Hey, just be happy it didn't list Herbie Handcock and Booby Hutcherson among the players.

EDIT: My mistake. Oops, I just realized that Blumenthal merely claims that K Twist was recorded AGAIN nearly two years later. So it IS from the original '63 session after all. Guess I'm just easily confused. But then the RVG giving a completely wrong recording date for the entire session doesn't help...
-
I just noticed that a recording of K Twist was included as a bonus track on the Midnight Blue RVG. It seems to be from this session. Huh?! No discographical info for this track is given except for a sentence in Blumenthal's "A New Look At ..." essay which claims it was recorded almost two years later on a session designed to produce material for release on 45. To make things even worse the RVG claims Midnight Blue was recorded on April 21, 1967 - wasn't that sometime in early '63? That would also explain the "almost two years later" comment. It doesn't make much sense that Blumenthal also mentions the addition of Herbie Hancock on piano (which is true for the rest of the Freedom session) when he doesn't play on K Twist. Once again I find myself very confused by a Blue Note release.

Excellent, thanks for the information!

Noooo! Not another one! Just got my copy, listening to it via headphones. Doesn't sound too bad, really.
-
Well, they DID get it right on the tray card. The mistake is just in the booklet. Who knows what they'll use to determine where to send royalties. But seriously, how can stuff like this happen at all?
-
What do you mean "still"? The original notes are included in the new RVG booklet before the usual Bob Blumenthal essay that puts the album into a historical perspective.
-
That's not so easy as Blue Note decided to take down all contact data and the old "product suggestions/feedback" form from their website at some point. Same here. I got the European version and except for the Donald Byrd mistake mentioned the booklet is fine. Which reminds me that I should try to get a replacement for my misprinted Out To Lunch booklet at some point...

I thought that they had finally found the time to catalog all those ZYX titles instead of just throwing them into the bargain bins. At least that would explain why so many of those made it into their "official" programme a few weeks ago. We'll just have to see if more of those show up.
-
I have to correct myself, I was at their Nuernberg store yesterday and all Atlantics seemed to be Digipack editions. No new Fantasy/ZYX titles this time around, I wonder if the sale has ended? Or maybe they'll add another bunch of those inbetween two "Merkhefts". Speaking of which, the new one is already printed and available and the search function finds all the new stuff now.

Same here, I didn't really know much about these guys back when the Mosaic sets were available and I'm very happy to see most of the material out on individual discs already. Now if they manage to get High Frequency out within the next two or three Connoisseur sets that would be awesome! Reinier, if you're in contact with Cuscuna please do me (and probably many other people as well) a favor and ask him to finally put out an RVG of Bobby Hutcherson's Total Eclipse. I've been trying to find the original CD version of it at a reasonable price for over a year (on eBay and amazon marketplace) to no avail. There seems to be quite a demand for it!

Oh, I do have THAT one and love most of it. I was talking about the new Select of Hill solo piano performances that is coming out in October if I'm not mistaken. That stuff has never been out on CD. The only other Hill I don't have yet is the early "So In Love" album (just a matter of time though) and some Baba Russell album in which case I have no idea where I might get that from. Nah, let's leave that to Cuscuna. He'll give it a new title for sure since the track Involution from the old LP set isn't part of the session that'll be on the CD. But if we make up a name of our own it'll just be more confusing in the end.
-
Excellent news! Only one to go after that and I'll have all Hill (except the new Mosaic Select) on CD! And thanks in advance for the Smith update!

Has anyone done business with the CdJapan web-store?
Kyo replied to Dmitry's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I can recommend both CDJapan and Early Records (Hiroshi) -
They seem to be selling Atlantics of both varieties. Nice to see the Mulligan/Baker Carnegie Hall disc for 3.99. I've been wanting to buy that for ages!
-
Can you also check when we can expect Louis Smith's "Smithville" with the two extra tracks from those sessions on CD? Original thread here
-
Sounds nice. The search function doesn't find those yet, unfortunately. I'll have to grab the Sony discs that I don't have yet (especially the CTIs). Damn! I really want that! I wonder if they'll add dozens of Fantasy Jazz €2.99 titles to their programme AGAIN come September. This sale is great but at some point I'll go broke buying all that stuff.
-
Those weren't RVGs, they were Connoisseurs, and yes - no copy protection on those either. It was the first batch in years that came out here without it.
-
Usually that's acceptable but if they stretch the set by including a readily available RVG (that most Willette fans will probably have bought long ago) it'll feel pretty bad. You said someone (me) had just made stuff up. Now the Argo bit may indeed be a case of misinterpretation (Mosaic's own fault if it is though) but the "late '07" plan is anything but an "assumption".
-
Possible. But the BN material barely exceeds two discs even if you include both the Donaldson AND the Green. There's like 95 minutes of BFW leader stuff and 80 minutes of him as a sideman. I don't quite see why he would even consider releasing a full three-disc Select in that case when even including a readily available RVG disc the whole thing would hardly fill those discs to start with.

Thanks for calling me a liar but my mailbox tells me something else "first hand".

Andre 3000 of OutKast to "rework" Kind Of Blue
Kyo replied to trane_fanatic's topic in Miscellaneous Music
If reworking those old recordings isn't "looking back at his old stuff" then what is? -
They have confirmed this set so it seems they found a way to get past this.
-
I forgot that one, thanks for reminding me. Unlike the others Fried Buzzard is out on CD and it's a live recording, so I excluded that one. Would be interesting to see if they could fit all seven of those on three CDs.

The whole situation reminds me of what happened with "Motion" by Lee Konitz. There was the first CD edition with three bonus tracks (adding up to a total of eight), then the expanded 3 disc box with eight and a half tracks (one aborted take) from the session (plus two discs of other material) and now all they're offering is a CD with just the original five LP tracks. I ended up buying the new Japanese edition which sounds great and has eight tracks.
