  1. Yeah, that's why I suggested to turn this into a Mosaic Select - it might all just fit onto three discs. And who knows how much of it really IS usable...
  2. Since this was a live recording and not a studio date session it's safe to say that those will rather not be false starts or incomplete takes - they're probably complete performances. As for the "not yet on CD" discussion above, there's one more album: Jimmy Smith Trio + LD hasn't been released outside of Japan yet (if that, I remember hearing about a Japanese CD but I'm not quite sure).
  3. I think it's awesome that Straight Life finally sees the light of day and I never thought there might be more Jimmy Smith coming out this year. But maybe in 2008... jazzdisco.org lists a plethora of other titles recorded at Club Baby Grand, hardly any alternate takes. I don't know if those sound good enough to release them, but it's certainly possible. It doesn't seem like the band were trying to nail any tunes in particular, leading me to believe that there is no significant drop in quality from the released tracks to the so far unissued material. But who knows, even with good performances there might be something wrong with the sound.
  4. So what's stopping you?
  5. Hiromi Uehara's new album won't be released as a regular Hiromi disc, but rather under the Hiromi's Sonicbloom moniker. The difference to her last two albums - both pure trio affairs - is the addition of (fretless) electric guitarist Dave Fiuczynski whom you may or may not know from his band Screaming Headless Torsos. Dave has played with Hiromi before, adding some really wacky stuff to the lengthy Double Personality on her debut CD Another Mind some four years ago. It should be interesting to hear him fully integrated into the band for an entire album. Once again the band also includes bassist Tony Grey and drummer Martin Valihora. 1. Time Difference 6:19 2. Time Out 6:39 3. Time Travel 8:37 4. Deep into the Night 9:02 5. Real Clock vs. Body Clock = Jet Lag 5:53 6. Time and Space 7:56 7. Time Control or Controlled by Time 8:29 8. Time Flies 8:01 9. Time's Up 0:46 10. Note from the Past (Japanese bonus track) 12:08 Total playing time: 73:50 Samples of all tracks can be found here: http://www.telarc.com/Jazz/title.asp?sku=C...B5E3C0G95RV41D7 Judging by those this should be interesting! The album will be out in late March in the US and Europe and has already been released in Japan - I'm awaiting my copy any day now and will post my impressions once it's in my hands. For those interested in buying the album, the import CD has one bonus track called Note from the Past (an all new studio track). EDIT: Added track listing.

    RVGs

Time to dig up this thread as I'm still looking for more Jimmy Smith that I don't have on CD yet... According to jazzdisco.org there was a lot of music recorded with hardly any tune played twice. That would make a nice extended/complete multi-disc set. I just realized that if a lot of that material is usable, this could make a great Mosaic Select set!
  7. I grabbed mp3s of two Jody Grind tracks (sourced from a BN Silver compilation, not the album itself) from the net and to my surprise they sound just as bad as my CD, including the obvious distortion or whatever it is around 0:13. Guess I'm keeping the disc after all. Meh.
  8. While browsing the Blue Note discography for Jimmy Smith recordings that I didn't have yet I realized that there's an excellent twofer waiting to happen lying around in the BN vaults. Check this out: Jimmy Smith Trio Jimmy Smith (org) Eddie McFadden (g) Donald Bailey (d) Manhattan Towers, NYC, May 8, 1957 tk.3 I Can't Get Started BLP 1563 04:48 tk.5 The Very Thought Of You - 04:29 tk.6 Autumn In New York - 04:24 tk.10 Somebody Loves Me Blue Note (J) TOCJ 1612 05:40 tk.12 Old Devil Moon BLP 1563 05:42 tk.16 East Of The Sun - 06:06 tk.17 Penthouse Serenade - 05:29 tk.18 Jitterbug Waltz - 04:57 tk.20 The Nearness Of You - 05:44 * Jimmy Smith - Plays Pretty Just For You (Blue Note BLP 1563, BST 81563) * Jimmy Smith - Cherokee (Blue Note (J) TOCJ 1612) Jimmy Smith Trio Jimmy Smith (org) Eddie McFadden (g) Donald Bailey (d) Manhattan Towers, NYC, July 3, 1957 tk.? That would even leave some space to possibly include some of the extra tracks from the July session. What do you think? I know I'd buy that without thinking twice! Anyone here with the connections to suggest something like this to Cuscuna? EDIT: I just sent a message suggesting this and a "Club Baby Grand" Jimmy Smith Mosaic Select via the Mosaic website. It should reach Cuscuna that way, right?
  9. Yeah, I noticed the distortion as well.
  10. That would be nice! I have Stanley Turrentine's Let It Go (which includes a few tracks from a Shirley Scott solo album) and Queen of the Organ but there's a lot more that has yet to be released on CD.
  11. Thanks for sharing that story! I just ordered the disc, sounds interesting. I'm not really familiar with Jimmy Forrest's playing but I love your drumming with Organissimo and Shirley Scott is one of my favorite organists, so this should be good!
  12. Thanks! I hope I'll hear back from the store (an amazon marketplace seller) soon. Oh well, it's not like I suffer from lack of new music, quite the opposite actually.
  13. As I said, the disc looks perfect. I'm pretty sure that any attempt to clean it would make it look worse - and then I wouldn't be able to return it as easily.
  14. You can order them from www.hmv.co.jp. There seem to be both TOCJ and JRVG editions out there.
  15. I got Bucket just yesterday and I have to agree with CJ, it does seem pretty boring so far.
  16. It's much more obvious than that with my copy. The first track about 13 seconds in is really bad for example (right when Horace hits that chord going into the fifth bar). It sounds more like a digital flaw than an LP source issue to me, but I'm far from an expert on such matters.
  17. Kevin Bresnahan has proven to be a reliable source for all things Blue Note (including inside information) over the years. Although of course he might just be confusing the album with something else. I fear I'll have to return that disc to the seller after all.
  18. Sure: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...st&p=474080 Maybe there's still hope...
  19. Heh, maybe I should've looked a bit longer before posting the question. While I didn't find anything on alt.music.blue-note, an organissimo search via google brought me to the claim that the album is simply mastered from an LP - that would explain a lot. I wonder why they didn't mention any of this anywhere in the liner notes.
  20. Hi there, today I finally got my copy of Horace Silver's The Jody Grind - I've been meaning to order this album for years. My copy is officially used but looks perfect. Unfortunately it sounds terrible, there is clicking all over the left channel. I've tried the disc in a PC DVD drive and my CD changer at home and the problem was present on both. Is this a known issue? Did they ever replace copies of this album or is this problem present on all CDs available (I can't imagine, it really is quite annoying)? Maybe I'll just have to return this one disc and get a replacement, but as I said - it does look good as new! - Michael
  21. That "no more JOS" comment was a joke. There's a Jimmy Smith session scheduled for June as part of the upcoming Connoisseur Edition batch. Oh, and they can't really call a compilation of the remaining Sermon/House Party tracks Confirmation any more as that track was added to the House Party RVG.
  22. But wasn't that the only case when they did something like this? The Sounds of Jimmy Smith is out already and it does contain all the otherwise missing tracks. They could sell the RVGs as "Complete" editions including two full albums each without having to change the track order or leave off individual tracks as was the case with The Sermon/House Party.
  23. I just realized that I'll probably end up getting all of those. Nice batch, Smithville or no Smithville.
  24. I think so, but if I were to go the JRVG route, I'd end up having to pay for four discs. I'm hoping that the US/Europe editions will compile the remaining material onto just two discs.
  25. I just noticed that while The Sounds of Jimmy Smith with all the extra tracks from those sessions has recently been reissued as an RVG edition, the four remaining albums from that time have yet to come out on CD outside of Japan (or a Mosaic set). The "Date" and "... at the Organ" material should fit on one CD each nicely and I know I'd be picking up both of those ASAP once they're released. Does anyone know when this material will get the RVG treatment? It seems odd for Blue Note to RVG the less obvious material from those sessions first...
