  1. Fair. Maybe it's the messiness that I like, but what a fascinating mess to get to hear genius in transformation. What a treat those RCA's and Impulse!'s are to allow us to look inside; to get a glimpse inside the evolving mind of Sonny Rollins; and I happily accept that invitation.
  2. Wow. Second RCA. My favorite Sonny Rollins Chapter.
  3. You're probably right, but I haven't because I do not subscribe to Spotify, and my computer doesn't have the greatest listening phonics, but I do have a pretty good sound system to play CDs, and I can probably tweak the bass if needed. I am pretty excited about this release, so I don't want to spoil the listening experience; and I've avoided hearing snippets, tracks on YouTube, etc. I have a feeling I will not be returning it, when it's delivered to my house. 🙂
  4. Unique sound, he had. Science Fiction blew me away for many reasons, but the bonus material on the expanded CD edition was really a bonus!
  5. Trane-Live at the Half Note, disc one-Impulse! What a terrific sleeve, never saw it before.
  6. And when he does, I'm so glad he did. One of my favorite drummers.
  7. Wow! Track one? That bass line he builds is almost like what you would hear on a Marion Brown ESP album. Don't have the cd in front of me, but Haden is all over Orgasm. But, before then, when I turned into a true Charlie Haden listener, was Ornette's This Is Our Music; it blew me away for one reason: Charlie Haden. I love the sleeve too, where everyone (except Ed Blackwell) looks effing badass serious.
  8. Ornette-This is our Music- Atlantic
  9. Really liked Flowers for Albert, but just lost sight of his music after that, especially the Grateful Dead stuff. Great talent, though.
  10. Ornette on Tenor- Atlantic
  11. Any Hill Blue Note. I start with the out-the-gate four albums released in 1964? (weren't Wolff and Lion just as excited about Hill at the time?) Some dates grow on you, but others take some time, but I'm so glad to have them all. BTW, I like Andrew!!! Summary, at BN alone, wow! That BN allowed him to record so much music, and then we get Passing Ships as a gift? And then some? Priceless.
  12. I'm quoting myself. Right now, I don't really care, I'm buying this set; for God's sake (telling myself) it's effing Joe, McCoy, Grimes, & DeJohnette. Sold.
  13. So glad to have picked up the Sonny Rollins original albums RCA box set, and one of my favs (What's New, is right behind it) from his RCA period. Most interesting period in Sonny's career, in my opinion. We Three. Roy Haynes, Phineas Newborn, Paul Chambers. New Jazz. Earlier, Coleman Hawkins, Desafinado, Impulse!
  14. They made sense.
  15. So, listening to the bass that bad/unlistenable then? One end of the spectrum says yes, other says no??
  16. In the mode for Joe continues. In 'n' Out.
  17. Excited about this record set, that's what I needed to hear, sold!
  18. On the fence now. Is the bass/no bass that bad? Because I like bass, but none, nor too much can change my mind on this release. Love the cover BN chose though.
  19. "Our Thing" is spinning right now.
  20. Woah. Sleeve is sweet. Blues Walk-Lou Donaldson
  21. Sammich. When Lou was in the groove, it was total boogaloo. Keeps me entertained. RIP.
  22. That's nearly a century of playing drums from Charlie Parker to Andrew Hill and beyond. What a life!
  23. Founded Quest Records, whose roster included Sonny Simmons and New Order. Wow. RIP.

    Jackie McLean

Speaking of great runs, Joe Henderson's tenure at BN is an absolute treat. Think Dorham and Henderson had a great thing going on there.
