009 remaster. I was quickly blown away as soon as the opening track started playing. -
GA, Polk Audio is arguably the very best company when it comes to budget speakers. They also build higher end speakers and seem to put as much care and attention into their budget lines. I have owned several pair over the last couple of decades. Floor standers and shelf mount. Buy them and enjoy them. You will not be disappointed.

FDA planning proposal to ban menthol cigarettes
Scott Dolan replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I smoked two packs of menthol a day before I quit. Belair. Absolute fucking lung busters. Though they made quitting easy because the reason I quit was that I’d wake up in the morning and have a difficult time drawing in a breath. -
That’s cool. As bad as I am at math, I’m just glad I was close! Hope it’s a great B-Day, brother.

It’s Only Rock & Roll was one of their best songs, but on a pretty blah album. You didn’t like Some Girls and Tattoo You? -

The mix is finally put into true stereo. Just listen to the opening track and you’ll hear all you need to know. Paul’s vocals are in the center channel instead or hardpanned to the right channels. Instruments are correctly placed across the channels. Chorus is in stereo, so on and so forth. It is actually “right” now. And because of the masterful mix, you’ll now pick out small things that you either could barely hear, or not hear at all, in the previous mix. The horns on Good Morning, Good Morning are simply sublime in true stereo. I’ll never go back to the old mix. This one is nothing short of a revelation. Seriously. -
Nope. Though I'm actually more amused than irritated.

The Sgt. Pepper remix was so astonishing that I may end up springing for this one as well. Even though it is one of my least favorite Beatles albums. -
I agree with you 100%. Let Love Rule and Mama Said were brilliant. Are You Gonna Go My Way was a huge dropoff, and it just got worse from there.

Brother, I play drums, albeit poorly. This song is 4/4 from beginning to end. As for doing everything on that song, Lenny Kravitz used to do that, at least on his first couple of albums. Including the vocal harmonies, which were really well done.

If you have trouble picking it up, right at the end of the word “cry” during the chorus start counting. That might be the easiest point to pick it out.
