  1. Hi, Also waiting for responce to PM for my eBay purchased items /Shaft
  2. The Byrd/Adams is truly truly truly great stuff! Don't hesitate. /Shaft
  3. This seller does not look "right" to me. VERY high prices and lots of bids on many of his other auctions that are priced very high too. Always just one bid. Smells like "Shill bidding" or what you call it.... /Shaft
  4. Hi Guys, The Quincy mosaic box i s now available for pre order at Mosaic. I've ordered it. As a Quincy fan I have the japaneese mini LP's of some of the material. I just wish they had included some of the never issued Mercury material like "Plays the music og Henry Mancini". The songs I've heard on compilation albums sound very much jazzy enough for me to be included. To bad really, when they had the chance. /Shaft

    Gambit Records

Hi I like First Flight. Very atmospheric recording with enthusiastic audience. Sound is OK but not more on the Delmark. /Shaft
  6. Hi, I purchased the All night and All day on regular OJC and they sound good to me. The Lonehills often soundqualitywise sound a bit "Dull" to me. /Shaft
  7. Yeah! I just love everything about Wes Montgomery. I was first into his Verve catalogue on an old vinyl best of the verve years. Personally I don't mind some orchestration and strings. I'm very fond of the "Going out of my head" album. I was just a bit sorry to read (if it's true) that Wes did not like to record with the studio orchestra since he felt inferior by not being able to read notes.... /Shaft
  8. Hi again, It's cool guys We don't have to like everything that someone else likes. Ella was a true artist and her career was really awesome. I was listening to her early Decca sides yesterday and a tissket a tasket with Chick Webb's orch was also great in my opinion. Then i put on "Blue Skies" from the Songbooks and was really blown away. That is one great song! And then some Ella & Louis (Armstrong) and you have a nice day ahead of you ;-) About Ella & Jobim. I just know that more people would like it if they listened to it and who knows some more will maybe just itune-it-down after this or just give it a quick preview listen? Why not? /Shaft
  9. Hi I have had this excellent music on LP and then on CD and was happy to find it remastered in a K2 version. It sounds more than OK for me. The musicians sound clean and Abe Laboriel's (remember him?) bass lines sounds full and rounded. Toots harmonica sounds as great as ever and Joe Pass soft electric guitar hovers on top of it all. His playing is really good. He always finds just the right note just as Zoot Sims also does. Ellas voice is not in her prime and is presentet a tad mellower than other recordings. But whats she lacks in power, pyrotechnics and clarity she gains in expressiveness and sheer happiness in he material. She really likes to sing this. You can hear her smile;-) This is the last songbook by Ella. It is not big band swing or ballads with strings. It is a smaller and tighter band that play like a mix of brazil and "grown up" contemporary jazz. Alex Acuna and Paulinho da Costa lays down some tasty percussion very very tasty indeed. s Jim rightly says it is not pure bossa nova in any sense. It is more an interpretation of the melodies put in another setting. However it is far from pop. Just listen to Joe Pass's solo in Triste he's just in there improvising. Well as you can hear I'm quite taken by this album. But since I've had it in some form the last 20 years and listened to it many times I guess I am a bit biased by this personal favourite. However it would be nice if it finds a home in someone elses heart ;-) /Shaft
  10. I've never heard (or even seen) it. Is it really that bad? I've heard worse...but it's the only Turrentine Blue Note album I have that only got played once...and I'm a Turrentine fanatic. Apart from the newie, which I just haven't got round to, it's the only ST BN I've never bought, nor wanted to buy. heard it plenty, when I was working in a record shop in '69. MG Yeah it is not that good....I agree I do prefer the sister album "The Look of Love" with arrangements by....Thad Jones. /Shaft
  11. I like it too - a lot ,-) It gets alot of play here as well. /Shaft PS. But of course I knew it would be OK - I mean it's turrentine on Blue Note. What can go wrong?
  12. Hi Impossible to choose just one. My favourites would be: -Nat Cole Complete Capitol Set -Farmer/Golson Jazztet -Turrentine set -Jazz Crusaders set Pleasant surprises: Max Roach set. Lou Donaldson set. /Shaft
  13. The Quincy Jones set probably. Shaft
  14. Way too much for a DCC. This sellers whole stock is severely overpriced and I guess he will not sell much at these prices. Maybe the strategy is to lower the prices to "only" 150 and make it seem like a "bargain" ;-) This seller has been expensive for a while and I've never bought anything from him - and I do not plan to either... /Shaft
  15. Yeah, I ordered it from Amazon! Sounded very good on the clips from e-music. /Shaft For you guys who does not have the greta (Blue Note) "Boss Horn", Please get it ;-)
  16. Hi, The CD of Mancini's Combo also sounds great. Must be thanks to a good recording. The Pink Panther re-issue on Buddha (CD) also sound spectacular. Big big sound.... My favourite CD Mancini is however the Film Music from Breakfast at Tiffany's on XRCD (Japan CD). Buy with confidence! /Shaft
  17. They are re-releasing some verve box sets in a cheaper packaging. I got a pre-release mail from amazon in Germany. I was on the verge to order Birds 10-disc set for 40 euros but after investigating it really sounded like it was just more or less the discs themselves and no real booklet or great packaging. I mean OK if you do not care for information and essays and just want he music. But personally I think that is really what box sets are for. Great information, photos, essays and interviews and some attractive packaging to go with that. Often the stories about jazz is as captivating as the music itself and it adds to the experience for me to learn more about the artists and their lives. And yes I have the Pres-box and heartily recommend it! The sides with for instance Oscar Pterson are really great! /Shaft
  18. Duke Ellington The Centennial RCA Edition Disc 2. This is really a piece of American history. I don't have that much by Ellington before but this is really good I can hear. Any comments? /Shaft
  19. That is very good news for us Europeans buyers! I already noticed it and finally you do not need to import he new RVG's. /Shaft
  20. Hi, Good valid questions and I'm probably not the expert but here are my views: 1. The JRVG's started in 1998 before the domestic RVG (and EU) 1999. Articles say that in the beginning Rudy did a few tricks to suit the spirit of what Alfred Lion (the producer of Blue Note) hears at the control table in his studio. Rudy was for instance working and adjusting the sound by narrowing the stereo spread to almost mono from stereo masters. These early JRVG can sound rather thin and forward at times. Ok some snap and sparkle but those hi-hats can make you cringe from time to time. 2. It would seem strange to remaster them again one year later, but (4) I don't have actual CD's to compare. Would there be separate masters it would however be most likely to be 1998 JRVG releases. Some other member surely have some more input here. There is an interesting article here In my impression and speaking in general terms the RVG's also did this in the beginning but gradually got better and better. Some JRVG's are really "duds" like Off to the races win Don Byrd - just terrible!. I cannot remeber when the JRVG stopped but they did around 200 discs I think. I would just keep my JRVG's they are very cool and if I don't like the sound of some I would replace with another TOCJ or older domestic release if possible. /Shaft
  21. Great CD! Just get it;-) It has been reissued several times. /Shaft
  22. Thanks I was afraid of that. On the other hand he plays so damn good so I do not know what to to.....;-( /Shaft PS. Why did he not let the others through? Did he want to be the only star or was it a producer thing? He played with Jug (Gene Ammons) a lot and no problem there... DS
  23. Sorry wrong Thread but I was so excited by this box! Peace Shaft Stanley Turrentine "Jubilee Shout". Great Stuff! /Shaft
  24. I'm leaning towards the Stitt. I already got the CD when he plays arrangements by Quincy Jones. From the samples on mosaicrecords it seems he is the mail solist most of the time? It is nice if the soloing takes turns I think. Any info on that? /Shaft
  25. Hi Guys, Yeah the Hank Mobley is indeed a great session (not to promote the eBay sale though). It was also issued in a Mini LP style CD in 2000 as a Japaneese Rudy van Gelder edition so it can't be that rare can it? I have the mini LP and I'm happy with that (the sound Q is excellent). Wasn't it also issued in the new TOCJ Toshiba 24-bit selection?? I'm not sure about that though. Well soon enough it will certainly be a regular RVG. The pain is just to wait I know ;-) I heartily agree that why "help" people make more money through eBay? Jazz is about love and not money. I never sell anything. If I have double copies (rarely) I tend to give them away to family and friends. However this guy aquired the CD's through the sale and not from some member here I guess - that would be worse I think. And that guy would get a bad reputation too very fast I guess.....The chance is that he/she saw the tip on the sale on this board. Maybe he did or maybe he did not? The trade option as mentioned by Morganized is perhaps better but I understand that it can be hard to find the right trader and come to terms regarding the items especially if they are rare. Too bad if everything has to go to eBay and not be posted in this board which I look at most very day and I've bought some nice items directly from board members. Thankyou! Just my 5 cents /Shaft
