  1. Thanks for the updates. Has anyone heard the Brann CD? He is a new name to me, but Mark Turner and Gregory Tardy make this a very tempting purchase for me.
  2. Can you clarify or elaborate on the above? Full disclosure - I am involved with one of the organizations that presents two concert series in Hartford. I disclose that just in case my inquiry is taken as defensive (which it is not intended to be). If you feel it is more appropriate, feel free to respond to me privately.

    Marc Cary

The solo Abey Lincoln tribute disc is one of my favorite solo piano recordings.
  10. I heard the band live shortly before they recorded this project. Strong performance and this campaign is worth support.
  11. Most recent record I have of him is performing with the George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band in 2007.
  12. Just read this thread for the first time and succumbed to the impulse to place an order at jazz messengers for: NEW YORK CONTEMPORARY FIVE - CONSEQUENCES TED CURSON - URGE MARION BROWN - JUBA-LEE NEW YORK ART QUARTET -MOHAWK There is a reason I am can never dig myself out of the hole ...
  13. I realize I am the exception, but I think what does not move me about These Arches is indeed some of the ingredients in the mix described by Leeway above. Specifically, the rock aspects simply do not appeal to my sensebilities. I suspect it is just that I do not have a background in listening to rock and never formed an appreciation. I can get with an improvisation/free jazz and compositional approach to music, but all the attempts I have heard by any artist incorporating rock aspects just don't really hold my attention. I should also confess that I have not really been overly impressed with Ches Smith. I have heard him live several times and I just don't get it. But then again, that could also be because I have always heard him as coming from a very rockish approach to the drums. tonight: tomorrow:
  14. I have heard quite a bit of Laubrock - both live and in recordings. As Clifford suggested, I have enjoyed her more in some settings than othes. I loved the Sleepthief trio, but the similarly constructed Paradoxical Frog bored me when I heard them live and on their recordings. I enjoy her work in Tom Rainey's trio and agree that the duo recording on Relative Pitch is strong - even more than I expected it to be. My very best live experiences featuring Laubrock were when she was the featured guest in Joe Morris and Stephen Haynes' Improvisations series in Hartford, and most recently two nights in a row her quintet with Tim Berne, Ben Gerstein, Dan Peck and Tom Rainey.
  15. Sad news. Condolenses and prayers to his family.
  16. I heard These Arches live in June at Firehouse 12. To be honest it did not do a whole heck of a lot for me.
  17. Tonight: Evan Parker | Joe Morris | Nate Wooley at Firehouse 12 in New Haven
  18. Next week is tentatively booked for me. I am taking Wednesday - Thursday off from work for my birthday. If everything works out planning trips into NYC to possibly catch Gary Bartz/Sharel Cassity @ Dizzy's, Steve Coleman @ The Stone and Eric Revis Quartet with Darius Jones and Bill McHenry at the Jazz Gallery.
  19. I fear my man crush on Turner is starting to make me sound like an apologist, but I would not call it a lack of interest. Instead it is a discomfort bordering on social awkwardness. Indeed another musician who did a tour with Turner a few years back told me that Turner is extremely shy. It does not excuse it by any means, but perhaps it adds some explanation? For what it is worth, I was seated next to a bunch of music students and did see them talking to Turner after the show. I only paid $25. In any event, this was my first visit to Regattabar and I generally have a favorable first impression of the venue. Will go back another time when something else of interest is on the calendar. Kevin perhaps next time we can make plans to connect.
  20. Not really disagreeing with you. I drove two hours from CT to attend and was hoping for at least an equal amount of music. I am just saying the quirks did not bother me as much as they understandably did you.
  21. I was there last night. Some "CD Release Party", huh? You would think that announcing a show as a "CD Release Party" you might want to have the CD available for sale? Nope. No CDs for sale at all. Start 20 minutes late? No problem. Leave after an hour and 10 minutes ignoring the crowd (hint: your fans) asking for an encore? No problem. Hang around to sign your new CD at your "CD Release Party"? Huh? What do you mean, "hang around"? We high-tailied it outta there and disappeared. We don't do no stinkin' autographs. All that is true, but the music they did perform was superb IMO. I picked up the CD a couple weeks ago and like it alot. I have heard Mark Turner live many times over the years and he has never been a real "people person". He is far from outgoing. I spoke to him once or twice and and get the sense that he just wants to play his music and nothing else. Nothing mean spirited or necessarily rude. He just seems a bit uncomfortable engaging with strangers. One of my favorite musicians nonetheless.
  22. Mark Turner Quartet @ Regattabar, Cambridge, MA
  23. Over the summer I was at a Ray Mantilla concert where he performed on cajon. Also, the Afro-Peruvian ensemble features a cajon player.
  24. Thanks for these reports. They are inspiring me to make sincere efforts to attend the shows in New Haven and Hartford on Friday and Saturday.
