So was there an earlier edition of the Burrell disc with bonus tracks or are we talking about "potential" bonus tracks that might or might not be releasable?
-
Thanks! Guess I'm pretty sensitive to these things. No biggie really, just wanted to make sure it's not just my copy.
-
I'm currently really enjoying the early Prestige sides and my French CD of "The Master". I didn't know about this West Coast Sessions set, just ordered a copy. Thanks for mentioning it!

Is there an ugly edit in Prime Rib around 1:56 or is something wrong with my CD?
-
Are her early Savoy recordings worth getting? There are two official compilations out there that cover most of the stuff.

Since I just went over all the tracks out of my own interest I'll give you a quick rundown: Disc 1 tracks 1-3: no idea Disc 1 tracks 4-9: Available on the Capitol CD "Birth of the Cool Vol. 2" along with eight tracks by Gerry Mulligan's Tentet and two by the Metronome All-Stars featuring Miles Davis. Also part of the Shorty Rogers Mosaic set. Disc 1 tracks 10-18: Available on the Xanadu CD "Shorty Rogers/Art Pepper - Popo". Disc 2 track 1: Available on the Contemporary Records CD "Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All-Stars Vol. 3", note that three other tracks from that session and several more from that album are missing here! Disc 2 tracks 2-3: no idea Disc 2 tracks 4-11: Available on the RCA CDs "Shorty Rogers and His Giants" and "Short Stops" Disc 2 tracks 12-19: Available on the RCA CDs "Shorty Rogers Express", "Cool and Crazy" and "Short Stops" Disc 2 track 20: no idea (some live bootleg?) Disc 3 tracks 1-2: no idea (some live bootleg?) Disc 3 tracks 3-6: Available on the RCA CD "Short Stops" and possibly on the soundtrack CD for that movie (forgot its name) Disc 3 tracks 7-18: Available on the RCA CD "Shorty Rogers Courts the Count" Disc 4 tracks 1-8: Available on the RCA CD "Shorty Rogers/Andre Previn - Collaboration" Disc 4 tracks 9-12: Available on the RCA CD "Shorty Rogers and His Giants" Disc 4 tracks 13-15: Available on the RCA CD "Al Cohn/Shorty Rogers - East Coast/West Coast Scene" along with three more tracks by Al Cohn's group. Disc 4 tracks 16-19: Available on the RCA CD "Shorty Rogers/Andre Previn - Collaboration" Disc 4 track 20: Leftover from the above session, no idea where it might be available from RCA. I'm tempted. I have the Capitol CD, "Popo" and the "Giants" disc but nothing featuring the bigger ensembles. I think this would be a stronger set if they'd concentrated on the RCA material. Most of that is out of print and pretty hard to get for a decent price these days.

The Savoy compilation is great (and complete). I got the "Sittin' In With" material on a CD called "A Look at Yesterday" from Mainstream Records, but that one's hard to find. I think it's the only legitimate CD release of those tracks though. The disc also includes some tunes featuring Wardell Gray, John Hardee (both backed by Al Haig like Getz) and a Paul Quinichette session. I think Definitive Records compiled the Getz and Gray stuff together with some of the Prestige sides on a CD called "Al Haig Meets the Master Bop Saxes"

Those early Getz sides for Prestige are great! Early Stan is the only one still missing from my collection. Make sure you get the Al Haig Trio / Sextets disc (now out of print) and the "Brothers" Getz/Sims disc, too.

Anyone know where I can find a copy of 1984 on CD?
-
Cool, thanks! I'll try to find that Capitol Innovations Orchestra set, I prefer their liner notes to the Classics releases I have so far. Not quite sure which way to go with the 40s stuff. The Classics discs aren't as cheap or as easily available as I'd like them to be and while Definitive Records has put most of the Mosaic set out (as a 4 disc "master takes" and a 2 disc "transcriptions" set) in comprehensive form, I remember the few Definitive releases that I got early on having really lousy annotation (if any at all). And with as much music as this, I'd rather have something good to read about it while listening for the first few times. The two "Concepts" CDs mentioned earlier, Kenton Showcase and Easy Go will probably follow soon.

Huh? Where does it say so on their site? I just checked and they still say they'll ship their stuff to almost anywhere in the world (yes, including even Europe).

Current trend: selling original CDs but keeping the mp3s
Kyo replied to Kyo's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Either way you push 11 CDs in excellent condition into the second hand market that will possibly be bought instead of new copies (as they're almost as good but cheaper), thus hurting the artists and the producer after all. And the copies the guy from the original example keeps are definitely illegal. -
Thanks everyone! Those are some very helpful suggestions. I just ordered the album of Graettinger pieces, it just sounded too tempting (the amazon samples convinced me to go ahead). As for the others, I'm trying to find an affordable copy of the Innovations Orchestra two-fer and will probably grab some of the other CDs mentioned soon. But before I do that I need to know: Is the Kenton Holman/Russo Mosaic still worth tracking down or can those tracks be found on individual releases? I haven't managed to find a tracklisting for the Mosaic set to confirm that myself.

I'm no lawyer, but I'd guess it's stated in the same place where you can find the permission to even make that "copy for personal use", no? They don't put that on the CDs either. -

Buying a music CD means buying the rights to use the music contained therein and not just buying the actual disc. You can make copies of the music to various formats for your own personal use as long as you own those rights. By selling the CD, you also sell those rights and every other copy that you keep becomes illegal. When you buy digital downloads, you only buy the rights to use those files. You are not allowed to sell those rights or the file. It's all in the iTunes small print. It's all quite simple really. -
I'm hoping for affordable "Complete Riverside" Bill Evans and Wes Montgomery sets...

Current trend: selling original CDs but keeping the mp3s
Kyo replied to Kyo's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Yeah, they're mostly encoded at 128k VBR. But that's not much better and still far from really good. -
I've become interested in some of Stan Kenton's music (I'm currently reading Ted Gioia's West Coast Jazz) and I wonder how this music has been released on CD - I know there were at least two Mosaic sets and a bunch of Capitol compilations of various sorts (City of Glass, The Innovations Orchestra...), but I guess there must be some overlap there. So which discs / sets should I be looking at? One thing to keep in mind: I don't mind difficult music as long as it's rewarding, so I'm not really looking for an "easy introduction" greatest hits package - in fact the one CD of Bob Graettinger tunes sounds very interesting to me...

Yes, the "legally" part here very much applies. An mp3 of a CD that you sold is an illegal copy, period. -

I got most of those 128k files quite recently, so it seems in many cases they just haven't bothered to upgrade those files. Knowing that it can take them over a year to replace a faulty mp3 with a flawless one I'm not surprised. Going back to the original discussion, I don't have a problem with mp3s and iPods myself - I actually use both quite extensively. It's the selling and STILL USING of music that I have a problem with. And the worst about this problem is not even that the above behaviour is getting popular, it's the fact that people don't see anything wrong with it at all. -

Me too, at least to some extent - I've been re-buying many of the OJCs that have gone out of print recently. Many of those are only available in rather lousy 128kbps quality from eMusic (where I got them initially) and I really prefer to have the liner notes available when listening to the music. -
So I can't find this CD anywhere because such dimwits bought all the remaining copies?
-
Before I go into this rant let me state that yes, I do own the occasional CD-R of an album that has gone out of print and can't be easily bought. So I'm no saint. But it really pisses me off to see people sell their CDs and publicly state that they're happy just having the mp3s they made off the discs. WTF?! Either you own the discs and are free to use those mp3s you made yourself or those files are as good (or rather as bad) as any pirated mp3 you got off the net. Some examples: http://cgi.ebay.com/Clifford-Brown-The-Com...1QQcmdZViewItem "I'm putting all my CDs on my computer (and my iPod) and selling off the albums themselves." http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/B...9174&sr=1-1 "used once to rip to I-pod" I'm really no friend of the RIAA, but in these cases I wish someone would give those guys' asses a good spanking (and a nice $$$ fine to go with it).

This is on the way to me as we speak. Should be good! Too bad the DVD only includes a duet performance of Spain and not a whole set. Seems like some Japanese online stores were misinformed. I just got the set and according to the packaging the DVD includes not only Spain but the following tracks: 1. Fool on the Hill 2. Concierto de Aranjuez / Spain Haven't watched it yet...

Elvin Jones and Gerry Mulligan CJB in "Running Low"!
Kyo replied to Ron S's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
$68 sounds good for an out of print Mosaic, but I got a copy of this set for less than 20 Euro from eBay last week.
