Miles Davis: The Bootleg Series, Vol. 7
Face of the Bass replied to dougcrates's topic in New Releases
Miles's 1980s music is bad. Every time I give it a try it disappoints me. They really, really, really need to release a set around the Cosey band. It's criminal that they haven't done so. Don't tell me that it's too uncompromising. A lot of people love that music. -
Which Box Sets do You Regret Buying, and Why?
Face of the Bass replied to northwood's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Pretty much any time I bought a Mosaic box based off of the fact that it was Mosaic rather than really wanting the music. Mosaic has done so many forgettable (from my perspective) sets. -
ORNETTE COLEMAN - ROUND TRIP: ORNETTE COLEMAN ON BLUE NOTE
Face of the Bass replied to dougcrates's topic in Re-issues
I picked this up at my local record store this week. I think it is one of the most beautiful box sets I have ever seen. The photos and everything are absolutely incredible. Of course, I had almost all of this on CD, but I haven't listened to the CDs in years and I didn't have any of it on vinyl. I am enjoying the set a great deal, mainly because other than the Golden Circle albums I have never paid too much attention to Ornette's Blue Note period. For me, there haven't been many good jazz box sets in the last couple years. I haven't liked/been interested in any of the Mosaic releases. The best ones that have come out have been the Blue Note Lee Morgan box and this one. -
Miles Davis: The Bootleg Series, Vol. 7
Face of the Bass replied to dougcrates's topic in New Releases
I don't understand why they didn't release it years ago. All the metal spine boxes they did seemed to be heading towards a culmination with the Agharta/Pangaea material. Why was that box never released? -
Thanks for the responses. Would love to see recommendations for specific recordings featuring trombone, say from the last 20 years or so. I know the question is revealing my ignorance, but listening to older jazz I realized this is an instrument I have always loved to hear, and yet I don't know a lot that has been produced in the 21st century... Thanks for reminding me of Petrella. I saw him play live in New York with Enrico Rava several years ago, and he stood out for sure.

This will seem like a ridiculous question perhaps, but who are the best jazz trombonists working today? Especially interested in those who have recorded as a leader. Thanks!

Lee Morgan - Complete Live at the Lighthouse
Face of the Bass replied to Mark13's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
The photos are fantastic. It's a beautiful set. I'm so grateful that they released all this material and gave it the treatment it deserved. -
Lee Morgan - Complete Live at the Lighthouse
Face of the Bass replied to Mark13's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
To my ears so far this set is the best new archival jazz release in years. -
Lee Morgan - Complete Live at the Lighthouse

I never understood why people weren't more pumped for this release. Yes, it was going to be repetitive. So is the Miles Plugged Nickel set. Lee Morgan for me is second only to Miles Davis as far as jazz trumpeters go. Previously unreleased high-quality recordings put out in an affordable CD box set? Yes please. I've gotten through the first two discs and it's fantastic. -

New Jazz Festival Balver Hohle 11-CD Set
Face of the Bass replied to Face of the Bass's topic in Recommendations
Thanks! I'm kind of surprised that no one has mentioned it here. People on this board, including myself, generally are obsessive when it comes to tracking down box sets! -
I was wondering if anyone has heard this Bear Family box set of the Balver Hole New Jazz Festival from 1974-1975. Apologies if this has been discussed, but when I did a search nothing came up. Would like to know if this is worth tracking down. Thanks!

The Cecil Taylor albums on New World Records, Cecil Taylor Unit and 3 Phasis, were absolutely instrumental in helping me fall in love with jazz when I first started listening back in 2003 and 2004.

Covid vaccination: poll
Face of the Bass replied to David Ayers's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I got the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine on February 6, due to being a schoolteacher. I had a lot of arm soreness from it, but that's it as far as side effects. I should be getting my second dose in about 10 days or so. -
Oh no, that's deserted island material. That's not going anywhere!

I came close to having every Paul Chambers session that's been released, but as I got near the end, I got to some real dreck and made it me doubt the whole enterprise.

Favorite ECM Records of the 21st Century
Face of the Bass replied to Face of the Bass's topic in Recommendations
Yeah, that's actually why I made it specific to the 21st century. Most of the time when people list their favorite ECM records, there's a lot of stuff from back in the 1970s. Given how much music ECM puts out, I figured there's probably some good stuff that I've missed. -
Please name your favorite ECM Records of the 21st century, (2000-2020). Thanks!

Face of the Bass replied to colinmce's topic in New Releases
Thanks! This is helpful. The only ones of these I've heard are the Leandre and the Dixon. I will check these out.
