  1. Congrats! Is there a story behind the name? (these things ALWAYS interest me...)
  2. Ringo as Zappa...that's pretty close to superhero anyway, isn't it?
  3. Yeah, there was. And I always make mention of it and no one gets the joke. John, Paul and George would unplug their instruments and then put them away. Then Ringo would unplug his drumset and it would deflate. I always wanted that kit...
  4. when it came out, they had it available for streaming on AOL. His version of Hotel California was the funniest thing I had heard in a L-O-N-G time. Until my Japanese student aide started singing Carpenters tunes at work...
  5. I have one of 'em. Power of Soul. I'll tell you the setting I really like him in though: Ahmad Jamal's band. He brings out some stuff in Ahmad that I really like. They make for a great team. The Lou Donaldson stuff is all just as fun as can be, and Alive is just the shit. He drives that band like a GTO. (Ronnie Foster rules on that thing too. Why didn't he ever do more stuff like that?) He killed with Rodney Jones, too. What a band this was: Rodney Jones (g), Dr. Lonnie (org), Fred Wesley (tb), Arthur Blythe (as), Idris (d), at the Boulevard Cafe (a cool lil hippie/jam band place on Chicago's west side). I shoulda recorded that one...
  6. I'm thinking they had the sammiches delivered. That album is the sound of a band full of food, booze and God only knows what else. But, dammit, it's FUN. Maybe it's the Idris thing (my other favorite drummer, besides Elvin), but this album just makes me smile. But then again, so does Alive by Grant Green, and I've never seen anyone say anything positive about that record.
  7. Dude, you have got to be kidding. Lou's bands in the mid 60's-early 70's were totally fun. It's not music for intense listening, but it's dance music, which is exactly what it was supposed to be. I can be fairly certain that Lou didn't walk into the studio and say, "hey fellas, today, I want to cut my masterpiece!" I am pretty sure he was sayin' "hey fellas, I want to make a great ass shakin' record!" And if he did say that, he totally succeeded. BTW, Idris rules.
  8. The biggest problem will be this: any problems that these kids might have are only going to be exacerbated by putting them in a juvie home instead of a psychologist's chair. These kids did something wrong, but federal charges?
  9. I think those caramel delites are samoas, because I was thinking the exact same thing. That's what they look like in the picture, anyway...
  10. Great, now I feel bad. I listen to that Mosaic set constantly. Now I find out that there's a better sounding version to be had. I simply can't afford to be a jazz fan...
  11. Yup! Also, reading/memorizing of Sugerman's book about the Doors is required during this phase. Stone's biopic, OTOH, was awful. I was still knee deep into the Doors when the movie came out on my 16th birthday. I was so stoked, and then...oh so disappointed. Ghostie's re-casting of "The End" is dead on. And hilarious.
  12. I think every adolescent caucasian male has to go through one of two phases as an early teenager: 1) A heavy metal phase: this should include, but not be limited to old Metallica, Megadeth and Iron Maiden, with copious amounts of Motorhead and Judas Priest. or 2) A Doors phase: wearing all black and thinking that Jim Morrison is deep are both key components of this phase. I actually went through both, and in the heavy metal phase, discovered both Frank Zappa and Bitches Brew. I haven't been the same since.
  13. I didn't know you were allowed to make that face and wear that jacket at the same time. I wonder if that was during the 8 minute mind bending guitar solo on I am I said.
  14. two reasons: 1) band getting ready to record CD: my non-organ group is going into the studio next week to bash out the first of two sessions. We're getting the originals and the Metallica cover done this time out, and the standards in the next session. But pouring through our book to find the stuff we want, and then arrange and re-arrange it has been eating up my time. 2) I simply feel like I don't have much to further along the conversations these days. But, I'm still lurking. If I start feeling profound again at some point, I am sure I will hop back in.
  15. Please... Herbie ain't no organ player!! Sure, he plays piano like the proverbial mofo, but organ... shit, next you're going to nominate Oscar Peterson because he played organ on a couple cuts of that Pablo record (Jousts). Lookit Man with the Golden Arm, trying to get all obscure on me. You got this? not only do I got the ten on your list, and not only do I have the Clarence Wheeler side, but (here comes the fun fact)...Clarence sent me my copy himself.
  16. Happy Birthday Mark!
  17. e-mail sent
  18. three minutes later, and I still can't stop laughing...thanks!!!
  19. Jim, my thoughts and prayers are with you. I hope everything turns out for the best.
  20. I don't have a scanner, so I can't upload it, but I can throw down this quote from the back of an air freshener that I bought... "This scent is designed for cool young dudes who aspire to RULE, to date famous actresses and supermodels and to hang out with celebrities." Best $1 I ever spent...
  21. Indeed, happy birthday, hombre!!
  22. Yeah, but if you put her in boiling water, she'll just scream...
  23. Wow! Awesome...a tea discussion. I am trying to ween myself from my soda drinking, and am hoping to find some STRONG caffeinated tea. I hear that Morning Thunder is no longer being made, and every time I go to the local health food stores I get weird looks for wanting caffeinating tea. So, any suggestions?
  24. ditto what ejp said, except I was in a church (I'm actually shocked that they didn't just use the lobby at the local high school, which is a gargantuan monstrosity of a building). the judges thing was completely annoying, as were the votes for water commission board. Even as a political junkie, I had no clue about these people. I'm not about to vote in elections where I know nothing about the candidates, so I left them blank and then caught shit for undervoting. Two things I was in shock by: 1) agreeing with ejp, that there were any republican judges to be found, especially in Humboldt Park. 2) the support for Alan Keyes in my neighborhood. This morning, I walked over there, and saw five or six Keyes for Senate signs in spanish on the walk. I never cease to be amazed.
