  1. OOOOOHHHH-- BAAABBY!!!! Thank you!!!! Is this what Marty had(to himself)?

    Bennie Maupin

Ed, thank you very much for all that!!! Much appreciated! You are right! The cut marked as "Exhibition" on my CD is truly Mephistopheles"--I listened to Wayne's "All seeing eye" to compare. I'm diggin' Alan Shorter!! He sounds a bit like Norman Howard's brother

Maybe he's in that melody? but no solo!!! Weird! I hear alto sax--cup mute trumpet(cornet) +?
  4. Trumpet Guy

    Bennie Maupin

The original lp had Maupin on one track, "Exhibition". Most of the early cd reissues, such as the ZYX, substituted a version of Alan Shorter's "Mephistopheles" - the same composition he recorded on Wayne Shorter's "All Seeing Eye" - without documenting this in the liner notes. There is also apparently a Fontana-ESP lp, Fontana ESP-DISK' SFJL.930 (UK), that does the "Mephistopheles" switch. The latest ESP reissue has both tracks. Thanks Ed! I'm still confused--my CD is an ZYX...It has 3 cuts--one of which is "Exhibition"--no "Mephisopheles"--I don't hear Maupin on Exhibition...Should I listen again?

I guess I'll stay confused!!? Clifford_Thornton? would dig to hear that Juba-Lee now...

Maybe not your cup of tea, but Maupin also plays well on two '60s Marion Brown sides, Marion Brown Quartet (ESP) and Juba-Lee (Fontana), not to mention the Brown ECM date.
  7. This reminds me of my college Jazz pranks! My buddy (jazz drummer/"singer") and I(trumpet player) sent in to Downbeat, for their yearly competition of School bands and individual soloists, a recording for the college division jazz vocal category. I had won for high school the year before, so we thought let's try the college one--except we recorded our songs over an Aebersold record--mixed to sound like they were our band. Now my friend was an excellent drummer, for his age, but his singing was funny---to awful...We gave him the name of Snorts Malibu and sent off the audition tape to Down Beat for their Dee -BEE Awards(?)...His style was to imitate a jazzy violinist w/ banter w/ his players... So a bit later we learn that Downbeat has chosen our boy Snorts Malibu as best college vocalist in the US!! Unfortunately they called our teacher(Fred Berry--original tpt in Art Ensemble of Chicago) informing him of his student's honor--Fred--said Sh*&^&, I don't have no student named Snorts Malibu! End of honor...
  8. Man--Go to youtube and watch Elis sing "Waters of March"-- its in black & white--one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard or seen If you don't like that--I have nothing to say
  9. Donald's still playing in San Francisco--go check him out on a gig!
  10. Pulled this out last night Ornette's trumpet playing on this one(Some Day) and on Charlie Haden's, other duo record, "The Golden Number" is SO freakin' amazing. In my drunk state, i thought this was some of the most beautiful music making ever You know you hear Ornette--pure and simple---he's pushing lots of 'wrong' valves but HE makes it all work--him and my ears But truly astounding music making here--yeah Clifford and Freddie can make your cry and be in awe, but there is something truly special here. Ornette cuts Don Cherry(silly talk-I know) on that Golden Number record...Any Don Cherry quotes anywhere about Ornette's trumpet playing? Also--while we're at it...there MUST be other tunes that didn't make it on this amazing Haden record --"The Golden Number"--there's even a picture of Ornette and Don together on the record jacket...More tunes???
  11. The Chet Baker in this series is off pitch as well. The 64' part is a whole step too high/fast. I emailed them--said there was nothing they could do. True?

    Don Cherry

Just bought a vinyl copy of Don Cherry/Gato Barbieri -"Togetherness Suite" on Inner City Records. Can't say I knew about this before...but Wow!!!! Is this an obscure recording? It should be more talked about!? Great group sound--fresh approaches; yet it brings to mind historical comparisons...there's even some Jobim in there... A great purchase for me(wasn't cheap) & possibly...you I'm always looking for a similar recording at Montmare(sp??)--65'!!!Never have heard that one...

    Joe Newman

That's the one!! Mine is called "I Love My Baby"---Joe Newman going modal!! Great stuff! I will check out Mr. Kart's suggestions You can check out a bit of the O. Nelson/J. Newman "St. Louis Blues" here: http://www.artistdirect.com/nad/store/arti...,219352,00.html Perhaps there's a way to listen to all of it for free, but I'm no wizard when it comes to such things. The Verve Jazz Masters album it comes from seems to be OOP, but the piece is now on the Mosaic Nelson set. Shad Collins is good on those Prestige Basie alumni albums. There were two of them IIRC, one with just Collins and Quinichette, another with Jack Washington and perhaps others added. If you dig Collins, you need to hear the date that Dicky Wells, Collins, and two other members of the Teddy Hill trumpet section (Bill Coleman and Bill Dillard) made with Django Reinhardt in Paris in 1937. Great stuff all around, as is the rest of the date with just Coleman, Wells, Reinhardt and rhythm -- "Japanese Sandman" and "Hangin' 'Round Boudon" especially. Actually, I think Bill Coleman influenced Phil Grenadier. If true, Larry, its partly your fault!! )) What a player Bill Coleman was! Last purchase of his was a late one--"Bill Coleman/Ben Webster Swingin' In London" (67' Black lion)--more great stuff! Why is my Joe Newman "I Love My Baby"--and others are "I Love My Woman"??

    Joe Newman

I say Joe Newman was influenced by Shad Collins! I really have no idea , but hearing Shad Collins circa 39' reminded me of Newman's swing and feel... Has "I Love My Baby"--been mentioned ?
  16. Thank you John and Claude! So I guess those are good rankings? I don't know their rating system, but if I'm up there above Miles and Diz then something's goofy
  17. Hi--Was wondering if anyone had The Penguin Guide 8th Edition? A friend of a friend said that I had a listing and got a good review on one or two of my CDs...Can anyone confirm or deny, please? My name--P.Grenadier
  18. Never thought I'd say this...there are 2 Don Joseph videos up at youtube!!!!
  19. Lots of talk...what about the trumpet playing? It takes a back seat--not very noteworthy from what I've heard...Concepts aside...
  20. Very interesting!! On Treasure Island I love the tune--"Fullsuvollivus"! So far I've purchased--"The Mourning of a Star"(drop the needle on this one; they're in the middle of it all and truly killin'!!!), El Juicio, Treasure Island, Death of a Flower, Shades. Each one is truly doing it for me I would not call it cheezy but I know what you all are sayin'---I didn't care for it some of that gospel-ly straight 8th stuff, but now am feelin' where its comin' from somehow...Opening my ears, mind and heart. I'm just scratching the surface with this music--but I find the somewhat opposite directions of some of the tunes enlightening. There definitely is a thread through all of it--- the flow of improvisation... Maybe what I find most remarkable( as I've been sleeping on this period--I started with Standards Trio)--is the huge influence this music has had on other musicians over time and especially RIGHT NOW---now I can hear where many bassists, drummers and pianists and sax players got a LOT of their ideas and style. Who knew ? I will be buying more
  21. I'm now just discovering this period of Keith Jarrett and am buying up the 70's trio and American Quartet on vinyl. got this one and of course I liked it. First hearing of Sam Brown for me...I dug it--made me think of local legend Mick Goodrick---was Mick influenced by Sam Brown? Or is it possible(which a friend suggested) Sam was at Berklee and quite possibly studied with Mick...I don't know about that!! Hello to my old friends here, Jazzbo, Jlhoots and Jsngry!!!! 3 J's!
  22. Very interesting Larry! Sounds like something I would enjoy--please keep us posted, as will I regarding those sideman releases...
  23. Glad you 2 dug it!!! Do you recognize who Hans Groiner REALLY is? Organist/pianist... Thanks Larry for asking about my musical activities--I'm hanging in there. Done quite a few sideman CDs lately that are coming out. Traveling some--still really want to visit Chicago, for my first time. Getting ready now to do my own CD again--I've waited 5 years since my last one--so I know you'll hear more growth in my conception... But its tough--4 jazz gigs this week(which I'm lucky to have)--total pay $90 More writings from you coming? Hans Groiner's #1 fan
  24. Thank you Larry!!! I often think about your writings and thoughts---you've been a great influence on me--Thanks Larry!
  25. I cannot believe no one has taken my recommendation to check out Hans Groiner It is a joke--by a famous jazz pianist... I thought people here would dig it...
