  1. Although it doesn't appear this had anything to do with the crash, I find this statement odd. Are there any pilots who can confirm this fact? When I was involved in producing aviation English course materials, I wrote a question along the lines of a pilot of a private one-engine plane giving a mayday call for an engine failure asking for a vector to the nearest airport and one of our expert consultants, a pilot, basically said that if you're in a single engine plane and it fails, you fall out of the sky and can forget trying to reach an airport. engine failure - > no airspeed -> no lift - > plane stalls maybe you're thinking of a helicopter? That wouldn't make sense either. http://www.cybercom.net/~copters/pilot/autorotation.html

This conclusion is wrong. You can't win the world gliding championships in a Cessna Skyhawk but it won't fall out of the sky just because the engine goes out. By the way, Boeing 747s, 767s, etc. can glide too: http://www.askcaptainlim.com/questionsviaemail.htm
  3. But the name might be worth it. Look at the number of page visits per day. I don't think google cares much for YouTube's video content at this point.

  5. Are you talking about the CBS "Havana Jam I + II" stuff or the actual (rumored) live recording(s)? Attached snippet: May '79 Rolling Stone Mag.

  21. I listened to the Ali/Kaukonen/Pastorius tape recently; that's My Fathers Place/Long Island '85 if I remember correctly. Search this site for Kaukonen: http://members.aol.com/lpogost/jaco.htm
  22. Re #4 -> you think you can fool me?! Hehe, I knew you would include a track from this disc! Hello Dieter!
  23. Hello Michael! Thanks for sending me the discs. I just returned from vacation and gave disc #1 a listen while trashing dehydrate plants. #5: The tune is Jaco Pastorius's 'Liberty City' but I don't know whose interpretation it is. Sounds O.K. but too disciplined for me. #10: Cover of a 'Sextant' tune (Hancock's 'Sextant')? Probably not but the bass clarinet line sounds Maupinish. #12: A bass guitar player who appreciates some fret noise. Early 80ies Gerald Veasley and Tacuma could probably sound similar. But this guy throws in harmonics also and I've never heard Veasley or Tacuma play harmonics. Probably a younger player with many influences; no matter who he or she is, I don't like the bass playing on that tune (sounds familiar but my tune-name memory is lost forever -> except for Pastorius tunes/see above). More later this week, back to the plants... Dankeschön!
  24. Thanks to mikeweil and mr. bassman for the very enjoyable meeting. The poor guys had to stay up late on two consecutive nights - their endurance is impressive (their patience, too)! The music was great in spite of - according to the band leader - not being well rehearsed. I'm looking forward to attending this band's next concerts. ubu, I hope you can make it to Basel this weekend. P.S. mikeweil can speak Viennese slang. A Wahnsinn.
