  1. Zoe Christiansen, who my only exposure to is on one of Allen Lowe's recent recordings is excellent on that recording.
  2. I picked up the Bynum disc from him at his 7-tette performance at Firehouse 12 Friday night. Looking forward to give this a listen.
  3. Tonight: Wadada Leo Smith/Vijay Iyer Duo Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at 8:30PM Bezanson Auditorium Smith-Iyer Duo Seventy-five year old trumpeter and composer Wadada Leo Smith is one of the most influential musicians of our time. Pianist Vijay Iyer describes Smith as his “hero, friend and teacher.” Iyer, a professor in the Department of Music at Harvard University, was named DownBeat Magazine’s 2015 Artist of the Year and 2014 Pianist of the Year. Iyer has played extensively in Smith’s Golden Quartet, but 2016’s A Cosmic Rhythm with Each Stroke is the first documentation of their duo work. 5. I caught Swell Thursday and Friday night, then Pavone Saturday. Unfortunately I could not make Trio 3. Swell was great! The Friday night show may have been just a little better if for no other reason than they played more music. Thursday they played for less than an hour. Friday they played for about 75 minutes. Both nights, however, were strong. They started with a tribute to Connie Crothers, who was supposed to make the gigs with the group. I have been listening to a lot of Steve Swell recently and he is becoming one of my favorite trombone players. Rob Brown, William Parker and Gerald Cleaver were already favorites. Parker and Cleaver at times seemed to have a connection that rivals Parker's relationship with Hamid Drake. This was really displayed at the Friday show. Good stuff. I may try to catch the group with Dave Burrell on piano in October at Roulette. The Pavone nonet was a bit less intense, but still good. Tony Malaby guested on tenor and soprano. He had a couple of arm flapping solos that were a highlight. this group is built around the compositional focus and the accordion. Not as intense and exhilarating experience for me as Steve Swell, but definitely worth driving fifteen minutes from my house for a free concert featuring top of the line musicians.
  6. Steve Swell Quartet @ Hampshire College in Amherst, MA with Rob Brown, William Parker and Gerald Cleaver. Originally it was scheduled to be his Kende's Dreams band with Connie Crothers, but after her passing it was changed to the quartet when neither of his preferred replacements on piano - Dave Burrell or Craig Taborn - were available for the gig. I will likely catch the same quartet tomorrow night in Hartford.
  7. Agreed! I'd buy the book.
  8. Seems like a slightly harsh principle to punish someone for using his name, but I appreciate that the confusion can be frustrating.
  9. I was traveling last week and regret not seeing this until now. I have been to the Falcon before and definitely would have given strong consideration to taking the drive to hear Billy Harper. Would have been a nice way to spend Father's Day.
  10. I have enjoyed many of Mitchell's recordings and live performances. The two recordings by her ensemble Sonic Projections (David Boykin, Craig Taborn, Chad Taylor) on RogueArt - Emerald Hills and The Secret Escapades of Velvet Anderson - are easily recommended, as is the recent Artifacts, which is actually a cooperative recording with Tomeka Reid and Mike Reed. I also really like the Indigo Trio ensemble with Harrison Bankhead and Hamid Drake.
  11. Sad news. I have not investigated his music as thoroughly as I have other artists, but I did appreciate everything I did hear. I was fortunate to hear him live once in 2012 with Joe Morris and Stephen Haynes.
  12. I have the book and have read about half of it. It attempts to be a how to listen for beginners, with a basic explanation of the various things that are happening. I am not sure yet it will have any significant impact on my own listening, but it may be helpful to someone entirely new to the music.
  13. I made it down for the two Saturday performances - Andrew Cyrille, Enrico Rava and William Parker, then the added Cecil performance with Okkyung Lee, Harri Sjöström, Jackson Krall and Tony Oxley (electronics). I also had a ticket for the Friday night when Muntu performed, but regrettably decided not to make the trip down. I'm happy I was able to be a "witness" for the two days I did get down.

  15. The treat for tonight was the Bobby Bradford - Hafez Modirzadeh Quartet with Ken Filiano and Royal Hartigan in Amherst, MA.

You omitted the Ralph Peterson sextet date we caught together at Bohemian Caverns.
  22. For clarification - I have not heard the ECM CD. I heard Avishai perform music from the CD with a quartet at the Winter Jazz Fest. The description of the music from the ECM website as "a programme of expansive and impressionistic compositions" seems appropriate. The music I heard in the concert was not bad. My listening preferences just tend to be closer to music a bit more rough around the edges or less impressionistic. I generally like Avishai Cohen's trumpet playing in the various settings that I have heard him.
  23. I was fortunate to be third in line in back of Mr. Reynolds at the Stone Saturday night, and then a couple seats to his left in the first row for the intense musical experience of Darius Jones' Shades of Black. Darius Jones and Cooper-Moore were everything I expected them to be, but Sam Newsome was a revelation for me. I knew of him and heard some stuff he was on, but this was my first time hearing him live. For someone who first hit the scene as essentially a straight-ahead dude, he has evolved into quite an adventurous player. Very impressive. In addition to Steve, it was also good to see Clifford Allen again. Definitely worth the 2 1/2 hour drive from CT!
