  1. Amazon.uk now making the upcoming 4 box sets available for preorder. I did a comparison between amazon.uk and amazon.fr and found virtually no difference in net cost shipped to me in the U.S. Amazon.de is considerably more expensive. On a different matter, there are Ebay auctions for individual cds by the various artists whose Black Saint recordings have now been issued by camjazz in boxes and which auctions have not recevied bids even at starting prices of #10.00.
  2. Thanks for offering but, no, I stick with the Mosaic gift card.

  4. I had a pretty good seven days. Last Tuesday I and some friends drove from Albany NY over to Amherst Ma to catch Amir ElSaffar's Two River ensemble. Trumpet/sax/bass/drums with two ouds (at times one tabla). Very Cool. One night later, I caught Fred Ho and Salim Washington at the Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy NY. Each musician did a solo bit that involved spoken word. Then they improvised a sax duo piece. Loved it. Along with his skill, Fred displays great humor in his work. Showed a music video set to his arrangment of In-a-godda-de-vida. This appears on one of his latest releases and is hilarious. Salim has a wonderful sound to his tenor. Also he is very well spoken Finally, this past Saturday, a friend co produced a concert at his wife's bookstore. The musicians were Bob Devos on guitar and Hendrik Meurkens on harmonica and vibes. Always special to hear jazz harmonica.
  5. I received the mosaic select john carter/bobby bradford. great music!!!

  7. weston is doing a solo set in amherst, ma next thursday the 18th. Hope to go then. I saw earlier in the year in pittsfield in a duo with blake.
  8. I have not been able to figure out if the more recent Reinhardt box set, The Postwar Recordings 1944-1953, has any overlap with previous sets JSP issued. does anybody know?
  9. I ordered it on the 30th within a couple hours of the original post. got an email from amazon yesterday indicating that my order had been canceled.
  10. Saw the SF Jazz Collective last friday night. Robin Eubanks and Avisha Cohen has been replaced by Louis Bonilla and a young trumpeter who won the 09 monk competition. It was a homecoming (albany, ny) for stefon harris. Their latest thing is playing the compositions of Horace Silver. Unfortunately, imho, that night they sucked the like out of his music.
  11. If you live in the us,ordering from amazon.uk rather than harmonia will cost you less. the amazon prices in the uk have a vat price built into. When you go through the ordering process you can see that the price is reduced once you plugged in your u.s. shipping address.

  15. So I made it down for the Thursday concerts with a few friends. Starting at 7 PM, Muhal Richard Abrams performed solo for approx. 50 minutes seemingly nonstop. That is, not allowing for what seemed to be intended use of space/silence. Not familiar enough with his music to identify the tune-For all I know it was simply free improvisation-and it was great. The second act was to be fred anderson with chad taylor. That obviously did not go off. Instead they had 10 minutes of silence for fred and moved on. The Lifetime Trio went next, joseph jarman, rob garcia on drums and johh ehlis on guitar. Jarman wove in comments about both Fred and Muhal. Also sang two songs. Ehlis was a suprise. He seemed to be able to play any style. At one point I dozed off (did I explain that I drove 3 hours to get there and that I usually go to sleep around 8-9 PM?) when I woke up a very tall distinguished looking older man was playing tenor. Shit I thought it looked like John Tchicai. And it was him!!!!!!!! Very Cool despite the lack of a/c and the temp inside being around 85 degrees. The whole set was under an hour. The final act came on-Abrams with Harrison Bankhead on bass and Ari Brown on sax. Again seemed to be doing free inprov for an hour. Great stuff. And except for the emotions with Fred's passing, a great evening. Drove home, got 4 hours of sleep and went to work with a smile on my face. For somebody approaching 60 not bad.
  16. I have spoken with a "Fred" at Mosaic off and on for quite a while.
  17. It should be noted that the carter/bradford box set includes "Seeking" which has been available on the various Hat labels for a while. I have that disc but still intend on getting the set.
  18. I am planning to go with some friends for the concerts on the 24th including the ones for muhal richard abrams. would be my first time hearing him in concert.
  19. Drove over to Pittsfield, Ma last night to see Randy Weston appear with Alex Blake on bass. He was being honored by berkshiresjazz.org for his contributions to the berkshire 50 years ago and to jazz since. Got his break working at the Music Inn where he was hired to wash dishes. My first time seeing Weston. He is very articulate and speaks and appears like a man 20 years younger than his 84 years. Played two sets both shy of one hour. Some of the tunes you could expect, Little Niles and Berskhire Blues. Also performed The Healer, African Sunrise and African cookbook amongst others. Blake was interesting. He sits while playing the bass. And he plays it almost like a guitar at time with considerable use of strumming and slapping with this right hand. Good time
  20. just sharing this information: "MATTHEW SHIPP TRIO @ ARTS CENTER OF CAPITAL REGION - 4/1 At 7:00pm on Thursday, April 1, the celebrated NYC-based Matthew Shipp Trio (featuring Matthew Shipp, piano; Michael Bisio, bass; Whit Dickey, drums) will perform live at the opening of a new gallery show at The Arts Center of the Capital Region, 265 River Street in downtown Troy NY. The exhibition, which features locally-produced videos and still photos of internationally-known musicians by albanyjazz.com contributor Andrzej Pilarczyk and others, is called "Freedom Through Collective Improvisation: iEAR Presents! Free Jazz from the Sanctuary" and runs from April 1 through April 30. There will be an opening reception with light refreshments at 6 PM on April 1, and a closing reception during Troy Night Out on April 30. After moving to New York City in the mid-1980s, pianist Matthew Shipp quickly became one of the leading lights on the jazz scene. He was a sideman in the David S. Ware Quartet and also for Roscoe Mitchell’s Note Factory before making the decision to concentrate on his own music. He has recorded many albums but his most enduring relationships have been with two labels, Hatology and Thirsty Ear." And here is information about the "free jazz from the sanctuary" series: "Free Jazz from the Sanctuary: Freedom Through Collective Improvisation Join us at The Arts Center of the Capital Region in Troy on April 1 as we celebrate the opening of a month-long gallery show featuring photos and videos from this series! Light refreshments at 6 PM, live music from the Matthew Shipp Trio (piano, with Michael Bisio on bass and Whit Dickey on drums) at 7 PM. Click here for more information. This 13-part series of jazz performance videos features some of the world's most talented improvisers performing a wide spectrum of music in the genre broadly known as free jazz. These uncompromising and inventive musicians create new languages and expressive forms, with an aesthetic and conceptual edge that challenges listeners to look at the world anew. Like freedom itself, free jazz as a term defies definition. The name most likely comes from Ornette Coleman's 1961 album Free Jazz: A Collective Improvisation. This music celebrates the individual voice and collective action—and, like anyone exploring the limits of freedom, the musicians who play it sometimes find themselves on the edge of what is commercially, culturally and politically acceptable. But they endure… and their quest continues! These concerts were recorded live between 2007-2009 at The Sanctuary for Independent Media, a historic former church in North Troy. Each show is available on DVD directly from Downtown Music Gallery or online here—just click the links below: The featured musicians are: ■Amiri Baraka and Rob Brown ■The Thirteenth Assembly (Taylor Ho Bynum, Tomas Fujiwara, Mary Halvorson, Jessica Pavone) ■Ethnic Heritage Ensemble (Kahil El'Zabar, Ernest Dawkins, Corey Wilkes) ■Fay Victor Ensemble (Ken Filiano, Anders Nilsson, Michael TA Thompson, Fay Victor) ■Splatto Festival Chorus (Dave Barrett, Michael Bisio, Ed Mann, Todd Reynolds) ■Weasel Walter Trio (Peter Evans, Mary Halvorson, Weasel Walter) ■Trio Tarana (Sam Bardfeld, Ravish Momin, Brian Prunka) ■The Ras Ensemble (Clif Jackson, Dave Miller, Ras Moshe, Tor Yochai Snyder) ■Michael Vlatkovich Quartet (Christopher Garcia, Jonathan Golove, David Mott, Michael Vlatkovich) ■William Hooker ■Empty Cage Quartet (Ivan Johnson, Paul Kikuchi, Jason Mears, Kris Tiner) ■From Between Trio (Michel Doneda, Tatsuya Nakatani, Jack Wright) ■Sax Soup Poetry and Voice (Joe Giardullo, Pierre Joris, Nicole Peyrafitte) This series is a co-production of NY Media Alliance and the Department of the Arts at Rensselaer. The purpose: to create a cutting-edge, professional artistic media project to further a love and understanding for this brilliant, rarely heard music. NY Media Alliance, a 30 year-old non-profit advocate for the media arts, operates The Sanctuary for Independent Media. It’s a place where politically engaged interdisciplinary artists experiment with aesthetic form and challenging content. In this sanctuary, the overarching goal is to shed light on media arts’ vital role in the process of building a democratic society. The Department of the Arts at Rensselaer is generally considered to be the first integrated electronic arts program within a research university in the U.S., dealing with innovative aesthetic, cultural, and technical explorations of experimental media and electronic arts. Free Jazz from the Sanctuary was made possible in part with support from the New York State Council on the Arts Presenting Program and the NYS Music Fund, established by the New York State Attorney General at Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors when investigations into the practice of “payola” or “pay for play” by major recording and broadcasting companies were resolved. These settlements stipulated that funds paid by the music businesses should benefit the residents of New York State through music education and appreciation programs. The Free Jazz from the Sanctuary series is available for worldwide non-commercial broadcast distribution. Contact us for more information!
