  1. Barrett is new to me. What album to you recommend?!
  2. Went to see "The Friend." If you like "pet helps you get in touch with your life" movies, this one is for you. I thought it was sweet, nicely acted, especially by the dog, but hardly an oscar contender.
  3. Oh, so am I. A hopeless completist, but then, I used to play the instrument, and I can still remember listening in utter awe to Big T's version of "St. James Infirmary" in the Armstrong Town Hall Concert. I tried doing the waterglass thing and quickly realized that I'd have to reinvent the instrument completely--change all the positions--to play it. I just shook my head and decided to let *him* do it!
  4. lf memory serves, this was Jack's last studio album, wasn't it? It was somehow acquired and reissued on cd by the family on the briefly revived "Teagarden Presents" label back in 2005 with "Dame Blanche" listed as a "special bonus track" and an uninteresting generic cover. I like the original Verve cover a lot better!
  5. Nice piece in the New York Times on Billie Holiday consisting of a series of short essays focusing on specific recordings accompanied by links: https://www.nytimes.com/2025/04/02/arts/music/billie-holiday-jazz-music.html
  6. Finally got around to this one. Interesting Bird. Not essential (well, unless, like me, you think ALL Bird is essential!)
  7. I liked Conclave, but I didn't think it was best picture material.
  8. I agree about "Anora." I thought several nominees were better. I just saw "I'm Still Here," which did win the best foreign film award, but it was far better than "Anora." Still waiting to see "The Brutalist."
  9. Vanguard set, disc 3. Nice Hawk on the Thompson session.
  10. As I read over this thread, I didn't see any mention of the two reissues from 1999. Four of the tracks from "Mel Powell Bandstand" were reissued on the first one ("The Best Things in Life") and one more on the second ("It's Been So Long"). Presumably, the vocal tracks Mike mentions above were the ones that got left out.
  11. Both great, but that Teagarden album is to die for.
  12. I agree it is a bit overlong. I go back and forth on the music. A lot of important things are communicated in the lyrics, and that sort of reinforces the artificiality of their existence. Certainly an interesting movie. I saw "The Order" last night and thought it was very good, especially Jude Law's performance as a slightly burnt out FBI agent.
  13. Absolutely essential, IMHO.
  14. I love the Anecdotes book. It has a quote from Zoot Sims about what it was like playing in Russia with Goodman. Zoot said, "Every gig with Benny is like playing in Russia." I know BG had his fans, but both Crow and Phil Woods were somewhat less than complimentary!
  15. Me three! I only just returned from a long overseas trip to find the box waiting for me. I've always liked Mosaic's remastering, but I have to say they've outdone themselves with this one. The sound is really wonderful!
  16. Yes, I've read accounts of his...er...eccentricity?! He was apparently a dreadful husband. We've talked here many times about artistic geniuses who turn out to be pretty lousy human beings. All that said, "Dr. Strangelove" is a masterpiece, and Sellers is fabulous in it!
  17. Saw "Conclave" last night. A bit slow, but a fine performance by Ralph Fiennes.
  18. He came late to the "age" of sincere standards singing, but he made a really fine career out of it. I like those Kapp records. RIP.
  19. He really did have a lovely voice.
  20. Ah, Rose Discount Records on S. Wabash. Be still my heart......
  21. Oddly, or maybe not so oddly? this album isn't in Lord's discography. I was curious who played trombone on the instrumentals. It doesn't sound like Dick Shearer, but I guess it could be. On a somewhat different note, I'm still exploring the later recordings of this guy
