CD burning software: what are the best options?
makpjazz57 replied to riverrat's topic in Audio Talk
Hi Jim, Thanks. I think I'm going to start this again in the morning, beginning with reinstalling Nero (and GEAR). One at a time and see if any of it works. I was also thinking perhaps some kind of computer virus moved my E drive somewhere? Or is that too far-fetched. Marla -
CD burning software: what are the best options?
makpjazz57 replied to riverrat's topic in Audio Talk
Hi Kevin/All, 1) tried the "add system" hardware and the system came back to say no new hardware found. 2) Jim - the system indicated the WDC device was "working properly 3) Kevin - I did the system restore and two things happened: a. when the system rebooted after going back to a few days before installing the the CD burning software packages, during the restart, the green light on my "E" drive did light up! However, when I went to "My Computer" and looked at my installed drives, no "E" drive showed up. b. The restore process also gave a report of the fatal error that happened on Dec 1 and I did a cut/past of the Microsoft report, which points to driver problem(s)!: Error caused by a device driver Thank you for submitting an error report. Problem description A device driver installed on your computer caused the problem; however, we cannot determine the precise cause. To troubleshoot the problem, see Getting help. Getting help Depending on which situation is applicable to you, please do one of the following: If this problem occurred after you installed a new hardware device on your computer, the problem might be caused by the driver for the device. Use the Driver Rollback utility or uninstall the driver. If this problem occurred after you installed new software, the software might have installed a driver that caused the problem. Try uninstalling the software. If you don't know the specific driver or software, try performing a System Restore. Check for updated drivers on the Microsoft Windows Update website. For information about your support options, visit: Support.Dell.Com So, the question is, do I use the "driver rollback utility." I'm also now remembering Nero gave me a lot of trouble with the uninstall, so maybe there are still drivers from that software installed on my computer? For the heck of it and future reference, if I don't get this problem fixed at home, will be sure to post a brief statement of the resolution of the problem once I get it to a computer repair place. As always, thanks! Marla -
CD burning software: what are the best options?

Next question: I opened up the "add new hardware" section and the options below (minus possibilities like printers and USB Hubs): SoundMAX Integrated Dig Aud Audio Codecs Legacy Audio Drives Media Control Devices Legacy Video Capture Drives Video Codecs WDC WD1200JB-75CRA0 (might this be the lost E drive)? IDE channel the other option is "add new hardware" - would that be the one to select? My E drive's manufacturer is NEC, if I remember correctly, by the way. -

Thanks, Jim. Already did those steps. Just checked again to be sure and yes, all of those files are installed. The mystery continues... Marla -
CD burning software: what are the best options?
makpjazz57 replied to riverrat's topic in Audio Talk
Marla, If the drive is not displayed in device manager, there really seems to be a hardware problem. Maybe someone can test the drive on another PC to make sure it is at fault (and not the IDE cable or the mainboard) Not necessarily. I uninstalled Roxio from one of my computer once and after rebooting my burner was gone. It wasn't selectable as a drive, it wasn't in Device Manager, nothing. I forget how I got it back unfortunately. I'll see what I can find online about it. Hi Jim, Thanks for your generosity! Appreciate it. Since I can't afford to get my PC fixed 'til the next paycheck, that works out great. Yeah, just disappeared into thin air. Sounds like this type problem could be inherent in CD burning/copying software (some types)? Thanks, Marla -

Both drives need to be checked now and you are probably correct! I'll report back. Thanks for your help, Marla -
CD burning software: what are the best options?

Did the ASPI download, ran it and then did a reboot and the E drive is still nowhere to be found. I thank you for trying to help me, though! Open to other suggestions if you have any! Regards, Marla -

It's most likely an ASPI Layer issue. Look here. Thanks, Mr. Gone. Another question before I download this software: The last update of the ASPI software seems to be November 2002. Would that be correct? The other stupid question from a novice: if I do download the ASPI software, will my "E" drive miraculously appear again or do I have to do something else? Regards, Marla -
CD burning software: what are the best options?

Hi Claude, Under "device manager," all that is showing is my external Sony drive. My "D" drive has been in trouble for a long time - will need to be replaced, and after doing the above, my "E" drive is not appearing at all. I removed the Gear software after the problem (used the PC's "Uninstall" feature. I've rebooted several times over the past few days and my E drive is still not appearing - strangest PC thing that ever happened to me! The question is: Even though I uninstalled the Gear software, should I still click on the link you provided earlier and download/run the Gear driver removal software? Regards and thanks, Marla -

Thanks so much, Claude. I had a trial version of GEAR and when my "E" drive disappeared, I decided to uninstall GEAR. I guess there is nothing else I can do to get my PC to again recognize my "E" drive? I downloaded an easy-to-use CD/DVD burner/copier, DropToCD. Easy to use and so far, fine for my basic needs. Wow, Greg...just the other day, the same thing happened to me - my "E" drive just disappeared, but the culprit in this case seemed to be a trial download of GEAR CD/DVD burning software. Right now, I can't afford to replace the drive - frightening that software can screw up hardware! Marla -

Hey Mark! Once again, some beautiful shots. Did Bud have a local rhythm section? I'm tyring real hard not to purchase any more CDs 'til the beginning of 2006, but I am sure looking forward to getting the Shank/Woods collaboration recording! Marla

Shamefully, I'm not as familiar with Brooks' work as I should be. Can anyone recommend some CDs/recordings in which Brooks is heavily featured. Since I'm a Horace Silver fan, would welcome suggestions of Silver recordings featuring Brooks. Thanks, Marla

It is a shame that Steve didn't record more under his own name, however, Buddy did feature Steve quite a bit. John, thanks for the reminder - Marcus' "Smile." I do have that and will also play it in honor of Marcus. Marla

I think both are significant and for the time period of the Bird/Diz Town Hall concert, the sound is excellent. I am grateful to have both and can't say I love one more than the other, but I do love both and realize the significance of both. I do feel bad that the Bird/Diz Town Hall concert doesn't have the same "machine" type of marketing behind it that the Monk Coltrane does, but what finds and how lucky we are to have two of them this year. Let's hope there are more to come in 2006! Marla

Also received an advance copy of this and it is going to make a lot of people happy. Much like the Bird/Diz Town Hall discovery, there's just something extra special about finding a never-been-heard-before live recording of jazz greats. Look forward to purchasing the whole package -liner notes 'n all. Marla

FROM: Susan Brecker SUBJECT: Michael Brecker needs your help. Dear Family and Friends, My husband, Michael Brecker, has been diagnosed with MDS (myelodysplastic syndrome), and its critical that he undergoes a stem cell transplant. The initial search for a donor (including Michael's siblings and children) has not yet resulted in a suitable match. Michael's doctors have told us that we need to immediately explore ALL possible options. This involves getting as many people of a similar genetic background to be tested. There are some important points to understand concerning this process: 1. The screening involves a blood test only. It can be done very quickly either at a marrow donation center or at a LOCAL LAB. The cost is anywhere from $40 to $75 and your insurance may cover it. (In NYC, you can call Frazier, at the NY Blood Bank, at 212-570-3441, and make an appointment for HLA typing. It costs $40.00.) Check with your local blood bank, or go to http://www.marrow.org to find the donor center nearest you. 2. Your blood typing information can be posted on the international registry, if you choose, where it would also be available to others in need of a transplant. BEING ON THE REGISTRY DOESN'T MEAN YOU HAVE TO DONATE, it just means that you may be ASKED to do so. You can take your name off the registry at any time. 3. Should you be selected as a potential donor for Michael, please understand that there have been tremendous advances in bone marrow transplants and the term itself can be misleading. Bone marrow donation is no more invasive than giving blood. Stem cells are simply harvested from your blood and then transplanted to Michael. 4. A match for Michael would be most likely to come from those of Eastern European Jewish descent. If you or anyone you know are in this category please make a special effort to immediately get tested. Ultimately, you would be doing something not just for Michael, but for so many more who are in a similar situation as my husband. 5. You are now part of our internet-based drive for donor testing. If everyone who receives this can motivate a bunch of their friends to get tested, and those friends then forward this email to get their friends to get tested, we will have rapidly expanded the pool of potential donors. I urge all of you to get tested AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Any local blood center/Red Cross center can assist in organizing a drive for Michael, although it would be desirable if you can get a large group, e.g. a synagogue, to sponsor it. Should you have any questions about this, please don't hesitate to get in touch with Michael's management office at 212.302.9200 or info@michaelbrecker.com. John, Can't thank you enough for the "heads up" regarding the Weiskopf/Fusco CD. Immediately visited amazon.com and purchased a copy. I've admired both Weiskopf and Fusco since their days with Buddy Rich's band and also have to highly recommend Andy Fusco's Double-Time CD, "Big Man's Blues." featuring Walt Weiskopf, Renee Rosnes, John Goldsby and Billy Drummond. Chuck, Tried searching to find out if the option to purchase from you is listed anywhere on the site and I can't find the info. That being said, can I purchase directly from you, via PayPal? Thanks, Marla

Mike, Who is the author of the RVG article? Thanks, Marla -
WHAM! is a favorite of mine. Any of the Rich recordings that included pianist Barry Kiener automatically get a zillion stars from me. Besides, that was a great time period for the band, musically speaking. I want to know if and when the other, I think, 90 plus hours of live recorded music of this band will be released (from the same time period). Marla
