Anybody else from Switzerland, France or Germany considering on coming? Or even from overseas for a holiday?
  3. Great!!! He is interviewed here in The Guardian after learning the news: http://www.theguardian.com/music/2016/apr/18/henry-threadgill-wins-pulitzer-prize-music-jazz
  4. It's no coincidence then that I also like your avatar! (I also wish I could get more of C. Thornton's music).
  5. Learned about this at a Matana Roberts concert on saturday in Paris. She dedicated the concert/experiment to his memory, mentioning how he had been a big influence for her on the combinations of sound and images
  6. New live Von Schlippenbach in quartet with Rudi Mahall (bcl), Antonio Borhini (b), Heinrich Köbberling (d): A coproduction on Double Moon records: http://www.doublemoon.de/en/cddetails/intchr71316.shtml
  7. I don't know for all of them but the two I got mention the same producer for the reissues as an earlier series, Daniel Baumgarten. The Desmond mentions being mastered at La Source mastering by Jean-Pierre Chalbos, which is a 2000 remaster I think. Other characteristics are they added a "jazz connoisseur" label to this series. The Liner notes are transcriptions of the original LP ones followed by the facsimile of the same thing as it was originally on the back cover. The transcriptions are plenty of mistakes, seems they were scanned and not checked afterwards. Sound is very good on both, except for a very brief yet disturbing digital error at 03:31 on the first track of the Desmond, in the midst of the Jim Hall solo... I wonder if it is there on all the copies.
  8. New RCA Victor reissues, some of them (most?) have been reissued many times and no new mastering here it seems: Gil Evans plays the music of Jimi Hendrix Jeanne Lee, Ran Blake - The Newest Sound Around Martial Solal - At Newport '63 Phineas Newborn Jr- Fabulous Phineas Paul Desmond - Easy Living Gary Burton - The Genuine Tong Funeral Mack the Knife and Other Berlin Songs of Kurt Weill Lou Levy Trio - A Most Musical Fella George Russell - The Jazz Workshop Sonny Rollins - What's New I just picked up the Desmond and the Russell.
  9. Many thanks King Ubu! Also love the way you have of traveling and the side visits. Really hoping to hear some of those nights on record. Will be next week in Paris at: Tiger trio -- Nicole Mitchell, Joëlle Léandre and Myra Melford, for a concert that will be recorded for a future issue on Rogueart. Also more live Léandre next month with her Tentet...
  10. Also sent, thanks!
  11. Not UK but French member and air mail was always fine for me, it usually comes faster than announced and the rate is low. I will very probably be in for the Hawk set this time after getting Threadgill last fall (go for it by the way).
  12. I finally got hold of the Boulez recordings on Columbia box set. Have listened with great delight to some Bartok, Stravinsky, Ravel and Debussy which are truly remarkable. But this one, particularly "Amériques" played yesterday was a real discovery to me! It was too long ago that I had attempted on Varèse, but now and in this quality of interpretation!!!
  13. Really sad news, but what a full life as many have noted. What saddens me particularly is how he seems to go away in partial anonymity at least here in France. France Musique radio station (maybe the only good one left) changed its programs yesterday evening for Mr Bley though, here it is: http://www.francemusique.fr/emission/open-jazz/2015-2016/hommage-paul-bley-01-05-2016-18-00 I didn't realize Paul Bley's collaborations were that widespread - truly amazing. I return also to Open, to love, Mindset, and Sankt Gerold regularly.

  15. I agree with all the above. According to what you already enjoy in the european field, be sure to check albums with the likes of John Edwards, Steve Noble, Joëlle Léandre, Daunik Lazro (try for instance Hasparren on No Business records with the two previous), Agusti Fernandez, Barry Guy, Irene Schweizer, Peter Kowald... The Penguin Guide to Jazz recordings and the EFI Sheffield website are good references for this music (The Penguin Guide is good for up to 2005, and most of the historic albums mentionned above receive highest distinction there). The Ganelin Trio would be on my list of must haves. Albums Ancora da capo and the latest coproduction from Leo Records and a Chinese bookstore would be the best places to start for that fantastic trio.
  16. It was great to see them again as expected. The trio are recording for ECM this month. I also offered the concert to family members on the second night and they especially enjoyed Courtois' approach to the cello, really new for them. Sclavis excelled, one of his solos I enjoyed most was quite out there, and his tone is superb.
  17. Tonight: Louis Sclavis, Dominique Pifarély and Vincent Courtois. Already saw them in Lyon earlier this year and am really expecting to seeing them in this smaller concert venue.
  18. Thank you for your words of solidarity mjazzg. I really hope such atrocity will never become a common experience across the world.
  19. Ok also but very moved. I live in the area of the shootings and was outside in the street when it happened, did not go home that night and instead stayed at a friend's place near where I was. Lots of friends stuck in restaurants and hearing the shootings. Was out yesterday to go past the scenes of the killings and there was a panic movement, cops got very nervous and cleared the streets for a moment. It's a very sad moment. Yes Niels and medjuck, there were more accomplices, namely the car drivers. 7 were identified but then Isis mentionned 8 people in their communiqué. Two more of the dead killers were identified and lots of people interrogated consequently since last night in many french cities and Brussels.
  20. I am looking forward to hearing that interplay, thank you Steve!
  21. Will be seeing them in Paris (Pantin) next tuesday.
  22. Yes, I turned on the tuner at 8... Did you get to hear it on the net?
  23. I don't intend to interrupt the discussion here... Just to talk about another new release, the new Ganelin trio record in front of their first Chinese audience released on Leo Records is extremely enjoyable, and the sound is excellent. I understand Leo Feigin who believes it will become one of the best records in his catalogue.
  24. The one directed by Gil Evans from a different series is apparently very good
  25. From that period of SAJ, there is also the Umlaut box, "Stockholm connection" from this year.
