Why no Horace Silver Blue Note box?
gmonahan replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
That's my favorite Silver album. I've always figured Mosaic didn't do one because most of them are easy to get and have remained in print and because there are a LOT of them. -

I've had this one sitting on my shelf longer than I've had shelves, and I know I've read "in" it, maybe through it, though if so, longer ago than I can remember, so I've decided to read it through...again?! I find myself wishing I had the original 1955 edition with the discography that they decided to omit from the later editions. It would presumably have been mostly 78s.

Who are the soloists on that one? Would have been cool to hear her do one chorus of "Groovin' High"!

I like the live Tokyo date from Mainstream. Picked that one up in a Jazz Heritage edition. For some weird reason, Jazz Heritage reissued a bunch of Maintream jazz things from that period. I also prefer later Sarah, especially the Ellington song books on Pablo.

Very cool. Love me some Tubby Hayes!

They continued to be friends. Laine appeared on Nat's short-lived TV show to support him. Thanks to TTK for the explanation on that label. I had no idea!

Nice record, but what's the story with the super old-style Columbia label on that 78?!

Lu Watters and Turk Murphy were fairly serious white players in the revival--so serious the music can sometimes sound like it was collected for a museum--but Good Time Jazz preserved most of their work, and Watters even got a fairly nice box.

Return Of The Film Corner Thread
gmonahan replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Went to see "One Life" with Anthony Hopkins. It's a weeper, but well made, I thought. -
In Phil Schaap's supplemental notes to the cd release, Mulligan said he liked this one the best of his "meets" albums for Granz. They do appear to be enjoying the date.

That's about the right age. I have to feel like I'm 3 or 6 to like them......which I do on rare occasions!!

I have to be in the (very!) right mood, but I've been known occasionally to listen to the FF+2! I recently got this one, mostly for Rosolino, but I like Bob Burgess's trombone on it too. And the sound is good.

Now listed as running low/last chance.

Happy birthday, Mr. Shatner! While I am a hopelessly committed Trekker, I still think his best work was with James Spader on "Boston Legal"!
