  1. Check out the cars today that can run on a mixture of 85% ethanol and 15% gas. Available E85 Cars If we only had a way to get the fuel.....
  2. Yes! The hybrid is the ticket. I don't care if I have to plug it in every day. With a car like that, and hopefully ethanol being in the mix, we're on the way. My next car will be a hybrid. I wish it could be the plug in variety. Hydrogen may be the answer.....someday. NOT now. The auto makers and government, IMO, should not be looking at hydrogen as the next step. They aren't even close to perfecting a delivery method for this. Bush thinks it would "wreck the economy" to reduce greenhouse gases per the Kyoto protocol but he thinks hydrogen is a viable solution to reduce our dependence on foreign oil? That's funny. I can't imagine what it would cost to make hydrogen available to the mass market. Ethanol, however, can be delivered by the same equipment used for gasoline. And anybody can make ethanol or the variety of crops that can be used to make it, so it will always be a commodity that can't be controlled by a handful of countries. What the hell are we waiting for? I'm with the others who are happy with the high gas prices. It's the only thing that will get people's attention. I continue to be amazed at the stupidity of OPEC. They should be doing everything they can to gouge us as much as possible without really getting people's attention. But maybe the Saudi's and some of the others really are at capacity and they're powerless to stop this.
  3. My 2 cents about this energy mess. I wish the Government would take a good hard look at what's going on in Brazil and put together a strategy to move us in that direction. Biofuels, and the way they are using them in Brazil, makes sense to me. I know that Biofuels were mentioned in the new bill, but do we really have a comprehensive strategy? I love the idea of hydrogen fuel cells, etc. but there's no reasonable way to deliver it even if we could get it to market in a reasonable amount of time. In Brazil, a high percentage of new cars (25% maybe? Sorry, don't have time to look it up right now) include a regulator that can automatically adjust according to whether a vehicle is running on Gas, biofuel or any combination of the 2. Also, biofuel can be delivered using the same gas station equipment that's used today for gas. There couldn't possibly be a less painful transition. If the government could create incentives for car makers to offer the regulation equipment, gas stations to offer biofuel (there only needs to be one pump in my whole damn area and I'd go out of my way to use it) and for consumers to buy the equipment than there'd hopefully be a big enough demand to get the ball rolling with this stuff. I don't believe that trying to get people to conserve or trying to make them feel guilty about driving an SUV is anything but a very small part of an overall strategy. Geez, I have people sitting next to me at the office who throw paper in the trash rather than walking down the aisle once a week to dump it in a recycling bin. People don't give a shit. IMO, hybrid vehicles running biofuel (even in varying percentages to start) is the way to go.

  5. This may sound excessive, but I think it would be interesting for first time viewers to plan to view it 3 times: Once cold, then again (if you're still interested) after reading Lynch's clues, then a 3rd time after reading the Salon.com article or some of the other excellent info on the web. Jazzmoose, if you read some of the info I mentioned, there are a lot of good explanations (although very often more than one) for much of the movie but the scene behind the diner's a tough one to explain for me. Creepy. BONUS: This is one of those movies that is potentially motivating in other ways. It seemed to, uh, inspire my wife.
  6. Which 2 areas in Philly??? One area is in Chester County, somewhere towards Coatesville. Can't remember the other. I think it might be in South Jersey. When the Verizon trucks pull into your neighborhood carrying fibre cable, then it's time to get excited.
  7. I have 1.5MB DSL and am happy with it. I pay $29.95/mo. Cable in my area is $43.00. I can't really justify the change. My friend, here in the Philly area, lives in one of the 2 areas where Verizon is testing faster DSL. Next week he'll have 15MB for $38/Mo.!!
  8. Yes! I found out about Smuttynose at beeradvocate.com. That was my first beer of theirs. What a contrast between Smuttynose and Rogue. Rogue has these beautiful bottles and Smuttynose has a cheap label with a couple of old guys in lounge chairs or whatever. But hell with the bottle, that's some sweet stuff. I'm just grateful I found a place that sells this kind of stuff.
  9. Loving IPA's more and more. Mostly been drinking: Victory - Hop Devil Smuttynose - IPA and I'm loving Rogue Brutal Bitter, which is an English Style bitter. I have to be desperate to drink cheap, American beer....like when there's nothing else around.
  10. In the late 70s, when I was a huge Kiss fan, I watched the most awful piece of movie trash ever created. I didn't recognize it as such at the time, but a couple of years ago ran across it at about 2AM on some shameless excuse for a cable channel. KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park (1978) But now I'm forced to check out Showgirls just to be sure.
  11. I saw Roy with Herbie and Michael Brecker a couple of weeks ago (also Teri Lyne Carrington and Scott Colley/Bass). Roy was SO good. The show was very uneven. Herbie and Michael had a few moments, but Roy was consistenly great from start to finish. Definitely going to pick up more of his stuff.
  12. He was fine in the first Matrix, but by the end of the 3rd movie I was rooting for destruction of the earth. My vote for worst Keanu Reeves performance has to be "Much Ado About Nothing". What on earth was Kenneth Branaugh thinking?
  13. Even though Guy included a gorilla photo, I'll resist the temptation to unleash the Bonobos.
  14. It's great to see a Woody thread! I happen to be watching "Another Woman" right now. Woody helped get me into Jazz. I've seen all of Woody's movies at least once. The only ones I truly didn't enjoy were Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy and Anything Else (I even enjoyed Hollywood Ending much more than this one). But even when it comes to most of Woody's "lesser" films, I'd rather be watching his stuff than almost anything else. Great quotes above. I whipped out a great Woody quote the other night when it was appropriate for a situation. To Merill Streep: "My analyst warned me about you. But you were so beautiful that I got another analyst". Favorites: Hannah and Her Sisters (had to see this one 12 or 14 times) Manhattan Stardust Memories Annie Hall I'm hoping he returns to form with the next one (Will Ferrell is in it). It got some good reviews in Europe but there might have been some delays in releasing in the US (Not a good sign). Lenny
