Thanks to "The Kindness of Strangers" (any Spock's Beard fans here? ) I received a CD-R of the Blues for the Fisherman CD today. Woohoo! And it sounds EXCELLENT! This was the last missing major piece of the Art Pepper puzzle within my collection. Time to celebrate! Let's hope someone reissues this soon, possibly as a 2CD version with all eight tracks from the two LPs!

I wouldn't be so sure, after all they seem to be looking for ways to re-package their material in smarter ways (see the new Miles set and the upcoming Coltrane box). And they seem to like compilations (like the Profiles discs). Just come up with a good name for this ("The Lost Treasures" or something) and there you go! How big was your list back then in terms of total playing time?
-
These won't fit on one CD unless you leave off one track (the total playing time for both albums is 87:40). I guess it would make most sense to leave off the long instrumental version of Duke Ellington's Sound of Love since there's a shorter one (with vocals) on the other disc. That way it'd work. But generally I'm with The Magnificent Goldberg here: No tracks should be left behind. Funny enough it was a bunch of those Fantasy twofer reissues (most with missing tracks) that made me think of this thread originally. I wish they'd release a compilation with all those leftover tracks or at least put them on emusic.com.

Didn't quite know where to place this thread but since the subject could also read "2 LP on 1 CD reissues", I just went for this sub-forum. I'm far from an "original LP content" purist (gimme those bonus tracks!) and quite often I like to create my own 2-sessions-on-1-CD-R combos. This is particularly useful "on the road" so I don't have to take as many individual discs with me. Here are a few of my favorites that I feel make a lot of sense. Anyone else do the same? If yes, please post further suggestions! * Elvin Jones - Puttin' it Together/The Ultimate Two trio sessions with Jimmy Garrison and Joe Farrell. I don't understand why Mosaic split the second session over two discs on their Elvin set (which I got last week, thanks take5b! ) * Jimmy Heath - The Quota/Thriple Threat Two sextet dates with the same lineup (but recorded 9 months apart). Freddie Hubbard, Julius Watkins, Cedar Walton, Percy Heath, Tootie Heath. Good stuff! * Dexter Gordon - Go!/A Swingin' Affair Same lineup, recorded just a day or two apart. * Shelly Manne and His Men - At Shelly's Manne-Hole Vol. 1 + 2 A no-brainer. Maybe next time. * Eric Dolphy - Conversations/Iron Man I keep seeing these issued on their own or as a combo but with a track or two missing. They both fit onto one CD nicely. * Eric Dolphy - The Complete Five Spot sessions with Booker Little OK, this is actually a 2CD set. If I remember correctly I had to leave off one alternate take, no big deal. The material here was issued spread over at least four albums. I have a feeling that Concorde is going to correct this mistake pretty soon. and my final combo which some will probably regard as sacrilege: * Miles Davis - Kind of Blue/'58 Sessions featuring Stella by Starlight The '58 studio date produced just 30 minutes of music so it makes sense to combine it with another session to fill up the CD. The original Kind of Blue (without the alternate Flamenco Sketches) fits just fine.

So where should I start? Is any of his stuff on Pablo good for an Ellington newbie? A lot of that is currently on sale at 2001, available for ridiculous €2.99.
-
This is on my long list of EMI/Blue Note CDs that I'll order sometime this year. Should be good. The only Ellington I have so far is the session with Coltrane which I find interesting.

for those who missed out the cheap Universal Mosaics

Yeah, the Rollins Freelance and Monk Prestige sets I saw at their Nuernberg store definitely had the booklet. Looked liked the regular thing, not some leftover discs without anything to go with them. -

No problems with the Woody and the Harold Land but I had to return my copy of Strozier's Long Night. For some reason it started skipping like mad 50 seconds into the 12th track or something. It played fine on my car CD player and another one in the bedroom but not in my main (still pretty new) 5 disc changer in the living room. The replacement copy plays fine on all of them though. Weird. I should note that the disc looked absolutely flawless. -
This is weird, I was never able to find a Japanese edition of Inner Space or Tones at all. Thanks for the hint though, maybe I'll get this edition in my next life or something!
-
It's ridiculous how they reissued this stuff. There's still no single-disc version of the album that contains the entire session, I had to burn myself a CD-R of it. There IS a newer reissue of Tones but it does not contain the two extra tracks from Inner Space while the Inner Space CD lacks two cuts from the original Tones LP. Idiots! Other than that it's a great session! And at least that Tyner/Hancock/Corea/Jarrett disc that's needed to complete the whole programme includes two piano trio tracks from Coltrane's My Favorite Things sessions that I haven't seen anywhere else so far.
-
OK, OK, I got it! I'll just settle for the two additional tracks from the original Smithville session then!
-
Oops. Didn't know that, it's hard to find information on that release and obviously I haven't heard it myself yet. Thanks!

Another European taking full advantage of the 2001 sale... My major find so far: McCoy Tyner - ALL of his Milestone albums. Awesome! Some amazingly powerful stuff.

Thanks. I'd browsed through the "Jazz-Reste" list earlier and didn't see anything new. Didn't realize the full jazz CD list might include more of those titles. Thankfully (at least from my wallet's point of view) the Chet is the only disc I hadn't already seen and/or bought at the local 2001 store today. But I really need this album (got the other two already). I guess it's just a matter of time until the OTHER Jaki Byard quartet disc with Joe Farrell shows up. That's one of the few releases that I'm really looking forward to (as well as a bunch of Bill Evans albums that'll finally complete my collection of his works for Riverside and Fantasy). And of course the Joe Henderson Milestone Years box... -

Excellent, thanks! How did you find this? I seem to have tried everything but didn't stumble across this album. The sort function doesn't seem to work as it's supposed to (listing freshly added items first or last). -
I don't know how I did it but I just resisted temptation AGAIN. I have the J.J. Inc. CD and it never really grabbed me (neither did the two Eminent volumes on Blue Note). So the only reason why I would be interested in this set are the sidemen and that's just not enough at a price point of $142 (including shipping to Germany). Wheh! ... keeps mumbling "I don't need another six hours of trombone jazz" ...
-
Yeah, I wonder why they still haven't reissued Cosmic Music over here. The unedited and non- overdubbed tracks from that session (some also issued on "Infinity" I think) would be great to have.
-
Didn't even notice that. Actually it's "Burnett".
-
Those extra tracks are taken from the other Milcho Leviev quartet disc on Mole called True Blues. As I said, unfortunately the CD doesn't contain all of the two LPs.
-
I wish I could obtain a CD version of this, it's impossible to find. The CD also includes some more tracks from the other Milcho Leviev album with Art Pepper (from the same sessions) - unfortunately not all of them.

While amazon.com lists three (!) different Japanese CD issues of this album, it still hasn't been released on CD in the US and Europe. With a lineup like this I find this hard to understand: Louis Smith (tp) Charlie Rouse (ts) Sonny Clark (p) Paul Chambers (b) Art Taylor (d) Rudy Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, NJ, March 30, 1958 tk.1 Tunesmith (Bakin') Blue Note (J) BNJ 61008/10 tk.8 There Will Never Be Another You Blue Note BLP 1594 tk.11 Au Privave Blue Note (J) BNJ 61008/10 tk.13 Smithville Blue Note 45-1715, BLP 1594 tk.16 Embraceable You Blue Note BLP 1594 tk.17 Later - tk.18 Wetu - * Louis Smith - Smithville (Blue Note BLP 1594) * Various Artists - The Other Side Blue Note 1500 Series (Blue Note (J) BNJ 61008/10) Of course I could just buy one of the Japanese editions but that would mean missing out on two additional tracks from the session that weren't on the LP. Also as a suggestion for Blue Note (anyone know how to contact them these days? The old customer contact page has been removed from bluenote.com) I think this album would be a the best place to include the remaining two tracks from the "Young Men from Memphis - Down Home Reunion" album, the other two of which were included on the "Booker Little 4 & Max Roach" CD. Both Little and Smith were featured on those tracks and none of the other guys has a CD on Blue Note or any of its sub-labels AFAIK. Here's the session info for that one: Booker Little, Louis Smith (tp) Frank Strozier (as) George Coleman (ts) Phineas Newborn Jr. (p) Calvin Newborn (g) George Joyner (b) Charles Crosby (d) Olmsted Studios, NYC, 1958 or early 1959 Things Ain't What They Used to Be United Artists UAL 4029, Blue Note CDP 7 84457 2 Blue 'n' Boogie - After Hours United Artists UAL 4029 Star Eyes - * Young Men from Memphis - Down Home Reunion (United Artists UAL 4029, UAS 5029) * Booker Little 4 & Max Roach (Blue Note CDP 7 84457 2)

To contradict the above answer, it's NOT part of the Mosaic Select set.

Our forum colleague John (couw) made some booklets for the ZYX/Fantasy box sets with the complete discographical info. They can be printed and folded to fit the boxes: http://mitglied.lycos.de/couw/Documents/ Thanks, but the small booklet does in fact include that kind of info. My complaint being that it contains nothing else than that. Even the small ZYX version of the Miles Prestige set had comments for every session (even though they were very hard to read due to the tiny font size).
-
I might consider my old box and getting the new one if the sound is indeed improved. So far I only have the cheap ZYX edition with the ridiculously small booklet that has just the basic session info.

Duke Pearson's "Wahoo", forgotten masterpiece?
Kyo replied to Soul Stream's topic in Recommendations
It's a great album, I'm really glad I managed to get a CD rather cheap when it was already OOP.
