NFL playoff games today
chris replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I wasn't into the Indy/KC game myself... it's great to have some offensive production, but NO defense get a little boring. Still, I don't think there is any question that Tony Dungy is a great coach, particularly now that he is away from a team of whiners like Warren Sapp. At this moment I'm trying to avoid watching Green Bay so that I don't jinx them, but whoever claimed the "easy" win for the Eagles must not have been watching Green Bay play the last few games! Still, I never count the Eagles out. My adopted team is the Seahawks, though, like many Alaskans. Very sad state of affairs... -

I think Jackie Brown is really underrated-- and Reservoir Dogs is great. But I don't need to see Tarantino himself someone mentioned Emily Watson-- if you can find it, check out the film "Trixie". This is by no means a great movie, but Watson is good in it as a malaprop-ridden private eye and it definitely feels like an Alan Rudolph film (take that as you will)! re: Criterion DVDs. They are a bit more expensive and I don't always spring for them (generally I just want the movie), but some of their releases are stellar, such as most of the Kurosawa, The 400 Blows, Andrei Rublev ... but Robocop?

The original question (implied) was whether on a COMPUTER burner, not a component burner, they might have better luck with "Music" CD-Rs-- my response was to point out that in terms of media and non-component burners, there is no difference in the media except where it is made and how high the quality is. It's not that complicated: On a computer CD Burner, or a standalone that is not a component drive but uses a computer CD burner on the inside, you can use either media, but you are wasting money using the "music" blanks (although, by coincidence, some of them are higher quality just as some regular CD-R media is better than others). I recommended some good brands, as have others. There IS a difference in media. On a component system you need a "music" CD-R. Period.

When I am making coffee (or especially tea), I care more about the water than when I am just drinking the water straight! -

Martz should have gambled, but if football were poker, gambling with Bulger is like trying to bluff with only a mid-level pair. Not that Warner is the answer. But I have to agree that not playing Faulk more was a travesty... -

I've been watching and following football for 20 years-- just because I find the style the Pats play boring is no reason to assume otherwise. It's like basketball-- who plays the most refined, cleanest, most fundamental game? College women. Am I going to choose them over college men, NBA or even WNBA? Not a chance. I'd rather watch Green Bay with its flashes of brilliance, or St. Louis going crazy on offense, or a firebrand like Vick trying to win a game by himself than the same exact game every single day. Pats play fundamental, BORING football. Sorry to break it to you so gently -
Classic and Modern Computer & Arcade Games
chris replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Never been a big gamer, though we had an Atari 2600 and then I had a succession of computers: Vic 20, TI-99/4A, Commodore 64, Apple II, Gigantic PC Jr., etc... nowadays I play online card games and pool with family occasionally, FIFA Soccer on the PS2 with my kids-- but I too spend the rest of my time here and in various discussion forums... I think discussion boards *are* the videogames (or more accurately the text adventures) for a particular segment of computer users But I sure do miss the old days of computing when things (in general) were a lot more fun! -
I have a few albums, but the one that comes to mind is "Cornet Chop Suey" -- Concord. He was a cantankerous old bastard, though, wasn't he? Interviews with him were hilarious...

The movie "Bird" and the controversy about it got me interested, though I'd heard a variety of jazz before. My first intense listening was "Giant Steps" and "Kind of Blue" -- can't get much more cliched than that!

"Music" CD-Rs are those for which a licensing fee has been paid... other than that, there is really no difference EXCEPT that there are definitely differences between brands of CD-R media-- some are better than other, some are more reliable, some won't handle high-speed burning as well and will result in more coasters, etc. My preference is Ty-Yuden and Mitsui or Kodak Gold -- lots of bad luck with Verbatim, Maxell, etc. When in doubt, Japanese made = good, taiwanese made = bad.

As long as it is cold, I'm not picky. So bottled water right from the cooler or a bottle of tap water nice and cold is good enough for me... -

BOTH my teams lost today. Let's hope the other games go a little better. Hate to see the Pats, the most boring football team on the planet, win it all... snoooooooze-fest -
I saw some CDs for sale that are listed as Blue Note releases but also "Spanish Time Life Edition" -- anything special/different/bad about these? What are they?

AOW 09/21-09/27 is Wilbur Harden & John Coltrane
chris replied to Dmitry's topic in Album Of The Week
I'm resurrecting this thread because I just received this set as a gift. I'd never heard of it before, nor had I heard Harden (to my knowledge). An intriguing story that adds another dimension to some fine, fine music. Guess I have to add another obsession to my growing list and search out that "The King and I" album! -
That's what makes this board great! A lot of passion, people unafraid to express it, but very little bickering/anger over differences in these areas... (instead, just a deep sense of pity

National Spelling Bee
chris replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I wouldn't be se quick to generalize. Just as every successful young athlete is not hounded mercilessly by soccer mom and dad, every speller is not driven like those that are picked out to be highlighted in documentaries. There is certainly that segment of parents, though, alive and well in every aspect of youth activities. What's scary is that there is some small amount of leeway in my understanding when you reach the rare level of national competition and want to compete... but I see parents riding their children and trying to live vicariously in recreational sports and activities like cub scouts! It would be funny as a sitcom, it can be heartbreaking to see it in real life. There is a fine line between teaching healthy competition, motivation, and discipline and becoming a fanatic about it that seems all but indiscernible to some folks. -
I'm heading even further north! First to Kotzebue to visit family, then to Nome to visit more family. I figure it will be good to take the kids somewhere completely off the road system so I have something to use as a threat when they start complaining about how small and cold Fairbanks is Out of the frying pan, into the fire.

There must be two labels of the same name. The one that caught my eye was Monk's Music -- but I see now that this isn't the Riverside "Monk's Music" but some compilation. However, it doesn't appear on the Past Perfect web site at all. They have another Monk album called Nutty which also doesn't appear on that web site. Unfortunately, no track listings or discographical information are provided-- but is Monk in the public domain even under European Law?

Sorry, but I still think those strings are sickly sweet-- and there are various tracks with strings that are not. I respect your ears and you really put together a fine set of discs that covered a wide range of material... but don't fall into the rhetorical trap that elides all taste from the equation. You may be right that being an even more sophisticated listener would reveal something that made me like that track. On the other hand, it is just as likely that even then it just wouldn't be to my taste I see this happen in poetry criticism all the time (I am guilty of it pretty regularly)-- defending something by taking the position that if the other person really understood it on a higher level, their objection would be overcome. Unfortunately, as much as I would like to think that disagreement is just a matter of others living up to my standards, even at a "high level" there is much room for continued opposition. Incidentally, I AM going to give that AEC track another listen using your "script"- but I am still not holding out a lot of hope for it

Really? That's cool.. what kind of roaster do you use? I'd heard that I'd smoke myself out of my apartment-- but if that's not the case, it might be time to get myself a Christmas present...

The ending of that Saints game belongs in the wacky thread!

National Spelling Bee
chris replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Pretty cool. If you haven't seen it, you should try to get your eyes on the documentary Spellbound which is quite moving. My daughter has been within two places of going to the national bee TWICE. Not that she'd have a chance at that level, but it would have been fun to go... -
I always find something interesting on every Outkast album I have heard. I recommend them. I also second recommendations for A Tribe Called Quests and the Roots... Someone on Organissimo had a pretty funny quote about the difference/non-difference between hip-hop and rap but I can't recall it now...
