  1. I received an email from Jazz Messengers about a previously unissued Hank Jones cd that it indicates was issued by the Italian Red Records label. WTF?-I thought this label was effectively dead. Then on the Jazz Messengers website I found 106 items (cds and lps) attributed to Red Records . These included cd listings for Ethnic Heritage Ensemble's "Impressions" and Sam Rivers' "The Quest", which were never previously issued on cd. And, there was a Cedar Walton's "More Blues for Myself", which is apparently comprised entirely of alternate takes from the original recording. Plus, there was a "Complete Evening with Joe Henderson" cd that has 3 previously unissued tracks (not alternates). If you are into Chet Baker, there is an apparently previously unissued concert that is now issued, so far, only on vinyl. I found no articles online (or on Jazz Messengers) that this Red Records had been revived but I did find that Red Records on its website, redrecords.it, (now available for reading in English) indicates that a Marco Pennisi bought it in 2021. Apparently, these cds on Jazz Messengers are legitimate. Interestingly, discogs (under "Red Record" or "Red Records") does not include information about new issues. Just wanted to share. Could not find that there had been a previous, recent discussion of a revived Red Records.

    Sam Noto

February 2022 La Gazzetta Italiana: https://www.lagazzettaitaliana.com/people/9907-buffalo-s-sam-noto-a-world-class-jazz-trumpet-virtuoso Born in Buffalo and apparently lives in Canada across the Niagara River from Buffalo.
  3. at least one of the concerts at the Van Dyck and one of those at Holy Names where ones I attended. He played with Joe Venuti at the Van Dyck (not one of the recorded concerts) the evening after recording his album with Joe for Chiarorscuro.
  4. Just came across this site: https://www.davemckennapiano.com click on "listen"-see list of free concerts you can listen to.
  5. you would find this out quickly enough: The "1963 In Japan : Thelonious Monk Quartet - TBS, TV Broadcast, Tokyo, Japan, May 23, 1963 - Eastwind (E)EWCD702 [CD]" is available as a cd on that Fourstar budget label The Great Canadian Concert Of The Thelonious Monk Quartet - Live "Place des Arts, Grande Salle", Montreal, Canada, August 21, 1965 - CBC (Can)RM141 is readily available on -Hi- Hat, that highly "legitimate" label, and is known as something like "the Montreal Concert". The American Jazz Classics cd "Thelonious Monk Plays Duke Ellington" includes not only the Berlin concert but also the Riverside album of the same name and a tune or two with the Duke Ellington orchestra without Monk (?) from a date that I cannot remember.
  6. I was in Paris last October and visited Paris Jazz Corner shopping for cds, not vinyl. Great store. Was there for 2 hours and could have spent more. The store is steps away from Arenes de Lutece, one of the few remaining Roman ruins in Paris.
  7. Available to view on PBS website apparently until 11-18 https://www.pbs.org/video/ron-carter-finding-the-right-notes-p8s8vx/
  8. Finished the book. To be clear, while the search for a specific fictionalized iconic record is central to the book, this is also a detective or mystery book. There are murders that occur as a result of the search and the main character solves them. The vinyl search is London and England centric but I found it easy to relate to the author's depiction of charity shops and bramble sales. Whether because the author is a vinyl collector himself or had great advisors, he accurately (to me) portrays the hunt for a specific collectable along with the arcane music and vinyl knowledge of the active collector. There is also seemingly knowledgeable presentation of audio equipment and vinyl cleaning equipment.
  9. half way through this book, which is the first in a current 5 book series: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/26109016-written-in-dead-wax Hilarious. guy knows his jazz records and record collecting. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Cartmel
  10. Just got back from a 47 day trip to the Faroe Islands and Iceland
  11. yup missed that. wrong search terms
  12. Have been out of the county for nearly seven weeks. catching up on new releases and was reading dusty groove. Saw announcement for this previously unreleased Tapscott album recorded for Flying Dutchman. Doesn't seem to be any discussion as yet: https://mrbongo.bandcamp.com/album/the-quintet
  13. If you have a Prime membership than you should be able to watch Prime streaming for free. I know I did. See: https://people.com/tv/prime-video-subscription-benefits/. There is also Amazon Freevee (?), which used to be the IMDb channel and stuff there is shown with ads. I can access this through my Prime app. The new Bosch show, Bosch Legacy is shown on Freevee (?).
  14. Bosch in the original show mentioned Frank Morgan more than once. Pepper was also popular. As was already mentioned this is consistent with the books. In the original shows There was one scene where Bosch went to the evidence room, I think, the cop in the room was playing jazz and Bosch exhibiting his knowledge mentioned that Jack Teagarden was about to play a solo.
  15. https://sluchaj.bandcamp.com/album/respiration Does not appear to be on YouTube.
  16. Harbour: "Still pissed that those two recent Tapscott things were vinyl only." IF you refer in part to the Tapscott Michael Session Avignon 1989 date offered on Bandcamp, that session was made available as a cd in Japan in early 2021.
  17. Lat night, Wayne Horvitz and Sara Schoenbeck at The Avalon Lounge in Catskill performed tunes from their 2020 release on Songlines. They are on a small tour. In addition, Mat Maneri and Bobby Previte did a 30 minute improv.
  18. If we are talking cds rather than lps, at $21.97 Importcds.com seems to have the lowest price. Including shipping and handling and tax, my total cost was $26.96. Importcds still had copies of the Gil Evans when I ordered earlier this morning. However, it indicated the Tyner/Hubbard was on back order. Importcds priced both issues the same. Amazon.com appears to have both. It lists the Tyner/Hubbard at, $26.99 + tax. As for the Gil Evans, amazon currently wants $29.99 + tax. At a total cost of $32.38, I saved a $5+ with importcds.
  19. When I was 12 I liberated Kind of Blue from my brother's lp collection. Had no idea what jazz was but knew I like that lp. Skip forward 6 years and I picked up my second jazz album-"Memphis Underground". still had no concept as to what jazz was-just liked the music.
  20. directed by Sonny Clark's great nephew https://www.newyorker.com/culture/culture-desk/one-of-the-greatest-movies-about-jazz
  21. He is appearing today at the Real Art Ways in Hartford, CT with Joe Morris, Patricia Brennan and Stephen Haynes. I plan on being there. should be a good show.
  22. I remember in some early post on FB, either Feldman spoke of or a third party describing Feldman's efforts described his finding or discovering Just Coolin as if the music had been lost. It was pointed on in a reply that the music was clearly known because it was listed in Blue Note discographies.
  23. Hesseman, probably as part of The Committee, appeared in the first Billy Jack movie. There are two clips on youtube.com
