  1. If you want to see something REALLY REALLY REALLY RARE... First copy i see on Ebay. En route to the Yen kingdom, of course (crisis ? what crisis ?)
  2. Mobley sunglasses, too ! the hippest of the hippest !!
  3. Really 40 $ ? Even eight years ago, it is was a good deal. I 've always heard that this one was highly collectable among Euro jazz fans. I remember that Paris Jazz Corner had this one for sale on one of their auction. Don't know how high it went up...
  4. For the same reason that the ONLY Blue Note worlwide famous artist is Norah Jones (not because she is Ravi Shankar's daughter)
  5. This one is unusual, too http://www.irma.asso.fr/spip.php?action=dw2_out&id=3166
  6. Thank you for sharing with us. Too many Liberty version of the classic Wolff / Miles Blue Note... same old problem. Is any jazz cover book complete without this one ?
  7. You mean this one ?
  8. Right ; You can hear it especially on "Lou takes Off", which is known to be the noisiest off all RVG's recordings.
  9. Oh ! I do that very often. Fascinating experience. In fact, i only use my TV this way.
  10. I think Kevin means the early ones from the 90's, using the original blue Note album numbers (TOCJ-4219 etc). I have the same experience, comparing a few CD versions with the Music Matters LPs. The TOCJs sound closest to the LPs. Claude - Dare you to say that over on the SH forums! For sure ! Ayatollah Hoffmann will not be happy. beware of the Fatwa !!
  11. That is the problem with this reissue policy, and the agressive marketing of Steve "mr know it all" Hoffman and his distinguished colleagues. They will always tell you that this one is better than previous, ths state of the art, etc... buying every kind of reissue will eventually make you spend the equivalent of the price of the original.
  12. ...didn't know that...interesting! Unusual.. .or usual ? Al Lion's wife too was model for Reid Miles cover on Blue Note ( 3 sounds, Moods)
  13. "Jazz seen" is no longer available, i think it's out of print. Check the second hand book shops. But "jazz life" (including the 1500 $ edition !) is available on Amazon.com
  14. Wynton Kelly Piano, Riverside 12-254 original large blue label DG, mono. Possibly the greatest Wynton session, with Kenny Burrell . Yesterday : Jimmy Heath The Thumper, Riverside12-314, original DG small label, mono. Not exactly my favourite Heath session... Johnny Pate Subtle Sounds, Gig GLP 100, black label DG (original ? ) with Ronnell Bright on piano !!
  15. His "Jazz Seen" book on Taschen is one of my all time favourites. I browse it one or two times a week. Ah !! those glorious 50's and 60's on the west coast... Art and Chet at home...And Mobley in a NYC street...And this Robert Conti picture, too... the guitar, the girl, the car... A real mobster guitar hero ! ! Thanks, Mr Claxton for sharing it with us.
  16. "Happy Frame of Mind" was released later.
  17. A not so great find. As a collector even the cover in itself will satisfy me...the record will fill it, till i find a better copy, really collectable.
  18. Yusef Lateef "At Cranbrook" Argo 634 Black DG original. No split pack cover... Found this one in fine condition, but with a broken edge... First two or three minutes are not audible...
  19. John Hiatt "bring the family" A&M, 1987. With Ry Cooder....
  20. Larry Young "INTO SOMETHING" BLP 4187 ,mono original rvg. Eric Dolphy "CONVERSATIONS" FM records, stereo original FM 308 s
  21. Well, the quality pressing of the late New Jazz is very bad, right. But the quality pressing of the late Riversides is questionable, too...that does not make Riverside a budget label. I don't think René Thomas was a hot seller... But Dick Morgan, Roosevelt Wardell, Paul Serrano were not, and are on Riverside, along with Monk and Bill. It is possible that Jazzland was devoted to lesser hot sellers, but it is not clear.
  22. But Jazzland or New Jazz were NOT budget labels like Crown etc... it is true that Jazzland and New Jazz reissued some old Riverside and Prestige titles, but it was not on a budget kind of records : those reissues were good quality.
  23. Artistic purposes ? Hard to tell that Jazzland or New Jazz had a different artistic policy from Riverside or Prestige... Financial commercial purposes....? Don't know... Every knowledgeable contributor is welcomed....
  24. All those Swing album were pressed in very limited runs (no more than 200 - 500 ex), that make them rare in any condition. Anyway this one has obviously a trashed cover... and those oxxbridge gallery ebay prices are definitely absurd.
