  1. Hoping that some people here still know what a cassette player is.....and knows something about them. The one in our '96 Honda stopped working. When the cassette is inserted, it goes through a series of attempted starts and programs shifts - back and forth and then ejects. Could it just need a thorough cleaning? Or am I looking at money?

    Gary Burton

This is excellent. Burton with a group of twenty something prodigies who sound like they've been playing together for years. Beautiful songs, wondrous playing. Julian Lage is an amazing guitarist.
  3. Bol, Horns are together on 3 tracks - Somebody Loves Me, A Foggy Day, Nice Work If You Can Get It. Frank Wess solos on 2 tracks - How Long Has This Been Going On, Bess, You Is My Woman Now. A great round of solos on S'Wonderful. The trio is featured on remaining of 10 tracks.
  4. The usual stellar trio, Peter Washington, Kenny Washington joined by Phil Woods, Frank Wess, Nicholas Payton and Slide Hampton. Damn nice arrangements. Charlap and the trio are as tasty as ever. Thumb way up.
  5. There's Dazzle at 930 Lincoln. Major jazz names from time to time. http://www.dazzlejazz.com/calendar.htm Not much going on that Sunday and Monday night....unfortunately. Then there's El Chapultepec, on the corner of 19th and Market in LoDo, (Lower Downtown). El Chapultepec is a bizarre haven for modern day jazz musicians. Often times you can find the best players there after hours from an earlier performance at Dazzle. It's one of those strange but charming little places that brings in a diverse but devoted growd. Okay, it's a dive. Well worth swinging by on a jazz night. In the 50s and 60s, Ella, Sinatra, Ellington used to have their limos drop them off. Used to be a rough neighborhood but now it's about 2 or 3 blocks from Coors Field. It's fine. Once again, Sunday and Monday nights might be a problem.
  6. Or... Yo, I'm going to marry your daughter, dude. You got a problem with that?
  7. None here and amazingly, our two daughters decided against tats. They could have if they had wanted to. Tony, my observation is - keep tats away from the neck and face. Those areas are exclusively reserved for another species.
  8. This is really sad. She was very special. Beautiful in every way.
  9. If you like Scofield funk - straight, no drifting. This is for you. Goldings is fine...with Steve Jordan and Willie Weeks. Hot horns on 3 or 4 tracks. Guest vocals, Dr John, Warren Haynes, Mavis Staples, John Mayer ( not bad), Aaron Neville. David Fathead Newman guest sax. It's one of those CDs that I just leave on the five disc turntable. It's good....everytime.
  10. Sneaky...if I took that route, I might still have a higher post count than Jim! Nah... ←
  11. Thanks for going sleepless, Jim, or nearly so. All for a bunch of yay-hoos? We should be so lucky.
  12. I deleted my post and apologize. I let it get under my skin and posted something stupid. My bad.
  13. Really sorry to hear about your medical nightmare, Beri. We went through a similar trip to hell with my Pops. Your's sounds worse. About all we can do is be there to constantly ask questions and hope they have some idea of what they're doing. I hope your Mom gets better.
  14. For those who might otherwise be confused, how about clarifying which "Ron" the next time you use the name? ← Not to worry, Ron. I can assure you there is no confusion.
  15. Ohhhh, thanks Dan. It was so necessary to mention names. Have a lovely day.
  16. Damn, thems look good I can almost smell 'em out here on the range.
  17. Sorry Marty, I was an absent-minded...... Two of my favorite Hank Jones albums.
  18. quote=Son-of-a-Weizen,May 28 2005, 07:24 PM] Where I'm from, guys who can't drain significant quantities of brewage & properly grill food at the same time are called lightweights! ← Oh yeah?! Says who?
  19. Joe, Ask him what he eats for breakfast.
  20. Somebody seems to have confused Hank Jones with Percy Heath. It's quite unlikely that a Percy Heath interview will happen. So Percy doesn't have to endure that oft-asked question ever again. Hank Jones, on the other hand, has almost certainly *never* been asked that question about Love Song, his only album as a leader, so maybe that will be a nice curve ball. Then again..... Mike ← Thanks Mike. Duh.
  21. I inherited my folks old gas rig about 8 years ago. I have to admit, it's nice to turn a dial and be on your way. One thing gas doesn't do is prevent me from drinking too much and burning the shit out of everything. Whenever I'm visiting the mother-in-law and volunteer to do the grilling, she and my wife quickly answer in unison, "Oh, that's okay. You just watch the game and have another beer." Honey.
  22. Joe, It may be a question too often asked but why, after 50 some years, did he record only one album as a leader? (A Love Song (2003) That seems incredible to me.
  23. Talk about a different perspective. While I don't think Meet the Parents is a particularly great film, what makes the movie work is that people (or at least young people) can really identify with Stiller's character. (I cringed through the whole thing as I imagined myself in Focker's shoes.) Focker's not a loser - he's a regular guy who gets the shaft even though his actions seem to be mostly reasonable responses to the situation he's found himself in. It's a very weird movie because you have Stiller playing a very realistic character (who hasn't wanted to throttle an officious airline official before?) juxtaposed with De Niro's ridiculous caricature of the control-freak dad. ← Wheel, I can dig your take. Like I said, until I saw Al's reaction, I thought I was the only clown on Earth who hated it. It was contrived to the extreme. The script was for adolescents. Respectfully, I disagree. ...there was nothing real about any of the characters. Was there? Oh lordy, here it comes again....
  24. Quincy, Your parents didn't give you a hit of acid before you went in?! Bummer dude!
  25. Geez Ron, I kinda liked DiNiro playing the slightly nuts CIA guy and hooking him up to the lie detector machine and all. Oh well. Yeah, well YOU WOULD!
