  1. A lot of people traded in their LP collections for chep money at the time when CDs got popular - pre-internet et al. so I don't see why this should be a hoax from our friend in Denmark. For me an LP cover is part of the experience of listening to a record. A nice laminated cover with information and nice pictures adds to the experience. The music is the most important of course but there is a reason that an original BN LP costs ten times as much as the CD-version. Same music different packaging. Best case on a sunny day the LP maybe can sound better but most often not It's not about he music anymore - it is about collecting and collectors want minty things that are complete. If a coverless LP fetches a price it is probably just because the buyer already has an OK cover but a bad or damaged LP that needs replacing and you can enjoy or sell a better complete copy. BTW you see what is going on now. People are selling out their CD collections to put hem on harddrives or go the download way or Spotify. A lot of CDs will sell cheap the coming years and the rare titles will become collectible I'm sure. Sorry for the OT. /Shaft
  2. That would be the booklet for the big box then?? /Shaft
  3. Please note that the booklet for this German edition is in German only. BR Shaft
  4. Hi The TOCJ-1568 is great sounding in this stereo edition. I have it and really cherish listening to it. The stereo seperation is wide and instruments are in either channel as often in early stereo. Sax, trumpet is left channel - bass and drums in right channel. Piano is however presented in dead center ;-) Acoustic ambience is nicely presented however and makes this OK for me to listen in headphones too. /Shaft

  10. Hi, Lee Morgan indeed has on solo on "The Great Wild World of Quincy Jones in the song Air Mail Special." Very nice solo indeed even if it's not really a Lee Morgan essential CD he makes a wonderfully "hot" effort ;-) If you want the music you have a couple of ways to go: 1. By the Japaneese CDs. Jewel or Mini LP 2. Get the Lonehill edition 3. Buy the Quincy Mosaic box. It is a VERY nice big band box. Happy Hunting! /Shaft
  11. Hi the RVG CD version does not sound as it was sourced from a master tape at least.... /Shaft
  12. Jobim + Deodato (+Sinatra) = Pure Bliss!
  13. Thanks for the thumbs up ;-) I would give an aarm and a leg to go to that concert! /Shaft
  14. Thanks for your opinion chas. I like the BB too but my dad hates it! /Shaft
  15. Agreed. Yeah that's why I hang out here more that the SH forums. I just Loooooove the music side most. But have to admit that it's great when the audiophile side goes hand in hand with the music :-) Personal preferences can indeed vary a bit. I can enjoy many different editions of the blue notes and in different setting. Listening to RVG masterings on my portable player is better than on the big rig at home since the treble is a bit rolled off in my earphones and a sharper sound gets more through the ambient noise of being on the go. Same thing with the narrowed stereo spread which can sound just right om earphones..... Talking about good sound on Blue Note if you ever get the chance listen to the Vinyl 45 rpms on Music Matters. Art blakeys drum rolls on Soul Station are almost scary in their realism! I can't imagine even an original pressing sounding any better (I don't own one alas). Having many many blue notes on CD I have gotten into buying some blue notes on vinyl which is very interesting. Original pressing are very expensive but later releases on Liberty etc can indeed sound very satisfactory. And don't get me started on the great cover art :-) Well I'm gliding off topic here
  16. That's a great set! Highly recommended. Good sound Q too. /Shaft
  17. BTW some interesting info about the stereo Blue Notes is that contrary what many believes the stereo tapes that Rudy recorded are really the original masters. When they were issued on the mono LPs they were actually fold downs from the stereo master tapes. It is indicated on the master tapes. Given that information it is indeed a bit strange that the mono LPs are the most collectible if there was issued both a Stereo and Mono edition of the LP. However often the mono edition came before the stereo and is considered the original. Earlier pressings (deep groove, ear etc.) are generally better made though. But if you want to get closest to the master tapes - in these instances - Stereo is the way to go ;-) /Shaft
  18. Hi! I'm a fan of the BN Works series and I agree that they do indeed sound consistent. I've also heard that they are not from the original tapes but I'm not sure. They are not the final word in resolution but the tonal balance is spot on with good bass etc. I think I have around 50 BN Works and have compared them to RVG in several cases. The RVGs are loud, bright and often with narrowed stereo spread (at least the early ones in JPN and US). It got better though. The Macmasters are OK but "thin" in the bass department and a bit "dull" sounding overall. The newer TOCJ series 6XXX and up I'm not that impressed with. They ones I got (around 10) sound generally bright, loud and compressed. Not impressed. If you want the best sounding BLUE note on CD you should look into the recent XRCD24 series. They are mastered with care from the original 2-track analog tapes. The Soul Station XRCD is WAY better than any other issue on CD (even the BN Works). Just fantastic! We are not talking small imoprovement here but better in all respects. I highly recommend this series - just a shame about the price of $30 a piece ;-( /Shaft
  19. I've played the CD a lot But I really prefer the tracks where he does not sing - I think they are really good. What do you guys think of the Baby Breeze? /Shaft
  20. Why are you all so negative? Creed has produced some very good music and took it to the streets. His Impulse stuff was often great and I've never felt that he put down the quality of the music just to sell sell sell. Wes Montomery wanted to eat too and personally I like both his Riverside, Verve and A&M recordings even if they are different. Depending on the mood etc. OK, Creed (together with musicians) created some new amalgams like Getz/Byrd Jazz Samba. Who cares if it's "real bossa" or not - the music is great! Before you bite my head off. I know this is an everlasting topic about jazz's being diluted into soul, R&B, pop, smooth jazz etc. It is a discussion that no one can win. I don't think the jazz scene would be better off without Creed. Only lesser. /Shaft
  21. Yeah I liked the CD in the Duke Pearson incarnation Maybe not essential but very likable. /Shaft
  22. PM on Chet Baker, Boppin' With The Chet Baker Quintet, Prestige, $10 (digipack) /Shaft

  24. I just put the CDs back in the covers after playing them - never any scratches Never use original CDs in the car - burn copies or go the iPod way! /Shaft
  25. Hi, My suggestion is to listen to CDs that you are familiar with and music you love ;-) I mean what are you going to listen to when you have the new equipment home - test CDs??? However: A jazz CD i really like alot and is very well recorded is by Thom Rotella 4-tet. http://www.amazon.com/4-Tet-Thom-Rotella/dp/B000ZJ2ZU4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1289902704&sr=8-2-catcorr He is usually a fusion guy but this is good ol' straight jazz/blues in a mostly acoustic setting (apart from electric guitar) in a Wes Montgomery style. Happy listening! /Shaft
