  1. Sorry to hear this. R.I.P
  2. Oh yes, a wonderful disc, though that's the Sony set of course. Different label and all that. Only the first etude of Book 3 was written at the time of that release (1995/96). The last 3 recorded for Teldec in 2002 and included on the "African Rhythms" disc - he also re-recorded etudes 4, 8 & 12 for that disc's theme. So we need both the Sony and Teldec for Aimard's complete Ligeti etudes. Btw, no doubt you already know this of course, I only mention it in case anyone's confused - one of the reviews on Amazon seems to suggest that the Teldec box contains a few of the Sony recordings but missing the rest. Now I'm confused!
  3. Paul, I like the Serkin as well, though I seem to reach for the Aimard more often than the other versions I have. Worth mentioning that Aimard plays it noticeably faster than the Serkin (or most others I've heard) but it certainly works for me! I have the original CD release (Teldec) but a friend of mine recently bought his 6 CD set of "Warner Recordings" for only a few dollars more that includes the Vingt... Edit: This is the set I meant, though it was cheaper in Australia - NOT often I can say that https://www.amazon.com/Complete-Warner-20th-Century-Recordings/dp/B007KKKGQG/ref=sr_1_10?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1547022183&sr=1-10&keywords=aimard+messiaen
  4. Sylvie Courvoisier Trio - D'Agala (Intakt Records)
  5. Irène Schweizer, Pierre Favre - Ulrichsberg (Intakt Records)
  6. Ah, sorry I meant to. Here it is. Video says it's part 1 of 2 but apparently part 2 is "blocked" in Australia. You might have no problem though. The title to search via youtube is - Kenny Wheeler (2/2) [BBC Omnibus 1977]. Alternatively, I found a different link that should work. Both parts included here, as well as a nice interview with Wheeler. https://www.rockpeaks.com/video/w/Wheeler-Kenny/Omnibus-UK-TV-series-1977/documentary-BBC-Omnibus-22 Also, I then ended up enjoying another interesting video with Norma Winstone & Evan Parker sharing memories about Wheeler. "Song for Someone" album is even mentioned (very briefly).
  7. Clark Terry - Color Changes (Candid)
  8. Thank you very much for mentioning that documentary. I didn't know that but I think I found it on youtube - will be watching that tonight and speaking of Wheeler, now playing... Tony Oxley Quintet - The Baptised Traveller (1969)
  9. Bobby Bradford with John Stevens and the Spontaneous Music Ensemble (Nessa)
  10. Yes! I'm not sure if you've already sampled it by now, but I think very good to excellent big band meets (some) free improv. Longer tracks are the best, imo others are a little short. Some very good solos throughout. Some wordless singing by Norma Winstone throughout (gorgeous) and sings "proper" on the last track. Album definitely works for me! Unfortunate that it seems unknown, I had a cassette dub back in the 90s and put off buying an LP copy as there seemed to be plenty around. I know it was talked about quite a bit down here. Anyway, I jumped on the CD when it was released. At least that's still available. No doubt you seen it but I'll post the discogs link anyway. Check out that line-up!! Ignore that selling price, much cheaper elsewhere. https://www.discogs.com/Kenny-Wheeler-Song-For-Someone/release/2312288 Edit: I can't find it on youtube, etc. Have you been able to sample this?

  15. @HutchFan Yes!! Absolutely. Haven't played that one for ages I kinda forgot how much I like it. Love it when that happens! now playing, Dave Holland Quintet - Jumpin' In
  16. I love this work and kinda like the Bohm version (first one I heard), though I agree about Karajan/Schwarzkopf. My favourite is the Rene Jacobs from 1998. Have you heard that one Larry? Thoughts? Reviews seem mixed but I prefer the singing here, especially Veronique Gens (Fiordiligi) or Barbara Fink (Dorabella) over Schwarzkopf. A friend of mine recently purchased this in a 9-CD set of the Jacobs Mozart Da Ponte Operas for much cheaper than my individual sets. A bargain I reckon! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DRWLGBB/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_1?pf_rd_p=b4bbef4e-170e-463d-8538-7eff3394b224&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B00004UIP1&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=5EB0HJS356XWWGAM7X7K&pf_rd_r=5EB0HJS356XWWGAM7X7K&pf_rd_p=b4bbef4e-170e-463d-8538-7eff3394b224
