  1. "I don't know if anyone remembers the very first Saturday Night Live when Kaufman did his Mighty Mouse skit." Sure do. I still think it's great. Just think if he, Robin Williams, and Tim Conway had done some sketches.
  2. That's it? Nobody knows of Shirley Rogers? I thought the word Google sounded sexual so I made a joke. I'm not the first. BTVS used it too, in season seven I believe. Just looked through the thread again to find some info on VI Red, like how to spell her name. Google found nothing for - "Vi Red" sax - but did suggest Red Sox.
  3. Oh boy! Another Sonny to add to my sax list. That makes eight.
  4. Shirley Rogers played some very good piano in San Francisco in 1966. Anyone heard her since then? If you Google her (she is over 18) you will find High School band recordings of Jon Faddis and Mel Martin. Jon burned in HS!
  5. Vince Wallace has written good unique tunes that are fun to play. Howard Small wrote many good jazz tunes that were respected by people who played them.
  6. I also had that "Jazz at a Perfume Counter". Forgot all about it. That was a good record. Had a mellophone or french horn solo on it, right? Did it also have "Balcony Rock"? That has a fantastic Desmond blues solo.
  7. "There was a second one called "A Handful of Modern Jazz." Yes, I had that one too. A very good sampler! "The Red Norvo/Parker/Gillespie sides were also on one of the two. " Yes the Gillespie one was great. Had small group and big band tracks. On Crown: Did you have the two (rare) Coleman Hawkins records with Thad Jones and Eddie Costa? The jam sessions by GNP? The nice dates by Gerald Wiggins and Sonny Criss? Wardell Graw and Dextor? live concert. I think there was a Chico Hamilton Quintet one. Very good too. Definitely Fred Katz and maybe Paul Horn on that one. I can't recall the others right now. "Score a big one for the supermarket labels!" Indeed. There were very good jazz records for $1.49 at Ralph's Supermarket. I bought tracks of the Duke Ellington (a famous jazz musician) 1940s band with Blanton for that price. Played it many many times. Booker Little's Time... LP. Don't remember the others. Some MetroJazz (?) records. Recorded on 35mm film instead of magnetic tape.
  8. "The first reissue of Charlie Parker's "Dial" material (I think, correct me if I'm remembering this wrong) was around 1960, on something called "Baronet."" That's the copy I had. It may have been called "The Early Bird" and had two back to back altos on the cover. or was it front to front? I played it hundreds of times, I guess.
  9. Shrink wrapping is a bad idea for records. Too tight - It warps them. Esp. if exposed to heat/sunlight. They were plastic film sealed and had an 88 cent round sticker. They lasted quite well. I played the hell out of them. Some were mono, some were stereo. I did not have a fancy light "tonearm". They also were played on mechanical trip end of play record players that often would wear the grooves near the end of play. I used to service these things.
  10. I used to play "Cloudy" by Coleman Hawkins. I still think it's a swingin' fun tune. Kind of a Honeysuckle Rose with a unique bridge.
  11. In the early 1960s I lived in Van Nuys, Ca. and bought about 10 Crown albums from Ralph's Market for 88 cents each. They were all good jazz music! Most were re-issues of other west coast labels. They were very weak on information but a hell of a bargain for a young teen.
  12. Here is a link to a friend's site who has posted about Benny's 100 mark. http://brunoleichtsoldandnewswingindreams....-100-years.html
  13. It won't always be easy to know if someone has composed much or not. Some of Ellington's men should have been given at least co-composer credit for some of the band's material.
  14. It's great that you found these records and have the cash to indulge your hobby which you are obviously passionate about. I would like to hear most of those records.
  15. I wondered about Oscar. Anyone got the facts? How about Terry Gibbs? Pops Foster :-)
  16. Getz wrote a good blues :-) Pepper may not have been prolific but he wrote good tunes.
  17. "The Happy Bird" may not have really inspired Bird but the Wardell Gray solos are a real treat. It is a record worth having. To be a completest, you would also want to have the Dean Benedetti Bird recordings. http://jazzinchicago.org/educates/journal/...-charlie-parker
  18. Here's what I would like to find. Dick Grove Orchestra: Little Bird Suite http://www.spiralvinyl.com/product/product12346903 You are actively looking for records and may find it some day.
  19. I don't feel like reading the list again. Did we include Pat Patrick, bari sax Conti Condoli (I would think so) Buster Bailey (sp?) clarinet

  24. Doug Sides has been in Europe at least since 1991. First in Holland and now in Germany, I believe. A wonderful and versatile musician and a fine gentleman.
