  1. Alas, not yet. I'm hopeful that we will be streaming, and/or Podcasting our local music programs sometime soon. (It was actually the fact that we're not streaming that gave me the thought that I should post my playlist on the internet).

    Pearl Jam

It Still Moves is a good record, if a little too long. I haven't heard the new MMJ but it's come highly recommended. I hear lots of Neil Young in MMJ.

    Pearl Jam

My hero Robert Pollard is opening for PJ later in June. From Pitchfork: "Pearl Jam continues its longstanding tradition of inviting bands much, much cooler than they are to tour with them, as it was announced today that the second leg of PJ's summer tour will feature not only Sonic Youth, but Robert Pollard, filling opening duties. Onward, to the MGM Grand Arena! As previously reported, My Morning Jacket will join Eddie Vedder and his crew for the first part of their stadium-oriented U.S. stint. Then, Pollard will fill in for a couple shows, followed by, yes, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, for four performances. (No, Tom Petty is not opening for Pearl Jam; they seem to be co-headlining.) Sonic Youth will bring things to a close with a seven-show run. Pearl Jam dates: 04-20 London, England - The Astoria 05-09 Toronto, Ontario - Air Canada Centre * 05-10 Toronto, Ontario - Air Canada Centre * 05-12 Albany, NY - Pepsi Arena * 05-13 Hartford, CT - New England Dodge Music Arena * 05-16 Chicago, IL - United Center * 05-17 Chicago, IL - United Center * 05-19 Grand Rapids, MI - Van Andel Arena * 05-20 Cleveland, OH - Quicken Loans Arena * 05-22 Detroit, MI - Palace of Auburn Hills * 05-24 Boston, MA - TD Banknorth Garden * 05-25 Boston, MA - TD Banknorth Garden * 05-27 Camden, NJ - Tweeter Center at the Waterfront * 05-28 Camden, NJ - Tweeter Center at the Waterfront * 05-30 Washington, DC - Verizon Center * 06-01 East Rutherford, NJ - Continental Airlines Arena * 06-03 East Rutherford, NJ - Continental Airlines Arena * 06-23 Pittsburgh, PA - Mellon Arena # 06-24 Cincinnati, OH - US Bank Arena # 06-26 St. Paul, MN - Xcel Energy Center ^ 06-27 St. Paul, MN - Xcel Energy Center ^ 07-02 Denver, CO - Pepsi Center ^ 07-03 Denver, CO - Pepsi Center ^ 07-06 Las Vegas, NV - MGM Grand Arena @ 07-07 San Diego, CA - Cox Arena @ 07-09 Los Angeles, CA - The Great Western Forum @ 07-10 Los Angeles, CA - The Great Western Forum @ 07-13 Santa Barbara, CA - Santa Barbara Bowl @ 07-16 San Francisco, CA - Bill Graham Civic Auditorium @ 07-28 San Francisco, CA - Bill Graham Civic Auditorium @ 07-22 George, WA - The Gorge * with My Morning Jacket # with Robert Pollard ^ with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers @ with Sonic Youth In other Sonic Youth news, Sonic Youth's upcoming record, Rather Ripped, is scheduled for a June 13 release courtesy of Geffen (the vinyl lands on the band's Goofin' Records). But you knew that already. What you didn't know, and what Billboard.com has just reported, is that Moore, Kim Gordon, and their daughter Coco will appear on the May 9 season finale of "Gilmore Girls". Apparently, the trio (with Coco on "shakers"?!) will play an acoustic version of the Rather Ripped song "What a Waste". It's official: "Gilmore Girls" is now the coolest show on television. Sorry, "Aqua Teen". Interested parties can also tune into Air America's Marc Maron show tonight, where Moore will reveal more about the album. A few weeks prior to Ripped's release, Matthew Stearn's 33 1/3 series book analyzing SY's 1988 classic, Daydream Nation, will be published by Continuum Books. Finally, Thurston has been tapped to curate All Tomorrow's Parties' Nightmare Before Christmas festival, taking place this December in England. So far, the only acts announced are Sonic Youth and Iggy & the Stooges, but can you really fuck with that? No. Sonic Youth non-Pearl Jam dates: 04-20 Paris, France - Nouveau Casino 06-18 Manchester, TN - Bonnaroo * 08-05 Chicago, IL - Grant Park (Lollapalooza) ^ 12-08-10 Minehead, England - Butlins Holiday Resort # * with Radiohead, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Beck, Elvis Costello, Cat Power, lotsa other people ^ with the Flaming Lips, Kanye West, Wilco, Death Cab for Cutie, the Raconteurs, Queens of the Stone Age, the Shins, the Go! 12. You're right... it's probably rote for politicians to enjoy the old hat of Peter B.
  13. http://www.oxfordamericanmag.com/oastorevi...60&EntryVend=OA It was in an interview from The Oxford Magazine 2001 music issue, after Clinton's last term. The writer had ten minutes to interview Clinton specifically about music while the former Pres was taking a limo ride to an airport. It's a two page piece. Clinton sites all the usual musicians he's touted, Elvis, Fleetwood Mac, and Stan Getz. It's about two thirds in that the writer asks that question and Clinton answers, "Brotzmann, the tenor sax player, one of the greatest alive." I was sitting in the living room, listening to new acquisitions and reading new mags, and literally howled with yelps of laughter when I read that. Within a week it was on the Chi-Improv list and other internet avenues where avante-skronk is discussed. Gotta luv Bubba for that one. I picture him a pot puffing youngster at Oxford, and freaking out when the Brotzmann/Van Hove/Bennink appeared in concert to blow the college kids' minds.
  14. 87 was one of my favorite rock years ever. Sonic Youth "Sister," Dinosaur Jr. "You're Living All Over Me," Butthole Surfers "Locust Abortion Technician," The Pixies "Come On Pilgrim," Big Black "Songs About Fucking," Pere Ubu "The Tenement Year," just to name a few of the records I was spinning. Today I got the latest Mission of Burma "The Obliterati," which has gotten great reviews. Also, "Reveille" by art punks Deerhoof, and used copies of Th' Faith Healers "lido" and "Something About Airplanes" by Death Cab for Cutie.
  15. I've loved the last two SY records, too, especially Murray St. That really brought me back to the band. Mark Ibold, from Pavement, is going to be on bass for the tour, instead of O'Rourke.
  16. You ever hear the Butthole Surfers version - Sweat Loaf? I was going to ask that. "Son, it's better to regret something you HAVE done, then to regret something you HAVEN'T done... and by the way, if you see your mom this weekend, be sure and tell her, SATAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
  17. I took a Jazz History class while in college at Southern Illinois U., back in the early 80s. The instructor was a clarinet player, classically trained, but he loved jazz. He did indeed follow the Smithsonian box, but brought in lots of other records to play and talk about. This was one of those extra curriculem credit classes, and it was big, maybe 100 people. I have a distinct memory of a younger African American guy and his girlfriend sitting in front of me during the first class. The instructor was talking about pre-recording influences on the music, hollers, call and response, New Orleans, Congo Square, all that, and the guy leaned back, put his hat on his face and told his girlfriend, "Wake me up when we get to Grover Washington." I think he may have woke up when the teacher played "Ascension" three months later. I loved that class, and up until then my knowledge of jazz was Basie, Ellington, Goodman and Lionel Hampton. I walked away with a lifetime love of Monk, Trane, Ornette, Bird, Tatum, and Armstrong. And a desire to know more about this genre.
  18. Least interesting episode all season. It made me squirm, though, and I kept thinking, "there goes Artie." But the guy has nine lives. Did you notice that the only moment of calm in the entire hour was the last shots of Artie cooking?
  19. New rock I'm digging: Pink Mountaintops Constantines Black Mountain The New Pornographers Silver Jews Robert Pollard Kings of Leon The Decemberists Sleater-Kinney Spoon
  20. DOOLITTLE. Although, I really really really love Surfer Rosa, too, which was my intro to the band, and a constant listen for 17 or 18 years.

  24. Thanks, Lazaro. If, by people, you mean saxophonists, I believe you heard the new Odeon Pope "Locked and Loaded," the tune was "Munta Chant" featuring James Carter. If you mean real people screaming, it was sound effects.
  25. We've been back on an even-keel for at least 6 years or so, probably even more. The first two after the change were definitely brutal, but that was a decade ago. We're going to be short on our current drive, but we raised record amounts (for us) last fall, spring and in 04. Our dollar goal is going to be short (unless stuff pours in over the weekend), but our member numbers are very high (for us), which indicates that lots of people are pledging, but at smaller amounts. Yup, NPR...
