  1. I have lived in the Capital Region of New York, which encompasses the cities of Schenectady, Troy and Albany, since 1989. Utica, where J.R. was born and lived during his last years, is about 100 miles west of Albany (about 90-100 minutes mostly on 4 lane highway). Back then, J.R. frequently played in the Capital Region area (I saw him a few times). Walter Donnaruma was a practicing local attorney and pianist and he did play with J.R. After J.R.'s death in 1993, discs issued by "Croscrane" that I think are more CDRs rather than CDs (really thin jewel cases and the paper inserts and the face of the discs looked like that were printed off a computer) appeared for sale in a local used record/cd store. Apparently, Mr. Donnaruma had recorded some of his gigs with J.R. and reputedly had J.R.'s permission to sell the music, which I think was confirmed by a member of this board in conversation with J.R.'s widow. I listened to the discs in the stores but elected to buy these discs for which I found the sound acceptable, 5 of them, directly from Crocrane through the mail (Croscrane had some presence on the internet) The recordings that I have are from clubs in Albany, 4 are from 1980 and 1 from 1987 ("Live at the Gemini Club" and "Live on Lark Street"). I remember there being around 3-4 others and at least one was from a club in High Falls, NY, which is about halfway between Utica and Albany. Mr. Donnaruma played gigs in the area up until around 2010.
  2. Sheila Jordan performing in real time on Emmet's place (with a cold and after walking 5 flights of stairs)!!!!
  3. Sheila Jordan-93 Ted Brown-93 or 94.
  4. At the concert I was told that the show was being recorded and filmed as part of a documentary on Sheila.
  5. Heard her last night in Kingston celebrating her 93rd birthday. Harvie S on bass and Alan Broadbent on piano. Sheila moved without help from a device, e.g., cane, or a person. Concert was about 80 minutes. She left the stage for 10 minutes to sit on a couch while Alan and Harvie did their thing. Sheila stood while she sang and when she did not, she saw on a chair. Pretty impressive. Still had some vocal range and man she could still phrase and scat.

  15. Regarding the Buddy DeFranco "Odalisque" date-I understand that only the 4 tunes on the B side of the LP are with Sonny Clark. These were recorded during the "Jazz Tones" session. The A side of the Odalisque LP is a Big Band. Those 4 tunes were included in a Fresh Sounds 2 cd set that compiled the Buddy DeFranco with Sonny Clark quartet cuts. Therefore, this Fresh Sound set did not include 4 quintet tunes from "Sweet and Lovely" and all of Cooking the Books.
  16. Thanks for catching the typo

  21. Saw The Cookers this past Saturday at The Falcon in Marlboro. Showed signs of lack of playing together-the unison reed and brass playing was not a little off-not so the rhythm. The solos were great. 3 players at least 80 years old.
  22. I run across Mark at concerts in the area. A very nice man indeed and full of wonderful stories.

  24. Last night on Facebook on one group, it was reported that Sonny died. Under "John Coltrane memorial project" on youtube, yesterday an individual has posted a tribute to Sonny while referring to his passing. A French jazz blog appears to confirm Sonny's death: http://jazzaparis.canalblog.com. No details provided.
