#10 is by an obscure L.A.tenor play who put out a great album.  #3 is by a guy who is QUITE well-known on this board, and there is not a vibes player on the album.  surprised no one has figured it out.

Any Tapscott connection (some degrees of separation allowed) for the obscure LA tenor player in #10? With a single 1996 release as leader, nothing is immediately apparent.

If it's too much of a spoiler, feel free to disregard the question. 😉

I'm in, eventually.  I own these already, but like the mastering and packaging on these sets.

I finally went for this via Amazon, combining it with another (non-music) purchase. Had been bummed by the disappearance of an illusory ultra-cheap importcds "preorder" price.

I'm going to take my chances and still get this in January or early February.  I just got a little bigger size order than usual from Dusty a few days ago (just my luck).

I'm optimistic because there are quite a number of BBE jazz-reissue titles that have stayed available on Dusty's site for more than two years -- so I'm hoping I'll be safe waiting just another month or so.  If not, I'm sure I can track one down one way or another -- but I do think they'll still be coming up on Dusty's site -- brand new -- for most of 2024, if not even 2025.

[Emphasis added] DG marks down some unsold BBE CDs to $9.99 after a while. In a Panglossian scenario you could get that deal. 😉, but I decided to preorder.

  4. What little I know about Raymond Scott pertains to electronic music.

One of his pieces was included in the OHM: The Early Gurus of Electronic Music compilation.

  5. I received the Heining today. Excellent book, well put together and in nice big print (I guess JIB know their target demographic 😅). Starting with the Barry Guy section since I've been listening to a lot of his music lately, finding it very informative.

Agreed with previous comments. CDs nice though not audiophile quality. I found Heining's prose in the Introduction a tad on the precious side, but less so in the text proper.

Agreed it looks great, and agreed I'm not likely to ever pick it up due to cost and capacity (too many CD's/books/movies, too little space/time, money supply is finite).

Yeah, I've been trying to downsize (apart from CD buying) and coffee-table size books don't really fit into the scheme.

I did order Duncan Heining's And Did Those Feet (it's en route) due to reasonable (DG) price and inclusion of 2 CDs, but don't know what I'll do with the book after reading it. 🤔

    Looks very interesting.

Hopefully, Dusty will stock it, since shipping is $38 from the UK to the US.

I'm getting mixed signals from DG on this and other BBE items. The Waldron/Hino Reminiscent Suite recording and this book (thanks, Rooster) both show as "Coming Soon", but preorder is not available.

I really prefer the preorder option, because I can't count the number of times I've clicked on a DG "arrival notice" and been greeted with "Just Sold Out!" 😧

  8. Excellent! Based on felser's response to Thom I had guessed the altoist in #4, but was too lazy to sleuth/verify and it's too early in the month for that anyway. Don't mind reading the IDs...not really spoilers because I wasn't going to get them; Elvin-ness of #2 and Dolphy-ism of #3 not enough to narrow down the candidates.

FWIW I enjoy the semi-non-quasi jazz excursions.

[Added] Based on Jim's ID, #4 must be this. Weirdly, that's from a recording I recently came very close to buying, but held off on because I prefer the altoist's earlier work. 🙄

In the "minimalist" area, Marion Brown collaborated with Harold Budd. I think the first recording of Budd's Bismillahi 'Rahmani 'Rrahim is on MB's Vista (a personal favorite album on which Budd performed). And Brown played on Budd's The Pavilion of Dreams album. Excellent book and 2CDs of music (which was new to me - rare broadcasts). I believe the original print run is now sold out but Amazon will be doing print on demand, without the CDs.

I preordered from Dusty Groove, which is much cheaper US shipping, and got filled yesterday. Perhaps they have a few copies...I haven't checked, but they don't usually get large quantities of such things "Just Sold Out".
