    An official book about Finnish Jazz
  6. Thanks Fabio, yes looks very interesting. Any source available? Have about 1.500 reels/Cassette tapes with unissued material and only a small portion digitized I do collect only specials like the one mentionerd above if the quality is first rate. Willie
  7. For me with a lot of Kenton Items in the collection these are the 2 discs I favourite most: a) New concepts of artistry in rhythm b) Contemporary concepts.

  9. Thanks for that. Have to look it up. Hilton Ruiz on bord is great. Here you can find more on a list of his recordings https://www.discogs.com/de/artist/253367-George-Coleman
  10. Was a treat for sure .... It really was. They came from Laren, Netherlands, where they played several concerts in November 1981
  11. Mentioning George Coleman (in the Hilton Ruiz thread) reminds me of a concert we had in our private jazzclub in Koblenz, Germany with the George Coleman Octet on Dec. 02, 1981 George Coleman (ts & Leader) / Sal Nistico (ts) / Danny Moore (tp) / Mario Rivera (bs) / Bobby Watson (as) / Harold Mabern (p) / Clint Houston (b) / Billy Higgisns (dr) Here is the only LP I have fom the GC Octet with slighly different band members: Affinity AFF 178 (reissue of original Catalyst LP) Fotos from the Koblenz concert will follow

  13. Great. I like his style very much (even as Bill Evans & Oscar Peterson fan). Living in a small town near the Rhine river there is not much live jazz available.
  14. On top of this thread the artist looked like a sax player to me. But he is obviously not the leader So you seem to be correct. The speaker in that clip looks like the Hilton Ruiz I know so I have to correct my post. Thanks for the INFO ;-}}
  15. I have that album on CD and it gets its spin every year to the holidays. A fine sound for me but not as adventurous as "Contemporary Concepts" with the great Bill Holman arrangemets ;-]]
  16. More Hilton Ruiz playing jazz. Here is his LP on the DENON label A real hard "cookin'" crew with long solos and great soloists. Highly recommended.
  17. Yes agreed. It is not a normal "cover art" book [my fault]. Some other member informed me about the thread of written material where it belongs. So hopefully that matter is vleared. Thanks
  18. Another one I havent seen or mentioned here and this one - Title is a bit irritating because its a Shorty Rogers group
  19. Havent seen this one mentioned here: and one more - this time on CD
  20. I have these cuts on LP and CD before.. BUT, my question is whether this is available on a full-length DVD with decent sound? God! I hope so ... Here is the japanese edition from the AUREX Festival Have some more tracks on my harddisc which were not issued on official recordings but only broadcasted.
  21. Hopefully you've found it in the meantime? Its on a Giant Steps CD GSCR 032 and contains also the funny episode for that You Tube comic "Three little Bops" with Stan Freberg.
  22. Correct. Shorty Rogers, Bud Shank, Bob Cooper,Art Pepper,Shelly Manne, Curtis Counce, Conte Candoli, Lee Konitz,Frank Rosdolino, Maynard Ferguson, you name them and they all did succeed in in way or the other with their own groups and orchestras (Sh. Rogers / M. Ferguson). Most of these artist´s are in my collection. A good source is this one By Terry Vosbein with all tracks listed (not the albums however) http://allthingskenton.com/table_of_contents/recordings/mosaic/holman_russo/
  23. May I join as "newbie" to the "I like Kenton family" if there is one. I have the Sparke book and also the complete Capitol recordings book. I would divide the Kento Era in 3 periods: the early Kenton up to the late 1940s, the middle Kenton up to the end of 1960s and the rest. He was called "The restless searcher" but obviously never found what he was searching. When he started the "Neophonic thing" he lost me. Have about 110 of his recordings and like most the middle part starting with his 1952 "Kenton Presents" up to the a bit commercial "The stage door swings". Inbetween we have the real jewels "New Concepts Of Artistry in Rhythm" , "Cuban Fire" & "Contemporary Concepts". Also "Kenton in Sweden" from 1956 belongs to that period I prefer from his complete work. Other members may haver different preferences. One of the real highlights i listened recently is the track Art Pepper on "Kenton presents". Can also recomment the PAUSA LP PR 9016: "Shorty Rogers" - 14 historic arrangements & performances with Stan Kenton / June Christy/ The Giants featuring Art Pepper. Much of the color and sound of the Kenton Orchestra was heavy influenced by the arrangers as Rugulo, Holman,Russo, Stan himself and later Dee Barton. An interesting series on his own Creative World label is the series "By Request!" which compiles a lot of tracks which never appeared on the LP's.
  24. That could be a task for all the members here with some Information from their own recording. I think there will be a lot to list. Thanks
